OSCOTT SEMINARY - MAYNOOTH LIKE PROBLEMS?

LETTER RECEIVED ABOUT OSCOTT

UNREDACTED COPY SENT TO EACH ARCHBISHOP IN ENGLAND, WALES AND SCOTLAND

News on the Marsden Sacking at Oscott College

Dear Pat,

In addition to your recent blog on Oscott College, this is the latest on the sacking of Father David Marsden SCJ. Forget Maynooth, at least for the next year. You couldn't write this stuff and you need to get it out ASAP.

Oscott's gay sage goes back decades well before Marsden arrived. For a long time the seminary has been a place of gay activity but it has always been covered up by the staff and students, until recently.

......................... I am really concerned about someone who is to be ordained.

Five or six years ago there was a "departure" surrounding gay sex. An early years seminarian was dropped by his bishop - Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx for having a sexual relationship with someone from Xxxxxxxx Diocese and someone from Xxxxxxx Diocese. Both of these seminarians were later ordained, priests.

The reason XXXX was asked to leave, and not them, had something to do with a Xxxxxxx Diocese priest called Xxxxxxxxx who was then on the staff. This guy was known to have favourites and XXXX was one of them.

THE COLLEGE BAR:

The college bar is known among students and visitors as very camp and a former Rector, Oakley, said it was a place "respectable students avoid". Apparently, Pat, you hear everything there from how much some seminarians can "cum" to who's F****** who in the seminary and the clergy. You see staff and visitors very drunk and all drinks are at reduced prices.

A former seminarian called it: "THE WORST GAY BAR IN THE COUNTRY".

Many of the seminarian's have women's names - Christine, Vera, Danielle, Mary, Lydia, Princess, Geraldine and one called Herbert who likes younger sems. They call each other as "she" or "queen".

Another lad was called "Tanner" He appeared on your blog some time ago and Tanner's father was so upset at seeing him on your blog that he wanted to take him out of Oscott right away.

Five or six years ago a member of staff called Billo" resigned because of the seminary's support for gay seminarians.

FATHER MARSDEN:

The people responsible for getting rid of Father Marsden were a staff member and seminarian who had alcohol and homosexuality problems.

One person in the college wears makeup regularly and is often escorted to his room drunk by seminarians.

Another seminarian has been described as: " a bisexual who eats books".

Another seminarian has been seen walking around the grounds drunk, with tears in his eyes.

This year in March/April a top of the range Mercedes parked in the college grounds. A seminarian, a man, and a woman were standing by the car. The seminarian pulled the woman close and kissed her on the lips.

The seminarian and the woman were having a row about a priest the seminarian was close to.

Eventually, the seminarian was heard shouting: "I LOVE HIM".

One seminarian was forced to give a homily apologizing to the other seminarians about not being a good brother. Since then he has gone very quiet and has started hanging about with the "holy ones".

.............................

The question is Pat, with Marsden's sacking how long can things continue like this?

ENGLISH CATHOLIC BISHOPS 2013

What will bishops like Joseph Toal, Peter Doyle, John Arnold Mark Davies and Bernard Longley do when they find out they've been misled about their seminarians, some of whom are now priests?

THE SCOTTISH CATHOLIC BISHOPS 2017

How many of Xxxxx phone contacts in Oscott (whose texts and calls could now end up on the internet) approach Oakley and Keane and be honest with them?

Sex, lies, cover-up and illegal behavior.

Is this the Catholic Priesthood at Oscott College?

PAT SAYS:

It is very interesting that Father Marsden was despatched from both Maynooth and Oscott colleges.

Father Marsden is, by all accounts, a very sincere and faithful priest who seeks to uphold Catholic teaching and practice.

And yet he was unwelcome in these Irish and English seminaries.

His enemies seem to be actively gay priests and seminarians.

I think that Father Marsden has a duty to speak out and tell the Catholics of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales about what is going on in the seminaries.

