CANON LAW ON DESECRATION

This topic is dealt with in the Code of Canon Law and in the Ceremonial of Bishops. Canons 1211-1112 touch upon the violation of sacred places.

"Can. 1211 Sacred places are violated by gravely injurious actions done in them with scandal to the faithful, actions which, in the judgment of the local ordinary, are so grave and contrary to the holiness of the place that it is not permitted to carry on worship in them until the damage is repaired by a penitential rite according to the norm of the liturgical books.

"Can. 1212 Sacred places lose their dedication or blessing if they have been destroyed in large part, or have been turned over permanently to profane use by decree of the competent ordinary or in fact."

To this must be added the norms of the Ceremonial of Bishops, Nos. 1070-1092, which describes the public prayers to be made after the desecration of a church.

First, it specifies further the nature of the crimes that can desecrate a church as those that "do grave dishonor to sacred mysteries, especially to the Eucharistic species, and are committed to show contempt for the Church, or are crimes that are serious offenses against the dignity of the person and society."

It continues: "A church, therefore, is desecrated by actions that are gravely injurious in themselves and a cause of scandal to the faithful."

Reparation for the desecration is to be carried out with a penitential rite celebrated as soon as possible. Until that time, no sacred rite may be celebrated in the church. Preaching to prepare for the penitential rite may be carried out. The people are encouraged to avail themselves of the sacrament of reconciliation, which should be celebrated in another church. To symbolize penance, the Ceremonial recommends: "The altar of the church should be stripped bare and all customary signs of joy and gladness should be put away, for example, lights flowers, and other such articles."

It is fitting that the bishop presides at the rite of reparation, which may be either a celebration of the Eucharist or a Liturgy of the Word as circumstances suggest. It may be celebrated on any day except the Easter Triduum, Sundays and solemnities, but may be celebrated on the vigil of a Sunday. The Mass of reparation is the preferred mode.

The most suitable Mass formula may be chosen; for example: the votive Mass of the Holy Eucharist (in cases of profanation of the Blessed Sacrament) or for promoting harmony in the case of violent clashes.

There are several forms of carrying out the rite. One is a procession of the people from a nearby church or another suitable place during which prayer and the litany of the saints is sung, including the patron of the desecrated church and other prayers found in the Roman Ritual. If a procession is not possible, then the people gather in the church and the bishop and other ministers enter from the sacristy.

In the case of desecration of the Eucharist, the concluding rites of Mass are replaced by exposition, adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

If there is only a celebration of the Word, then everything is done as above, until after the homily. A prayer of intercession asking for God's mercy is carried out. The altar is then dressed and decorated by the ministers or the faithful. The bishop then approaches the altar, and kisses and incenses it. He subsequently introduces the Our Father, followed by a suitable closing prayer and the blessing.

When the Ceremonial of Bishops was published, the official rite of reparation was not yet promulgated. However, the elements provided in the Ceremonial and described above suffice for the preparation of an adequate celebration.

They were sent to you on Tuesday and your press officer said you did not receive them!
As a result they were resent.
Do you not want to know and see what Irish priests are sending out to lay people?
Are you wanting to shoot the messenger and ignore the message?
Diarmuid, get real. Face up to what is currently going on in the Irish Church - and indeed in you own diocese.
We are in melt down.

I can find no trace of any e-mail from you on Tuesday.
By the time you then “resent” the images, the matter was already in the public domain and the matter had been taken in hand by church and civil investigation.
I do not think it was necessary at that stage to send me such horrendous images.
I have no wish to hide anything as you know.

I was telling journalists that I sent you the worrying images allegedly sent by a priest.
They were telling me you were denying receiving them.
I have been open and trusting in providing you with worrying trends in the Irish Church.
As painful as it all is, if we do not see what is happening, How can we address it?
The pain of seeing these images is the pain of looking on the wounds of the Church.

The truth will set us free even if the truth is revolting.
Let the investigations now proceed.

