SUICIDE OF SEMINARIAN'S RELATIVE

"Hi Bishop Pat

I asked earlier on the blog if I could tell you about my close relative who was let down badly by two priests and a nun.

Put briefly my close relative had serious mental health problems and was diagnosed with personality disorder. She took her own life after several attempts at the age of 24. She was receiving separate and contradictory counseling from Sr Xxx Xxxxx, ex-priest Xx Xxxxxxx Xxxxx, and religious order priest Xx Xxxxx Xxxxx

They all strung her along when she should have had qualified medical care. The night before she killed herself she went out to Xxxxxxx Monastery and told Fr Xxx of her intention to do so. It wasn't in confession. He didn't alert her parents, doctor or 999 as the Samaritans, doctors and trained counselors do. She died in the early hours of the next day, about five hours after meeting him. As far as we know he was the last person she spoke to.

My mother found out all this after the death. He refused to give any more details except saying she told him she was going to commit suicide and it was not during confession.

Thanks for letting me say this. Privately I add that my devout mother never forgave Fr Xxx who was off-hand and defensive. Her health declined and she died six months later, followed by my father a year later. I was in I Divine in Maynooth and Niall Ahern threw me out within two weeks of my father's death, saying I was psychologically immature".

Dear Xxxxxx,

I am so sorry to hear of the death of your relative and of how it affected your poor mother, dad, (RIP) and family.

I am also so sorry that Maynooth was so cruel to you at such a vulnerable time in your life.

I have heard similar stories before of bishops, priests and seminaries being cruel to people at a sad time in their lives.

Any person who is cruel to anyone at such a time is certainly no friend of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

COUNSELING:

I think that we priests and nuns should be very, very careful when we are advising and counseling people with mental illnesses.

Most of us are not trained psychologists or therapists and we must be keenly aware of our limitations.

People with mental illnesses absolutely need the professional help of psychiatrists, therapists, and psychiatric nurses.

The very best thing we can do in such cases is to IMMEDIATELY involve the professionals.

On several occasions, even in recent months, I have had clearly ill people arrive at my door in great mental distress.

I bring them in, listen to them, make them a tea or coffee and get their permission to ring an ambulance.

If I did anything else I would regard myself as totally irresponsible and be acting outside my competence.

Trendy priests and nuns who have attended a few counseling courses in the USA can be dangerous.

We have seen the fruits of Dr. Prior and Dr. Collins in Maynooth!!!

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I hope that being able to tell your story on here, albeit anonymously, will have helped you with the burden you are carrying?

MAYNOOTH - WHAT IS DERMO AT?

ONE YEAR YOU ARE TAKING ALL YOUR SEMINARIANS OUT OF MAYNOOTH BECAUSE OF "STRANGE GOINGS ON" AND THE NEXT YEAR YOU BACK IN MAYNOOTH ORDAINING DEACONS FORMED IN THE PLACE!

Diarmuid, in taking his seminarians out of Maynooth was clearly signalling that he had no confidence in Maynooth Formation or Maynooth Formation staff.

And then on Saturday, at the request of the unsuitable formation, he goes back to Maynooth to ordain deacons that have been found worthy of ordination by the incompetent staff!

ORDER OF SERVICE FROM SATURDAY - COURTESY OF SEMINARIAN

Why would a bishop, who had come to the conclusion that Maynooth formation was seriously dysfunctional go and ordain men produced by that dysfunctional system?

People often say that Diarmuid runs with the hares and the hounds.

Are these diaconate ordinations a clear example of Diramuid's hunting tactics?

Are we dealing with a scheming politician here?

And why is Fanny Mullaney inviting a prelate to celebrate Maynooth ordinations when the very same prelate has signalled that Mullaney & Co are, at least dysfunctional, if not downright unsuitable formators?

Maybe Fanny has not given up all hope of eventually wearing a mitre and therefore needs to keep Dermo sweet?

ALSO - THERE WERE JUST TWO DEACONS ORDAINED IN MAYNOOTH THIS YEAR FOR THE 26 IRISH DIOCESES.

THE OTHER TWO WERE DIVINE WORD MISSIONARIES!

  1. If Dermo was acting in good faith he would not be able to ordain these men. Sadly, like many bishops, he cannot resist the urge to ordain when given the opportunity. Ordaining men is like a drug for bishops, with some liking the opportunity to ordain on each calendar year. I guess this was Dermo's 2018 opportunity

    1. Really! I thought the urge for performing ordinations/consecrations was only an Old Catholic phenomenon.

It was told of an OC bishop near Oxford that men were afraid to shake hands lest he grab them and ordain them.

