Former Vatican diplomat indicted on child pornography charges

Mgr Carlo Alberto Capella was recalled from Washington last year

A Vatican court indicted Mgr Carlo Alberto Capella, a former staff member at the Vatican nunciature in Washington, and ordered him to stand trial beginning June 22 on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography.
Vatican City State’s criminal court issued the indictment on June 9, the Vatican press office announced. Mgr Capella has been held in a jail cell in the Vatican police barracks since April 9.
Mgr Capella is accused of having and exchanging with others “a large quantity” of child pornography; the quantity is such that the charges are considered “aggravated” by the Vatican City court.
If found guilty, he faces a prison sentence of one year to five years and a fine from 2,500 to 50,000 euros (about $3,000-60,000). However, according to Vatican law, “the penalty is increased if a considerable quantity of pornographic material is involved.”
The 50-year-old Italian monsignor had been working in Washington just over a year when he was recalled to the Vatican after the US State Department notified the Holy See of his possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images.
“The Holy See, following the practice of sovereign states, recalled the priest in question, who is currently in Vatican City,” and opened the investigation, the Vatican press office said on September 15.
Then, police in Canada issued a nationwide arrest warrant for Mgr Capella on charges of accessing, possessing and distributing child pornography.
“Investigators believe that the offences occurred while the suspect was visiting a place of worship in Windsor,” the police statement said. A spokesman for the Diocese of London, Ontario, which includes Windsor, confirmed at the time “that it was asked to, and did, assist in an investigation around suspicions involving Mgr Capella’s possible violations of child pornography laws by using a computer address at a local church.”
Mgr Capella, was born in Carpi, Italy, and ordained to the priesthood in 1993 for the Archdiocese of Milan. After studying at the Vatican diplomatic academy in Rome, he entered the Vatican diplomatic service in 2004. He had worked since the summer of 2016 at the Vatican nunciature in Washington.
Under the same laws promulgated by Pope Francis in 2013, Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, the former nuncio to the Dominican Republic, was charged in 2015 with the sexual abuse of minors in the Dominican Republic, possession of child pornography, causing serious psychological distress and harm to adolescent victims of sexual abuse and for offending religious and Christian morals with his repeated use of online pornography abroad and on Vatican City State property. He died in August 2015 before his trial could begin.

  3. Another example of the clergy never learning. Or was he so stupid as to think diplomatic immunity would protect him?

Such stories also make me curious as to what a prison cell looks like in the Vatican? And what is prison life like there? Is he brought to a beautiful church for Divine Office and Mass multiple times a day? Or left to pray alone in his cell?

It also evokes the cynic that Maynooth created in me... does the Vatican offer real punishment or protect their men from Double Jeopardy by 'trialling' them. In any case it will be interesting to see if this 50 year old survives his meals/drinks until trial.

    1. The institutional Roman Catholic harlot has a long history of treating her offending collared pimps with far greater leniency than civil courts; this discrepancy is a cause of great injustice and anger. In fact, it is one of the reasons that 'whoremonger' , Thomas Beckitt, (yes, Beckit was wont to use such language himself, his sainted tongue firing this very insult at one of the four knights in Canterbury Cathedral...just before they shoved him off this mortal coil😆) was despatched here, because he disagreed, hotly and publicly, with King Henry II that clerics should be tried in the kings' courts...like everyone else.

Roman Catholic bleeps have always tried to make special cases for themselves...it's a major reason they are so despised.

Look what the ex-Nazi pope did with that priest sleazebag, Maciel...he was 'sentenced' 😅 to a life of 'prayer and penitence' for serial sexual offences against mostly boys.

It’s a mistake to make the assumptions you do about those who spent two years on the seminarist philosophy course.,

It was mostly a matter of not matriculating. This itself depended on LC or A levels. There are many late developers who go on to high achievement whose second-level results dont reflect their abilities.

Your comments indicate a chauvinism which puts too much faith in your own virtual superiority on the basis that you did a three-year course.

The poor judgement you reveal all these years later is more telling than the fact that you managed to get to do a degree.

  11. I recognise Fr Armand de Malleray in the group photo above, he is the superior of the FSSP in the UK. He is another one about whom I have heard mixed reports, with a few testifying to his pious manner. Though friends in the Westminster Diocese have noted rumours of a beautiful young redhead woman he is known to have great affection for, at a monthly Latin Mass he says for young adults in London. He apparently spends most of the evening sat with her, and seldom pays much attention to anyone else. I'm all in favour of friendships between priests and women, but this obvious favouritism has apparently raised a few eyebrows.

