EAMON DANCES WHILE MAGHERAFELT BURNS!!!

WHILE MAGHERAFELT PARISH IS IN TURMOIL AND ARMAGH DIOCESE IS IN MELTDOWN THE ARCHBISHOP - EAMON MARTIN - IS JIVING AWAY IN LOURDES.

EAMON IS FOND OF HATS

HERE HE IS WEARING A POINTY, PINKY ONE.
.

LETTER TO EAMON ABOUT MAGHERAFELT

22nd May 2018.

Archbishop Eamon Martin.
Armagh.

Dear Eamon,

Last night I attended a meeting in Magherafelt with concerned parishioners of the parish.

A range of issues was discussed, and I promised the group that I would write to you to highlight their concerns.

Sadly, most of the concerns involve Father John Gates and his treatment of the parishioners and parish groups.

1.   The first concern was of how Father Gates speaks to people – especially elderly people. He has shouted at and sent several older ladies home from church crying!

2.   When these ladies went home and told their families of the incidents some family members like sons, went to Father Gates house to complain. Father Gates spoke angrily to these people and on some occasions called the PSNI to take the complainants away!

3.   Father Gates has the habit of sending for the PSNI for people he conflicts with – a habit that the PSNI have expressed concerns about.

4.   Father Gates shouts at people regularly over the issue of parking on church property in places he does not approve of. The only person in the parish who seems to be allowed to park anywhere is his bingo caller colleague named “McEniff”.

5.   Father Gates has reduced people to tears by refusing to sign Mass cards when he is approached to do so in the sacristy – even at times of death.

6.   As you know he recently refused Conree Muldoon his First Holy Communion – causing widespread scandal in the parish. In the end Conree got his Holy Communion.

7.   Father Gates openly has “favourites” in the parish causing widespread tension.

8.   Parishioners claim that Father Gates has bullied Monsignor O’Byrne, Father Brannigan and other clergy.

9.   Father Gates has sacked the original groundsman and appointed his own person.

10.               Parishioners have heard that Father Gates had to reach a settlement with a man he had accused of assaulting him?

11.               Parishioners have heard that Father Gates has rowed with an undertaker.

SCHOOLS:

Father Gates has presided over situations of bullying of staff in the parish schools.

1.   One lady became very ill over bullying and even though she attempted to have her problems resolved never got a resolution.

2.   Another lady also became very ill and is seeking a resolution presently.

3.   One lady took Father Gates to the Labour Relations Agency where Father Gates was told he could not discipline her; was told that his school’s human resources training and processes were inadequate; and he was reprimanded by the Agency for accessing a confidential safeguarding report.

THE IRISH SCHOOL:

The local Irish School in Magherafelt has had major problems with Father Gates from its beginning.

1.   Father Gates, although an Irish speaker, has refused to celebrate First Holy Communion in Irish for the children of the school. As a result, the children and parents have had to go from parish to parish looking the Sacrament for their children.

2.   Currently they receive First Holy Communion in Cookstown parish.

3.   Father Gates cancelled a fundraising event for the Irish School in the parish centre at the last minute in spite of the fact that the event had been planned for months.

4.   When parents telephone Father Gates about the school he hangs up the telephone abruptly on them!
5.   Father Gates has accused the school parents of lies!

We now have a situation in Magherafelt where everyone, Catholic and Protestant alike are talking daily about the state of the parish.

Father Gates has been missing for some time and there is talk about him returning to the parish on June 10th.

People are aware that you are coming for Confirmations on June 3rd.

Surprisingly, many people. Especially the people in the Irish School, have told me that they have written to you about these matters and you have not even acknowledged their letters!

There are 130 pupils in the Irish School – with 260 parents.

That is 400 parishioners and members of the diocese that are not being treated with respect!

I am now appealing to you to resolve the matter by:

1.   Appointing a new, kind and dynamic PP to Magherafelt who will:

A.  Bring the healing of all the hurt that has been done.

B.  Go into the parish to sort out all the bullying that is taking place – especially within the schools.

Eamon, in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, I beseech you to exercise your role as Pastor and Father Bishop and restore peace, unity, and love to the great Parish of Magherafelt – with all its loyal and faithful parishioners.

Sincerely yours,

Pat

(Bishop) Pat Buckley

  1. Why do Bishops like E Martin not get a good PR agency that will advise them how to deal with people properly? Ignoring people with genuine concerns, ignoring their emails and letters is not the answer or way forward. If E Martin or any Bishop where enployed in the business world and treated people like this they wouldn't last 5 minutes. To think they are Christian men of God behaving in this way leaves no one surprised why the Church is in the state it is in.

  2. Bishop Pat our group have been meeting to discuss our protest planned for 3rd June in Magherafelt. At a recent meeting we decided to take our protests inside the Church because the Archbishop refused to meet with us. After reflection at our last meeting over the weekend we have decided if Fr. Gates is present the peaceful protest will go ahead during the Confirmation. If Fr. Gates is not present then we will simply hand the Archbishop a letter personally to him before or after the Ceremony without any disruption. Feelings are running high and it's a great pity the Archbishop refuses to engage with us.

