PRIEST PSYCHOLOGIST REFLECTS ON SEXUAL SACRILEGE IN CLOYNE / KILDORRERY

A PRIEST PSYCHOLOGIST REFLECTS ON RECENT HAPPENINGS IN CLOYNE DIOCESE AND THE PARISH OF KILDORRERY.

"By any standards, the images published recently on your blog are shocking in the extreme. I can well understand how many, clerical and laity, will be disturbed to the core of their being with incontrovertible evidence of depravity carried out in a sacred place by a priest and (possibly) a student for the priesthood. These men have photographed themselves f*cking on the altar of the sanctuary of a church. What could be more depraved? Indeed many of your commentators have allied this to satanic behaviour, more usually at a "Black Mass" or other such satanistic ritual. Have we reached a new low?

Such behaviour, while uncommon, is not unknown to psychologists. It is quite often the case that men and women, deeply disturbed in their psychosis, can "act out" in ways that try to gain control over what it is that is causing their distress and pain. This is often the case with adults who have been the victims of abuse, either sexual, mental or physical, in their childhood and all the more so when this has been carried out by parents or close relatives. I have heard of such adults going to the grave of the perpetrator and urinating or defecating upon the grave as if this in some way will release the pain and help them to gain back some control over the forces that have been causing the distress and the pain. I have also heard of cases, less often to be sure, where a sexual act is carried out over or nearby the gravesite. These too are ways of gaining control. I wonder might this help in trying to fathom out what has been happening in this parish church in Cloyne diocese, and no doubt in other churches in Ireland and throughout the world?

The Priest

The priest in question is certainly in need of intensive help and therapy, as by any standard he is presenting in a way that is extremely disturbed and putting himself at great risk, and others too. When I saw the photographs I thought to myself that this priest is not only f*cking ON THE altar, he is actually f*cking THE altar and all it represents in his life and in the lives of Catholics. So we move away from someone who is so addled with addiction, be it drugs, sex, alcohol (though he may well have all there) to someone who is so angry with the Church, and all that the Church represents, that he literally wants to f*ck it;  out of his mind, his life and the lives of those he has charge of.

Whatever the cause of his behaviour, he needs help and not just a few chats with a therapist. This man needs deep and intensive psychotherapy to address the underlying issues and pain that would cause him to behave in such a way. I would imagine that he has had treatment before, as I feel sure that his behavioural problems have brought him to the attention of his bishops in the past. They have probably applied the "sticking plaster" solution of getting him "dried out" and returned to ministry as soon as possible. This cannot be an option in this case. He needs to be removed from ministry, perhaps permanently, so as not only not to harm others but equally importantly, harm himself. The great sadness of all of this is that he is harming and destroying himself by these behaviours.

The "Seminarian"

There has been some comment as to the identity of the recipient of the sexual acts on the altar. Some have suggested that he is a student for the priesthood. If this is the case then this is very worrying indeed. Perhaps even more so than for the priest who is the perpetrator. This seems to be a much younger man, and whatever the explanation for how he has found himself in this position (he could have been out of his mind on drugs or alcohol) he really does have issues that need dealing with. If he is a student for the priesthood, in "formation", then this is a real concern. Most of us, when we are younger, are idealistic and innocent - that is the developmental stage associated with young adulthood. Cynicism, or wariness, comes later as we grow older and realize that people can do bad things to us and to others. For someone to behave in such a way as a teenager or young person, on an altar, in a church, when he is training to be a priest is almost incomprehensible. Goodness knows what pain and suffering such a person would inflict on others, and on himself, should he be allowed to continue with his studies for the priesthood and be ordained. He too must be intervened upon and removed from the seminary, if indeed he is a seminarian.

The Bishop

There has been a lot of negative comment about the bishop of the diocese in which this behaviour has taken place. To some degree, I feel some sympathy for him, as I am sure that he is shocked and appalled as to what he has seen as anyone else is. He is also at the distinct disadvantage that he is called upon to act and to act quickly. He has probably no idea whatsoever what to do. I would imagine like most bishops I have met he is of average intelligence but totally ill-equipped to deal with psychosis, and especially when it involves one of his priests. I feel sure that he will wish to protect the identity of the priest, and so he should, as this man is one of his charges and has the right to his privacy if he is engaged in medical or psychological treatment. But he must ensure that the priest is intervened upon, removed from ministry (perhaps permanently) and undergoes intensive residential psychological screening and treatment. Not to do so would be to put the people of the diocese at grave risk of further abuse, even if only on the level of damage to the Church and its reputation, in the lives of these good men and women who attend church and who believe in it and in the probity of its ministers.