Gardaí try to verify images of sex act on church altar

Gardai are attempting to verify images that appear to show a sex act being carried out in a provincial church.
This week photographs began to circulate showing a man in priest's vestments engaging in a sex act on the altar of the parish grounds.
A formal complaint has been made to officers at a district Garda station, who are now leading the investigation into the incident.
However, the alleged sex act occurred in a nearby town and not in the parish where investigating gardaí are based.
A Garda spokesman yesterday confirmed that an investigation was under way after gardaí received a report on May 2.
A source told the Irish Independent gardaí were now trying to verify the images of the alleged incident, and would have to establish what crime, if any, had taken place.

"There are a range of different offences that could have been committed here, but gardaí first have to establish if the images in question are authentic.
The investigation is still in the early stages, a lewd act may have been committed but that will become apparent at a later stage," the source said.
It is understood that a person connected to the church made the formal complaint.
A person who obtained the images, who wished to remain anonymous, described the incident as "an abomination".
They also questioned how many people had received communion at the altar of the parish church since its violation, or had been confirmed, buried or married.
The individual also called for "some sort of exorcism" of the church.
"The photographs depict something that appears to be somewhat satanic," they told the Irish Independent.
The graphic images show two men across what appears to be the altar of a small country church, and engaged in intimate poses. There is no suggestion that the intimate act is not consensual.
The diocese concerned declined to give an indication as to whether the church has been re-consecrated.
Profane
The Catholic Church teaches that sacrilege occurs when sacred objects are used for an unworthy purpose. This includes the profane use of sacred vestments. Church law also teaches that defiling a sacred place by sexual acts is sacrilege.
According to Church law: "A church is desecrated by actions that are gravely injurious in themselves and a cause of scandal to the faithful."
The concerning images will be investigated during a year when the Catholic Church in Ireland is facing challenges including the upcoming abortion referendum.
The papal visit in August is expected to be a celebration of the family, but there will also be a strong focus on his response to victims of clerical sex abuse scandals.
The Church has also been under scrutiny over its attitudes towards same-sex couples in the run-up to the World Meeting of Families later in the summer.

He's already aware of the issue and no one more than this man has done more to ensure the full and total implementation of policies around child protection. No one more than this Archbishop has ensured the highest standards of Child Protection Policies and responds swiftly to situations and personnel at the centre of abuses, real or alleged. Name calling, innuendo, vulgarity (Magna) and hate inciting comments are unacceptable. The Gardai are incestigating alleged incident as discussed here. Hopefully the truth will be sought and shared. 2. 9.23 DM seems to have credibility compared to other bishops simply because he is better able to posture in the eyes of the media than others. When it suits him, as in the past, he will turn other bishops out when the posturing demands it. Don't mistake this for real credibility. Look at how many bishops and priests have sold out pro life cause over many years - more posturing - and tragically they think it will bring themselves to a better place. How wrong they are.

    6. +Pat, as you'll know from your Canon Law studies in seminary (you've said before it was your favourite subject) the Catholic church is a federation, with each diocese being, in the lingo, a "local church". Effectively every bishop is a mini-Pope and Metropolitan archbishops have no power over them. Dairmuid or Eamon cannot tell William what to do and Francis has emasculated the CDF. So if Bishop Crean decides to ignore your email and do nothing, that's that. The nuncio has no judicial powers over him. The only thing that works is exposure on your blog and by the media.

  35. Some are worried about poor priests being offended. It does not matter how nice they are they revere a book that commands that gays be stoned to death without mercy and which says God commanded it. Id worry about that instead of some shag on an altar. The altar is not sacred in the first place except in people's superstitious imagination. It is a religion of deliberate lies. We are never told how Jesus condoned paedophilia when he banned wives from divorcing though many of them were children and remember the girls consent was never looked for when she was taken to the marriage ceremony. They claim to be the update of the religion that God gave Moses. Thus they have to take responsibility for what was done in the name of the Hebrew faith and that included obeying a God who wanted pagan altars smashed. How do you think Christianity got rid of paganism? By sacrilege. I would waste no pity on them and I hope it starts a trend.