    1. The gathering mentioned by 12:33 is Juventutem, for traditional young Catholics. I have only been to two in the last six months, but on both occasions have observed the behaviour described. I don't know who the young woman is, but he clearly has great affection for her.

    2. I was intrigued by the redhead and until I saw it was a lady I thought that it was Rory Coyle of Armagh.

      Or maybe it is?

    3. The young woman discussed was not present at the Ordination, she is based in London. But as far as I'm aware there is only one redhead who is an organiser and influence in this Juventutem group, so these comments must be about her.

In which case if it is, there is far more here going on behind the scenes. The said lovely young woman was recently asked to organise a group of young Traditionalists to meet with Cardinal Nichols at the Archbishop's House. There are rumours suggesting Fr de Mallery and him are in conversation to establish a new traditional parish in London, and the young lady mentioned has had a considerable involvement over these developments. The two are clearly very close.

    4. @14:00 Those in the know are aware of who the young woman is, apparently she is a student Nurse in her mid-20s, who completed a previous degree elsewhere. Like Fr Armand de Malleray, she is clearly very intelligent and shares a love for the Traditional Mass. nevertheless, if rumours about a questionable friendship and underhand negotiations are true, it could make a worthwhile future blog, Pat?

    11. In response to 18:58, not when there are implications of secretive negotiations going on between the Cardinal and this priest, who as the superior of a religious 'order', has a duty of openness and honesty towards the laity and his colleagues.

As far as the young woman is concerned, it seems her involement in such matters is primarily due to his apparent affection and attention towards her, which also raises questions.

      Delete
    12. In addition to my earlier comment at 13:45, on the last occasion I attended the Juventutem Mass back in April, I was also made aware that the young woman had only been attending for a couple of months, and had already developed a significant involvement and influence in comparison with others who have gone for years. Maybe this confirms the point made @19;29, that such influence is the result of favouritism and a close friendship by Fr DM?

    16. I am well acquainted with the FSSP and the Diocese of Westminster, so this particular thread has been of interest to me today. Two thoughts have arisen:

      1. Whilst Cardinal Nichols is known as both a liberal and a careerist, the latter certainly takes precedence. Much of his success has depended on his appeasing and diplomatic negotiations with other high ranking clerical officials from across the liturgical spectrum. It thus wouldn't surprise me if rumours of negotiations to establish a parish for the Latin Mass movement were well underway.

      2. As of last Saturday, there are now four FSSP priests serving Saint Mary's Shrine Parish in Warrington. For such a small parish, and for an order that prides itself on expansion over the last few years, this is an unusual number. The FSSP requires all its priests to live in communities of at least two, so it wouldn't surprise me again, if the assignment of Fr Phipps to Warrington wasn't cleverly devised to allow Fr De Malleray and another priest to establish a new base in London.

These are just my thoughts, but knowing how the FSSP works over here in the US, I can see that far more is going on that we do not, but should, know about.

There is an online global petition, organised by We are Church Ireland, that calls on Pope Francis to show leadership and to have removed such offensive catechetical phrases as 'intrinsically disordered'. These are demeaning to LGBT people and no church which claims to represent the will of God should tolerate their use.

In recent weeks, Pope Francis told Chilean-abuse survivor, Juan Carlos Cruz, that God had made him gay. How, then, can the Roman Catholic Church continue to refer to LGBT people as 'disordered'?

These offensive and unchristian phrases must go.

    1. Why does a minority religion like the Presbyterian Church get picked on by the media for banning baptisms for the children of same sex parents when it is apparent that the parents will not teach the sinfulness of homosexuality to the children? The Catholic Church does the same rule and indeed in its sacred tradition has more abusive statements against LGB than the Bible has. Why is there no pressure on the Church to apologise for those traditions? The pope is esteemed despite his bigoted Amoris Laetitia which accuses committed gay relationships of not having the remotest resemblance to marriage as set up by God. And the Church quotes the text banning gay sex on pain of being stoned to death as proving homosexuality is a sin. That is gross passive aggression and an insult to the innocent men who died. It is Catholic doctrine that Jesus has made it a sin if you take communion while living in a same sex relationship or being unrepentant for having gay sex. The Church says the homosexual is not a full member until he repents and goes to confession and repents for ever thinking that homosexuality is not a sin.

I don't care for Presbyterianism as a religion - its a false religion. But that is not the point. We are getting to the point where we are asked to pretend that gay sex being a sin is not a Christian teaching. That is a lie. LGBT rights is one thing but it must never be turned into an ideology. The hate against their religion by the woman and her gay daughter contrasts with the lack of vitriol that comes from the Church which merely says, "we are not excluding you. Here is what you must do. Our religion our rules. It is up to you and we will respect your right to walk away."