Conclusions

I offer these reflections to assist the debate, and in no way to minimise or to seek to excuse what by any stretch of the imagination is the reaching of a new low in the long and sordid history of the abuse perpetrated by some in the Church (be they bishops, priests, monks or nuns) upon the people they have been called to serve in Ireland and further afield. Perhaps it is as if that now we are in the "end times" of the Church in Ireland as an Institution, that such things are coming to the fore, and much more will come out also. Almost like a disease in the body bursting out on to the surface of the body. Generations upon generations of abuse of power, (and remember this is the heart of sexual abuse - the inflicting of power over others), are now coming out on the "body of the Church". Priests and nuns, even though they have been participants in this, have also been "victims", and this is displayed in the abhorrent behaviours we have recently been made all too graphically aware off.

  1. Any body who is decent would vomit at the stuff commanded by God in the Bible. Stoning innocent gay men to death. If a man mated with an animal the animal was stoned to death as well. Is our priest in the incident acting "in ways that try to gain control over what it is that is causing their distress and pain. This is often the case with adults who have been the victims of abuse, either sexual, mental or physical, in their childhood and all the more so when this has been carried out by parents or close relatives. Is he trying to degrade Jesus who after all did take responsibility for the evils of the New Testament and who went as far as to say he had come to fulful its evil law?

    1. God did not command such things as stoning to death gay men, or anyone (or anything) else; men did, based on cultural perceptions of what was persobally and socially acceptable.

  2. Pat, the priest psychologist should have signed his name so that we can trust his qualification. I find his insights too conclusive since we do not know yet the exact identity of the two men concerned. Or do we? This weekend in Dublin there was outrage at the hundreds of men who used public spaces to urinate etc..in front of families and visitors There is a depravity around that's breaching decency rules and the vile act perpetrated in this Church is an evil act. When will the truth be available?

    1. 00:11, I should have thought that, in Dublin as in any other European city, hundreds of men could be found relieving themselves unself-consciously on any weekend following a good booze-up.

  4. This is supposed to be by a psychologist? What professional language he uses! I have never seen a psychological report which uses the word f*cling! I think we can reasonably expect a clinical psychologist to understand the jargon word psychosis and to refrain from randomly throwing it around where there is no indication or suggestion that the person is suffering from a psychotic episode.
I would ask for this purported psychologist's name, but I just know he wants to remain anonymous because he is a priest. If this is written by someone who is attempting to work clinically with clergy or others G*d help them because this is Maynooth level 'psychology'.

  6. That is an interesting viewpoint from a psychologist who knows the theory in general. He speaks from a general perspective as he doesn't know this person in particular and what his motivations were. It was very important that the psychologist recognised that such disturbed individuals should be removed from the ministry before they wreak further havoc and damage on other innocent victims.... The local parishioners and indeed the wider Church are their victims because they are responsible for damage and desecration to their property, but far more importantly, they are responsible for damage to people's trust and confidence in the space where they should feel secure and welcome. Of course they are also responsible for further damage to the reputation of the Church but I place greater importance on the hurt and anger experienced by the parishioners and on the scandal given to the local children and young impressionable people who have witnessed this happen to their building and who must find it bewildering and inexplicable. To excuse their behaviour is to negate all of that and to add insult to injury.
That must not be allowed to happen. These are seriously disturbed individuals who are still at loose in the community . That cannot go unchallenged . The bishop has a duty of care to all concerned. He must therefore grasp the reins of responsibility and act without further delay to get professional help and guidance and do what absolutely must be done.

  7. An imaginative blog. And I don't believe one, hyperbolic, near-hysterical word of it .

Therapy? My freakin' eye! That priest and seminarian are fetishists: turned on by something so taboo (sex on a church altar), it aroused them both to orgasm in a way they probably didn't experience before. These guys are well practiced in kinky (very kinky) sex, and need greater and more extreme circumstances to get their kicks. They are, quite simply, a pair of very, very dirty bastardos.

Need I state the bleedin' obvious here? Neither of these horny hedonists prays at all.

As for either having faith in God? Phhh! 😅

Psychological therapy won't substitute for a lack of prayer and faith. Therapy won't 'cure' this behaviour, because there is damn all to cure: neither is psychologically ill. But they each ARE in very grave sin and need the grace of repentance.

It seems typical of one priest to make psychological excuses for the sins of another priest: poor Father; it really isn't his fault, because he is ill and can't help himself. Reminds me of the Protestant congregant who uninvitedly and inappropriately touched a young woman from his church as he was giving her a lift home. Guess what excuse he came up with? The devil MADE him do it, so it really wasn't his fault.