  3. The story of any person's suicide is always a tragedy and sometimes the circumstances are multifaceted. Often we look for answers but find none. Then we begin to look for indicators and we try to piece together our conclusions. In this we may blame certain people and become angry. It's rarely one particular thing that may bring a person to the moment of ending their lives. Sadly, there are many self made counsellors at every street corner ready to take advantage of people's vulnerability. I had the experience myself of being manipulated into many unnecessary sessions by a counsellor but I discarded him quickly, not before challenging his peculiar techniques. I eventually found a wonderful counsellor. When anyone comes to me seeking professional advice beyond my competency I have a list of recognised and professional counsellors/therapists. It would be wrong to use this story as given to have a go at the Church on the basis that a priest or religious may have been somewhat careless in responding professionally. There are many quacks, self trained, who play recklessly with people's minds. Even the responses and reactions given here to some issues can be dangerous and careless, more judgment than understanding and mercy. I never see the fun in tearing people apart to ridicule, denigrate or humiliate them To me that's a horrible abuse. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing - how very true Pat! It' a pity you don't follow the wisdom of these words!

  5. Dealing with sensative areas can be dangerous. Confession can be a place of healing but also great hurt. On a simple note my mother as a young girl was refused absolution for eating a sausage on a Friday. She went to another priest who sorted it. Can't remember if she went to confession again. How priests apprroach confession and "counseling" type encounters says allot about who they are as persons...do no harm

  6. It is because Maynooth is in the archdiocese of Dublin and he insists on doing any ordinations within the diocese, even the religious orders, unless he is out of the country.

  10. Are Dublin's seminarian(s) back in Maynooth? It's a poor show if a bishop lacks confidence in a seminary located within his diocese and of which he is a trustee. Though I never understood why Dublin had its own seminary, Clonliffe, when Maynooth was in the archdiocese.

  18. Dear Pat. The ex-seminarian with the chip on his shoulder about being thrown out of maynooth may indeed have been psychologically immature when he was asked to leave. However I can't comment as I do not have the full facts. I believe however that he is currently delusional, and may have been so for many years. He states that the Samaritans would contact the police. This is a lie, and fake news as as such called into question his entire belief structure. Please reach out to him and try and help him as he has been living with a delusion for a along long time.
    .................RE:
do the samaritans call the police if you are suicidal?
if someone were to phone the samaritans and tell them they were about to jump off a cliff would they phone the police and trace the number?

No never - totally confidential. They don't even know your phone number the computer scrambles it so they can't call you unless you give them a number - if you run out of credit for example. Even if you tell them the cliff they won't do anything it's part of their core belief that everyone has a right to make their own choices but if they want some form of human touch as they go they will provide that for you. Of course they will ask if you are sure, being dead for ever isn't what you may need, escape from pain is maybe what you need. They will ask why you are doing this, talk about the problem.

Don't believe me if you want.

The Bishop of Xxx presided in choir at my xx funeral because I was a seminarian but he didn't attend the funerals of my parents.

I'm ignoring the comment about being immature. After my experiences I doubt it.

Nial Ahern used to put on a record of "Bring Flowers of the Fairest" at seminary gatherings and burst into tears and talk about his "Mammy". He was the Middle Dean. Was that mature?

  31. two questions to the person who are writing about at the start. 1. How do you know what was said to the preist/nun who you claim did nothing about what the friend did. 2. As you seem to know what was said and not done, what did you do to help that friend, as it must be reported to you between what was happened with the Preist/Nun and your friend taking their life.

Could we have a story here that Pat has made up to knock the Catholic Church and the Priest/Nuns that serve it, the majority of whom do an excellent job, but Pat seems to take pride in putting bad eggs as well as good eggs in the one basket and blasting both good and bad.

If the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in Ireland are serious about conducting a semainary then they need to surrender control to people who actually know what they are doing.

    Suggestions;
1- Spirtual and Academic formation- The Sulpicians
2- Pastoral. Psychological. Sexual. Formation and Development- The Servants of the Paraclete.

Clearly matters cannot continue in the current format.

I suspect Archbiship Martin of Dublin loeathes being the Ordinary there. How he wishes he could have stayed on in New York as the Vatican Permanent Observer. Now his remit is to clear up the decades old mess in the Archdiocese. Not an attractive idea ofr a man who had such ambition.

No Cardinal's hat either-Given the trajectory of Pope Francis' consistories it may well be Bishop Willie Walsh who gets the honour