      Delete
    2. 14:10, I expect that the gay parents of any child would teach him or her that not loving another is what is sinful in God's eyes. You are confusing Christian teaching with the teaching of Christ; the two haven't always been morally commensurate with each other.

If Presbyterianism is a 'false religion', then so, too, is Roman Catholicism, since it does not faithfully teach the twin commandments of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew: first, love of God above all things; and second (and like the first) love of one's neighbour as if he were your very self.

Would you be happy at being described as 'intrinsically disordered'? Forget the Aristotalian bullshit that is used in defence of such a dehumanising phrase: the phrase is toxic, and morally obnoxious. That it was the ex-Nazi pope who ensured its use in the Catechism of the Catholic Church doesn't surprise me in the least.

Nor does your pointed avoidance of this petition.

    6. No, it isn't, you prune. Not solely. The Nazis were primarily, and foundationally, a political party, attempting to sell National Socialism (Nazism) to the German people.

Hitler Youth was the youth branch of that political party. Hence its young people were ALL Nazis by membership. (And they were some of the most fanatical Nazis, displaying courage and daring in the closing days of WWII, especially against the invading Red Army.

No, I am not an 'obnoxious creep'; but you are a coward for wanting to shy away from this uncomfortable truth about the German Pope Emeritus.

Given this odious little man's experience of the evil of labelling groups of people, like the Jews, with such dehumanising monikers the Nazi's coined, you'd have thought him less inclined to follow their example (IF he had truly repented of his Nazi past), by labelling others as 'intrinsically disordered'.

      Delete
    11. 00:18, yes, it was a matter of choice. I've made this argument here before, but it seems some of you are just too thick to understand simple statements. So I'll try, yet again, to make my point as mono- syllabically as possible.

JOSEF RATZINGER COULD HAVE SAID 'NO'.

Is this simple enough for you to understand? He wasn't without options here. But he chose to save his own skin rather than sacrifice for Christ against the most evil ideology in human history. Yes, there would have been consequences for him, but there was a more serious consequence for little Maria Goretti when she, three years younger than the odious German pope, said 'no' to her aggressor, who then stabbed the 11-year-old girl to death.

Ratzinger was fourteen years of age, older than little Maria, and yet this girl showed more b***s than her odious, older counterpart.

I am sick, sore and tired hearing of Ratzinger's 'piety' as a young person, and yet not seeing one shred of evidence for his willingness to suffer or die for Christ. And Nazism was much, much worse morally than anything little Maria's aggressor had in mind. Ratzinger, and his equally spineless older brother Georg, had, therfore, greater moral imperative to make a stand for Christ against the most evil ideology in human history.

But then, I did say they were both 'spineless'.😆

      Delete
    12. St Maria Goretti was faced with obvious evil in Allessandro Serenelli and she resisted him. Some children would not have had her acutely developed awareness of evil and would not have been able to resist Serenelli. They would have been every bit as innocent as she was.

Maria Goretti, it was testified about her, was already a saint and would have gone on to be a saint had she never met Serenelli.

At 14 years old, Josef Ratzinger could not possibly have known the true reality of the evil of Nazism that is well known to us with the advantages of history.

You’re blaming a fourteen year old boy and calling him a “Nazi” is perverse and it only further delineates your own unhinged bias and inability to be reasonable, Mr “Carta”.

      Delete
    13. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the utter, uncontaminated, award-deserving stupidity of your post.

At 14 years of age, the odious, backboneless Ratzinger, being intellectually well ahead of his peers, was very well aware of the intrinsic and horrifying evil of German Nazism. It was 1941 when this 'pious' yellowbelly chose to join the Nazi party's junior wing, the Hitler Youth.

Kristallnacht was already three years in the past when this coward chose to join the Hitler Youth. And the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws had been passed two years before, in 1936.

There is no excuse for this morally obnoxious little man: he knew the virulent and violent anti-Semitic evil of National Socialism...and yet CHOSE to join a party run by the 'Hitler Gang', as reporters following the Nuremberg trials in 1946 would describe the leading Nazis.

You're as cowardly and pathetic as Ratzinger himself, for attempting to defend the grave moral culpability of this yellowbelly's actions.

Imagine: a little 11-year-old girl proved herself more of a 'man' and Christian than the despicable and distinctly odious Josef Ratzinger. (Jeez! I feel the need to shower after even mentioning this disgusting creep's name. Ugh!😆)

And it's "their", by the way.