Cloyne also has no fewer than 9 priests serving outside the diocese, in a mix of desk jobs and army chaplaincies, including the British Army, which is quite an achievement for the rebel county.

All this talk of bed-hopping is most distressing. It also accounts for Magna's absence today, because I took the opportunity yesterday to break it to him that his father was actually taken from us by a barmaid.
    He's prostrate upstairs.
Not least that he now knows that all the Magna Cartas around all spring from the same loins, as it were. They're all the real thing.
And I must say thank you to the Canon for his kind words yesterday, and I'm sorry it took so long to reply but obviously things are a bit fraught at the moment.

  45. Archbishop Martin, get real, and stop acting as though butter wouldn't melt in your mouth ! Stop sending you pornographic images ? I'm sure you have seen enough on the laptops and computers of many of your priests, who spend inordinate amounts of their time fulfilling their frustrated desires by abusing themselves while watching pornography. So, don't come on all offended when + Pat sends you stuff that is being done by your priests, as if you are shocked. You already know the horrendous dysfunction that is alive and kicking in your Church and in your priesthood. Sort that out first before getting all precious about + Pat letting you know what is going on.

The standing of you and your fellow bishops in Ireland, indeed of the Church is Ireland, is pathetically low. You guys have ruined the Church by your idiotic and lamentable management of matters, and the staggering lack of leadership. How dare you have any view on anything of importance anymore that will be taken seriously. You people are so discredited. You have only yourselves to blame. The sooner sensible lay people take over the leadership of the Church and sideline the likes of you, then the better. Perhaps we need to become a Church without bishops, or at least with bishops who are men, and women, who are sane, sensible and lead normal lives in families and proper relationships rather than the dysfunctional frustrated and discredited lives that you and the vast majority of your bishops and priests lead. And, you are certainly not holy either, so don't come on all offended and innocent.

When Pope Francis comes he should sack the lot of you and send you packing.

And if there are 'green shoots' around, they will, as usual, be choked to death by big, ugly, clericalist weeds.

  51. Magna in Luke’s gospel Jesus calls on his disciples to love their enemies and to do good to those who hate them. The scripture tells us that Jesus was very much realistic about the hostility that would come his own way and the way of his followers. In scripture we see that Jesus foretold of people like you who hate his Church and his followers, St Peter’s successors his Ordinary’s and all his Holy Clergy. But the Church also as in the scripture love thy enemy. You can be redeemed. The Church does not hate you even if you were not suitable for ordained ministry you are loved by God and his Holy Church. Amen +

    1. 20:18, your post was quite reasonable-sounding up to the point where you told a lie: 'you were not suitable for ordained ministry...' . You, and others here, wish.😆

As for Jesus, he made no mention of the institutional Roman Catholic Church, because it didn't exist at the time.

I'm much too polite to tell you what my younger brother, Minor Carta, would retort here. He has a foul tongue, and a temper to match. He would just tell you that you were talking out your ass about the Scripture and about me. Now I wouldn't say any such thing, but he would. 😆

    2. Magna - your a highly intelligent and well read man. I don’t doubt you would have had many gifts to bring to the priesthood had you went forward to receive Holy Orders. I know you have said previously, that you were, like many others unaware of the systemic abuse within the RCC.

But the problem is you seems to think that all those ordained are unfit and are not holy men. There are many men who failed us but in proportion they are a minority.

I think with your level of intellect you can be better than you are perceived on this blog.

I don’t want to say that I think you’ve been hurt because I don’t know you. I know from what I’ve read you have been failed by the church as have many people.

The Church has through the men ordained failed many people but I don’t believe the Church as an institution is a w***e and beyond redemption.

I know that even if you continue your fight against the Church that you are, deep down, a good man. As a Jesuit once said to me “God doesn’t make crap” - God makes us all in his image and likeness and however that might manifest its self.

I would also like to say I do not agree with the abuse leveled against you and those who do that need also to see what scripture is telling us.

      Enjoy the bank holiday weekend.