    1. The person or group saying they will protest at the Confirmation has no connection with me or the people I met with on Monday evening.

In fact the proposed protest was discussed at the meeting and all agreed that such a protest would be wrong as it would destroy a happy day for children and parents.

The person or people talking about the protest inside the Church do not represent the people I am in contact with.

  6. Actually the "Majority" of Magherafelt parish don't want Fr.Gates back. The work that was done in the parish didn't come out of Fr.gates pocket. It was the parishioners pockets. You must have a very, very short memory of the damage Fr.Gates has done to members of this parish who attended this church for years. The hurt an pain he has caused to the elderly above all even the child who was for his First Holy Communion. And of course we are all human and if Fr.Gates can't understand the meaning of human well what do you think the people are up in arms about demanding for him to be removed from this parish. The sooner the better. That would be the best an peaceful reward this parish needs. But then again he has the neck to come back as if nothing has happened. He,s the type of person who thinks he can tramp people into the ground. God help the children on Confirmation day look what Fr.Gates has caused,we maybe willhave the Sunday world or other media on this day. We hope Bishop Eamon Martin will be coming an letting us all know we will be having a new Parish Priest if not before then.

    2. Pat’s about the only one who’s up front and transparent with his fees.

There’s a whole industry of “donations” to get married. Usually a donation is given to get married. Which is fair enough. There’s a murkier side to it tho.

There’s religious order retired priests taking fees of over £1,000 euros per wedding to sneak a wee poem into the wedding or have a piece of popular music played. It’s all on here: https://www.weddingsonline.ie/discussion/how-much-do-i-pay-priest-t391986.html

Pat is both reasonable and upfront about costs. Not the case all round!

    3. @12.09
Do you expect Pat to eat air and drink rain? The man is entitled to a wage for work done.

      Delete
    4. 12.51: Your fee Pat is more than any priest receives, absolutely. What about funerals, baptisms, mass offerings? Don't lie. And, once before, you said that to date, as an independent Bishop you have officiated at close to 4000 weddings. Now, if that's true, that's a lot of MONEY...A conservative estimate, allowing for different fees over the years....close to 800,000 pounds!! A LOT OF MONEY. A HUGE LOT OF INCOME...WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO BE INDEPENDENT?

      Delete
    5. Some couples spend upwards of £20k on a wedding (pure madness), so £300 is a footnote in the accounts.

      Delete
    6. @19.24
Let us assume you have accurate figures... £800,000 in today's money sounds a lot, but that is £25,000/year since 1986 when Pat became independent. Relatively speaking that is 7% above the average salary in N.Ireland, however rom that Pat runs his oratory which would bring Pat's wage below the Nation average Salary. Perhaps you should turn your attention to the salaries of Down and Conor priests for I heard one boast that they were the best paid in All Ireland.

    9. 21.29: I have no difficulty with Pat earning a salary and he's entitled to it but he shouldn't pretend he's a pauper, nor should he encourage begrudgery against the many hard working clerics I know. Let Pat tell us the full story if he so wishes.

  14. What a sad state of affairs…the catholic church continually emphasises the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation but unfortunately this is not evident in the crusade directed by Pat Buckley. We are human and therefore all make mistakes. Pat Buckley is unhealthily obsessed with dividing the parish of Magherafelt, not only in terms of Father Gates, but in relation to any scandal that belittles the Church. After all the nasty comments that have been published through multiple blogs, it is no surprise that Father Gates is taking his time to return. Bitterness has escalated to the point that Father Gates is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Isn’t it ironic that Father Gates is being labelled a bully when the Pat Buckley brigade are illustrating typical bullying behaviour by slandering his name tirelessly and doing everything in their power to excommunicate him. Shame on you all for ganging up on Father Gates rather than discussing your issues with him privately AND in a rational and dignified manner. If this was the way people conducted themselves, Father Gates wouldn’t have to rely on the PSNI to remove verbal harassment. Venting publically and involving the media are not signs of Christianity Pat and if Magherafelt Confirmation is disrupted by protesters or the media then you have succeeded with your vicious goal. Father Gates may have a stricter approach than others in how he carries out his duties but people need to realise and accept that we all have different personality types. In work we deal with different types of people that we may not be fond of but the very least we can do is show respect and be diplomatic. This is the start of the end of the Catholic Church because no priest will survive under this scrutiny and with clergy applicants dwindling as it is, this will further exasperate the problem. If you are true Christians, practise what you preach, welcome Father Gates back and resolve to rebuild a health relationship with your parish priest. I wish to reiterate the point that we are ALL sinners and deserve a second chance. O Sacred Heart Of Jesus I Place All My Trust In You…that you will heal these bitter so called parishioners.