  21. Patsy why are you always denigrating The Tridentine Mass it was the only Mass for over four hundred years. It was the only Mass You knew until 1969 when we were forced to endure The Novus Ordo concocted by the auld Mason Bugninni and the dreadful Montini who promulgated. By there fruits shall you know them. Well we can all see the fruits lowest Mass attendance ever and heresy, apostacy and no vocations! May Our Lady Terror of Heretics crush them under her heal and restore The One True Church.

  27. There is only one Ignoramus and its Magna Carta. I did not say th Tridentine Msss was the only Mass, I saidit was the only Mass celebratedfor 400 years after the Coucil of Trent, until the changes imposed on the Faithful after the disaster of Vatican II. I suggest Magna Carter crawls back to her small unrecognised illegal group "We are Church"! I remind her There is only One Church

    1. 08:51, you're hankering after a particular FORM of Mass; you crave external display rather than what the Mass actually is.

You are not comfortable living in modernity; you, and those like you, are social and psychological misfits. Others might describe you all as just one, huge, unfunny joke.

People like you lack spiritual substance, and the showy, self-regarding priests who, oh so willingly pander to your ostentatious tastes, are the very people who have brought the Body of Christ to the low point we see today.

Mass is beautiful in ANY form, but the form you crave does not focus on Christ, but on the overweening self-importance of so-called 'priests' (like the self-aggrandising clowns in the above photo)

  28. Oh! Magna Dear your at it again you can't help yourself. The only Social and Psychological misfit is you. If you think that te Holy Mass is beautiful in any form you need to go to an optician for sght and hearing test. The Novus Ordo Mess as I call it is truly that a Mess. It is banal awful not Carholic and anything but beautiful.you have no spiritual substance and want to bring everything down to the lowst common denominator Your comments to anyone who is traditional shows you to be the mean spirited nasty vicious lefty old Queen tha you are!

    1. Thank you, 13:37.

You have just proven that my earlier comment struck a liturgical nail squarely on its head.

Jesus, the Real Presence, means absolutely nothing to you, and your kind, who prefer to be threatically entertained at Mass with baroque liturgy and rite rather than spiritually enriched and graced through the presence of Jesus, body, blood, soul, and divinity. You want to feast the senses, but starve the spirit. And your crass remark, 'if you think that the Holy Mass is beautiful in any form, you need to go to an optician, is proof of it.

The Mass is beautiful because Christ is present; the rest is unnecessary baubles.😆

  29. Magna you just don't get it do you for the Mass to be valid and for Our Lord to be present Body Blood Soul and Divinity their has to be Matter Form and Intention by the celebrating priest this is certainly not evident in many Novis Ordo Messes and the modernist priests who say them The Tridentine Mass has nourished my soul and my belief in he Real Presence for 67 years and your crass remarks "That me and my kind have to be theatrically entertained" tells just exactly what you are you cannot stand Catholics who love the beauty of the Traditional Roman Rite I thank God and His Blessed Mother that despite you and your kind we are still able able to attend The Adorable Sacrifice of The Mass which we have attended all our lives instead of having to put up with the horrible protestant communion service you and all your kind would want to foist on us.

  30. No priest can make Christ present on our altars: he is present there of his OWN accord (forget the Thomistic junk about 'Matter, Form...' yawn😪), because Jesus invited his disciples to 'do this in memory of me'. He required only one thing: their obedience to his invitation, and he would do the rest.

Are you really so stupid (so legalistically OCD) as to believe that the Tridentine Rite, anymore than what you call the 'Novus Ordo Rite', mirrors precisely the form of Jewish Passover celebration expressed in Jesus' own time? No, neither does. So if you, arrogantly, are going to dismiss the possibility of the Real Presence during today's order of Mass on such ridiculous grounds as 'Matter, Form...zzzzzz😪, you must likewise dismiss its possibility during the Tridentine Rite (which, incidentally, has least in common with the ancient Jewish Rite of Passover).

You're an anachronism. And a very sad one at that.

  31. Magna the veil has dropped I see you are not a Catholic or you would know that of course it is the priest standing at the Altar as the Altar Christus who confects the Transubstansiation that brings the Our Lord to our Altars. Iwish you would cease to weary us with your pureile prattle Our lord was not celebrating the Jewish passover He was instituting The Blessed Sacrament. You are right that The Tridentine Mass has least in common with the jewish passover, its not supposed to, you Cretin! it is the Holy Sacrifice of The Mass. no doubt whatever service you attend will have plenty in common with the jewish rite. However I am a Catholic and only interested in my own Holy Religion. in which. I am very happy. I am not sad at all only when I hear the rubbish spouted by cretins like you. Your an Apostate and a really mad one at that!