  2. Fr Marsden is a Jesuit priest. From my experience if Maynooth and Jesuits I am inclined to support Fr. Marsden.

    2. That would be news to him. He's a Sacred Heart Father. He doesn't need to say anything. His departure again speaks volumes. In a similar situation I fell for the "stay and make a difference" line and I will forever regret it.

      Anon @ 09:08: Your sentence is intriguing "I fell for the "stay and make a difference" line and I will forever regret it.
      I'm wondering if:
      You remained in a seminary and was ordained;
      If ordained, are you still in ministry;
      If not in ministry after ordination when and why did you leave;
      If still in ministry is your regret linked to the difficult position clerics now find themselves in with general public disdain;
      Or do your regrets relate more to a loss of belief in the 'religion of your youth'.

      I'm genuinely interested in understanding your views, and indeed any other ex seminarians ordained or otherwise.
      For what it's worth: leaving, for me in third Divinity was a difficult decision. I had decided the clerical life was not for me, but frankly was 'scared' at the prospect of seeking alternatives and being viewed as a failure.
      50+ years on, I certainly have no regrets.

    5. 10.40 - MMM - Interesting questions. After 35 plus years of ministry having gone through very challenging situations, personally, emotionally and spiritually; having had to rethink and reimagine my ministry as a priest on many occasions in light of the social and cultural changes in our country and in light of the many church scandals, of which we are all aware, I chose to stay, (though at times tempted to leave), because I value the essence of the gospel of Christ. I value the vision of the early Christian Church which I try to create in my parish. I value the tenets of Christianity and have found its mystical and spiritual depths to be inspiring. I stay because I try only to focus on what's given to me to care for. Outside of that territory I will have nothing to do with any teaching or promulgation that crushes people in every way and have spoken against such unnecessary burdens being placed on people. I try to keep the vision of Christ alive for each person who participates in our community and encourage that they and all of us live the "gospel" as taught by Christ. I find that this approach, imbued with respect, tolerance, kindness, mercy, looking out for others, encouragement, being there to listen and acting appropriately, produces positive fruits and deepens my own commitment. Changing landscapes call for a radical rethink at an individual level and must be done because the leadership we presently have in the Church is not visionary or creative enough. I make the choice each day to stay with what I was given over 35 years ago. It now requires that daily awareness and rethink, all possible because of my profound belief in God's love and grace.

    6. None of the above, MMM. Sorry to disappoint. I clung to my job in the seminary for ten years longer than I need have done. It's only now that everything is so much worse that I see what a waste it was of the best years of my life.

      I am genuinely sorry to hear that you have such big regrets.

      Maybe now is the time to follow your dreams - whatever they may be?

      Thanks Anon @12:06 for a thoughtful sincere comment. Your parishoners no doubt appreciate your approach.

      A@12:09: Why so? Your reference to " so much worse" suggests your regret relates to current derision of clergy. Your use of the past tense in referring to the wasted ten years implies a kind of rejection of previous beliefs.
      Could you explain a little more please?
      And thank you both for commenting.

  4. Another strange story. How is is seminaries seem to have become amplified hotbeds of sexual activity and expression. I know I said I never saw any untoward activity in the Irish College in Rome in my time there. But there was a rumour of the place being cleaned out pre 1981. Nobody ever said much about it but I wonder what if anything went on

  7. There are worse Seminaries for gay goings on than Oscott. Oscott was always considered a walk in the park in comparison to other places. Although having Amy McDonald as Rector you do often wonder. Some weird staff from other dioceses at present who need to be helped to come out of the closet too.

  14. Pat. Many of the Faithful who will attend the annual Clinard Novena will also be intending to travel south later for the World Families Day.
    Many of these souls will be on benefits or on low or restricted incomes.
    I hope that the good and holy Fathers at Clonard advocate that participants in the novena reduce their offerings and curtail their spending on religious knickknacks and objects of piety so that they can afford the visit south later to see the Holy Father.
    I have no doubt that the good Fathers will be only too pleased to see a decline in the income if they know it will assist with the budgets for many famillies’ Dublin travel plans.