    2. Quoting @12:45 "This is the start of the end of the Catholic Church because no priest will survive under this scrutiny and with clergy applicants dwindling as it is, this will further exasperate the problem."

The fact that priests are finally coming under scrutiny and that parishioners are trying to hold them accountable can only be a good thing. For too long diocesan priests have been, arrogantly and hypocritically, preaching ‘the church is the people of god’ while behaving like dictators. EM etc. don’t want to engage in dialogue, at any level, because they persist in their arrogant belief that they are unassailable.

Who was it who said ‘Every day people are leaving the church and going back to god?’ Lenny Bruce, I think. ‘Amen’ to that I say.

And to the original poster of that message – the word you are looking for is exacerbate – not EXASPERATE the problem.

      Delete
    3. 12.45 Agreed. However the way the dioceses and parishes are currently structured the RCC has an inbuilt mechanism for defusing situations such as these - a transfer at the next batch of clerical appointments. A tried and tested modus operandi.

      Delete
    4. Indeed, don't deal with the problem, just transfer it.

      Delete
    5. The structure includes a bunch of yes people incapable of independent thought and unlikely to challenge the status quo. Change is coming.

    6. @16:32 Transferral is a legitimate way of dealing with a problem such as the one which has emerged here. It gives all involved a new start and the opportunity to learn from past mistakes - to make new friends without losing the oldones.

      Delete
    7. @20.33 Losing the old ones would surely be a prerequisite of learning from past mistakes. The old ones would include those individuals who sat back and ignored and condoned the actions of the individual concerned.

    4. It must be awfully tense having two massive egos, G&B, in the one house, both seeking to people please. I bet all the funerals in Crossgar and the rest of co. Down are concelebrated by both of them. They didn't get on the Graan. G is entering his prime, whereas B is on the wane. It's like a young lion trying to usurp the former leader of the pride.

    5. Brian got his nose pushed out of joint and his massive ego bruised by the PP of Castleblaney over Big Toms Funeral. No taking over here Brian and running the show because you might get away with taking over in Fermanagh but this is Co Monaghan. He’s never had many stand up to him before but I’d buy that PP in Castleblaney a drink and shake his hand. Send Darcy to Magherafelt, he derseves the people there and they deserve him. Plenty of big shot weddings and funerals for him to do in the town, money has always spoken in a place like Magherafelt. The priests have always been too well looked after there

    6. The Passionist monastery in Crossgar and the parish of Crossgar are totally separate entities. The monastery priests have absolutely nothing to do with the parish. They don’t say Mass, do funerals, etc. in the parish of Crossgar (Kilmore).

    7. The Graan wasn't a parish but it didn't stop Brian going to every bigshot funeral in Fermanagh, turning up unannouced and univited and putting on a big show of being the most compassionate person in the church. Once he gets to know people in Crossgar he'll be at the same craic there. Mercifully, his successor in the Graan is not keeping up that nonsense.

      Delete
    8. Darcy’s successor at the Graan is doing a fine job and the interesting thing is that Brian’s name never gets mentioned there now. It’s true he only turned up to the big shot weddings and funerals but some priests allowed him to swan in and take over. You couldn’t even get a word in edge ways when Brian was in the middle of a conversation, it’s as if you weren’t present. I can’t understand people with egos the size of their head who dominate conversations and hijack them because of me me me.

  51. We all have an opinion about Pat. Let me say that, although I don't always agree with his style of communication, we need to give this man huge credit for being one of the most courageous supporters of the powerless. In his history he has shown , to my mind at least, a distinct lack of "agree-ability". In normal life, this is usually a bad thing. In the public world Pat lives in, this means he is one of the few who challenge abuse of power and he unfailingly sides with the powerless. He has demonstrated this again and again, and I am glad to have people like him in this world.

In the mid 1950s he had me on strikes and picket lines as workers struggled for their rights.

From the age of 3/4 I learned about the struggles of the "under dog".

I have never forgotten these lessons.

  65. Hi Bishop Pat. As a resident of the Lancaster Diocese I was astonished to see
their press release on their website and social media pages about The Bishop’s Secretary resigning after 13 years. The article detailing all of his achievements was twice the size of the departing Bishop Campbell. Hoping we will now see a Bishop leading us. The new chap sounds good. No harm to Rev Billing but he only spent 5 mins working in a Parish and he was left to run the Diocese. Just lacked experience and upset lots of people unnecessarily. I believe he is off to Canada to study Canon law. He’d be better working in a Parish where he is needed! More lay people’s money wasted.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Pat, do you know this Cecily and is he from these parts?

    ReplyDelete
  67. They should train and employ lay canon lawyers and not have parish-dodging priests doing that or being the diocesan secretary for 13 years, as in this case. Fr Billing will be hitting 50 before he goes to a parish. Is he about to have the summer off before going to Canada?