The priest-psychologist guest-blogging today offers just a slightly more sophisticated version of 'the devil made me do it' type of excuse for shockingly immoral behaviour.

I am going to suggest one more thing: those guys in the pics are probably enjoying the stir they've created and are getting off on it. Doubtless they are laughing their socks off at the incisive psychological analysis of their behaviour, especially since it more or less morally exonerates them.

Magna, there is much sense in what you say.
I wasn't going to be bothered commenting on the "priest psychologist's" analysis. Obviously, from his terminology, he has some knowledge of psychology, but I thought he was simply dressing up consciously perverted behaviour by considering it only in terms of the need for potential therapeutic intervention: almost a failure to recognise that evilly inclined people do exist.
Your comments, in my view, carry weight in acknowledging the reality.

  8. I have read the assessment by this priest psychologist a few times. I wish he had put his name to this article outlining his professional qualifications. I have read many psychological assessments on certain behavioural patterns and I am familiar with much psychological language and insight, sufficient to allow me to have written almost the same essay. I am not convinced of the authenticity of the author and his accreditations. Of all the assessments of psychologists I have read on various destructive behavioural acts, as in the vile act carried out in Kildorrery Church, the usage of the f**k/f*****g words makes me suspicious about the professional qualification of the author. I could have written the exact assesdment without the "f"words, which detract from the intellectual integrity of the assessment. Also, if this priest is a professionally trained therapist/counsellor, I doubt he would approve of the ridiculing, cartoon figures accompanying his article. From the various assessment articles I have studied, this article does not fit into the "professionally" trained therapist/psychologist genre. Quite honestly, anyone with a modicum of intelligence could have written this piece of analysis. I'm not convinced that this is a qualified priest psychologist, though there are understandable insights. Name of author and qualifications - please.

By your reference to him as a diocesan priest I rather suspect he is simply a cleric whose studies included psychology in the broadest sense. Many other professional disciplines study psychology also but in practice don't regard practitioners primarily as psychologists like your priest.

  37. I think the use of the F word undermines this article. It could have said engaged in sexual activity etc etc. the press did not use the F word in their articles. To say this is a secular priest is scary. Does he use this foul language regularly?

  38. Ten years ago I fell into conversation at a bar in an overseas hub airport with a guy from Dublin. As we got chatting other Irish joined, strangers, but from Dublin all of whom were travelling to visit their girlfriends in Thailand. We’re an international people.
At the height of the credit boom, an Irish banker told me he wanted to lend Irish savings on the collateral of anticipated future earnings of a string of race horses. We’re a financially astute people.
The Donegal Gaeltacht has in recent years succeeded in attracting children from as far afield as Nepal. We disseminate the benefits of the Irish language.
The Irish understand morality as we’ve been schooled in it since birth. Which is why the depravity that Bishop Pat highlights has shocked us all to the core.

    1. Those whose scurrilous activities are described in this blog reflect the attitudes and behaviour of the society in which they grew up. Their moral laxity, their hypocrisy, is the same as in other Irish in other walks of life. To eradicate depravity in the Irish Church it must first be eradicated in Irish society. But is that what we want? Or do people prefer to wallow in filth, and express feigned shock and indignation for the very things that feed their own addictions?

  46. Never EVER trust a self-declared celibate chaplain.

When will Roman Catholics learn? The honest answer is... NEVER!!!!! Because they are taught to have implicit trust in clerics...whore priests.

  47. Think about what divulging that feeling might mean to your relationship. It implies that you do not trust him; what if you’re wrong? How will he feel? How will you feel? You need to keep this in mind for every step that follows 4, below.Figure out your next steps if step 5 ‘fails’ (you feel as though you did not get a truthful answer, or for some other reason).Ask. Not on the way to work, or in the bathroom as you’re blow-drying your hair; find a good time when you are able to both talk openly, and ask him.Tell him why you are asking, and how you feel.If you feel you need to dig further do so. Remember, you are damaging a trusting relationship every time you decide to take it any further, but it is entirely up to you.** e n r i q u e h a c k d e m o n1 1 (at) G M A I L d o t C O M** can help you find out easily. he will some all your problems related to spying and getting information hack anything.Text +1 6 2 8 2 0 3 7 3 4 5 .

It's almost crazy to think that permanently killing erectile dysfunction can be done using simple, all-natural treatment options.

    But it is!

No humiliating pumps. No expensive pills. No dangerous injections. And no disgusting food combinations, thankfully...

Let me tell you, I wasted a LOT of time and money on ways to fight ED that not only didn't work...

...but also left me feeling like less of a man in the end.
