BISHOP FORT

French bishop to stand trial

ORLEANS, France: The former bishop of the French city of Orleans, Andre Fort, was ordered on Thursday to stand trial for failing to report a paedophile priest in his diocese.
Fort, who was bishop of the northern city between 2002 and his retirement in 2010, was charged last June over allegations that he turned a blind eye to child abuse by priest Pierre de Castelet.
De Castlelet

Fort had moved de Castelet into roles where he did not have contact with children, but did not inform the police about accusations by a man who said he and others had been abused by the priest as a child.
"My client thought this young man did not want his accusations to be made public, but that he just wanted to make sure Pierre de Castelet had no more contact with children," Fort’s lawyer Benoit de Gaullier told AFP.
He added that Fort "acknowledges that he is to face trial, and he will explain himself". De Castelet is accused of abuse dating back to 1993 when he served as chaplain at a camp for young Christians and was charged in 2012. He also worked as a chaplain for the European Scouts movement.
His accuser, Olivier Savignac, said he had reported the priest to Fort personally in 2010, saying he believed de Castelet could have abused around 10 other children. It was Fort’s successor Jacques Blaquart who reported de Castelet to authorities after Savignac contacted him in 2011.

Fort is not the first French bishop to be charged with failing to report paedophilia. In 2001, Bayeux bishop Pierre Pican was given a three-month suspended jail sentence for a similar offence.

A VERY GOOD PRIEST

I was in Antrim Hospital the other day and met a very good priest I haven't met for 35 years - Father Hugh O'Hagan - the parish priest of Ahoghill in County Antrim.

Father Hugh is 55 years a priest this year and I replaced him as the curate in Kilkeel in 1983.

But I have regular reports about Father Hugh from parishioners in Ahoghill. The people there love him.

He is famous for a number of things:

1. His absolute dedication to the sick, the dying and the bereaved.

2. His holiness and prayerfulness.

3. His home visitation.

Hugh is what we were used to years ago - a good and holy priest who has never wandered from the path.

I know that there are good priests like this all over.

And how hurt and embarrassed they must be by the misbehaviour of so many of their colleagues.

  1. Buckley, what a vile a reprehensible creature you are. You who vilify, calumniate and destroy so many priests without justification you will rot in hell.

  2. Fr. Hugh seems a very genuine man - a man worth visiting in order to seek healing - with an open heart and compassionate nature.

I wonder could it be arranged? I'd be forever grateful and most genuinely appreciative.

    4. There is no such thing as a good priest. You can’t be a good man and a good priest. Has Magna Carta taught you nothing, Pat?

      Delete
    5. That's not true.

There are and have been many priests who had genuine faith, prayed and performed immense service to others.

What about Maximilian Kolbe who offered himself as a replacement for a man sentenced to the starvation bunker?

I have know some right clerical demons.

But I've also known some fine men who were priests.

      Delete
    6. In fairness Pat fair play to you for mentioning Fr Kolbe. Truly a man of God.

      Delete
    7. I have great admiration for Fr. Kolbe.

I have also visited and prayed in his death cell in Poland.

      Delete
    8. But to whom would Kolbe have turned if he had been instructed by his superior to cover up child abuse or murder?

A good priest will honour his freely made vow or promise of obedience; a good man would not honour it.

You cannot be both a good man and a good priest: you must choose.

    9. It's Saint Maximillan not Fr. Ignoramus. He was sentenced to the gas chamber not starvation bunker

    11. St Maximilian died in a starvation bunker with a number of other prisoners. He was the last remaining alive after two weeks and was killed with lethal injection.

Magna Carta, words simply fail me at your twisted and perverse notions of priesthood and humanity.

A good priest would not obey an instruction by his superior to cover up child abuse because it is contrary to the Gospel.

A good priest will be a good man and a good man will be a good priest.

You really are far gone in your spite and hatred. God help you.

    12. 14:19 and 14:25, you both know I have a point, but you're both moral cowards (and, I suspect, Roman Catholic priests).

14:19, yes, he gave his life for others, but this was not my point, as you well know. Stop ducking the issue here. He may have sacrificed himself, but would Kolbe have sacrificed the physical and psychological welfare of children for his vow of obedience? We may never know now. But if he was a 'good' priest, then then answer is 'yes'.

14:35 I can't believe, given what we now know about the cover-ups in the Roman Catholic Church, that you could seriously come out with such drivel as this: 'A good priest would not obey an instruction by his superior to cover up child abuse because it is contrary to the Gospel.' This is precisely what all of those involved in cover-ups did! And some, like Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, didn't even have to be ordered by anyone to do this: they did it of their own accord.

Fr John Brady was instructed, with others, to cover up (to conceal), back in 1975, the sexual abuse of two boys by Fr Brendan Smith. They all did this knowing the Gospel, but not honouring it. Why? Because they each made Rome their God when they made promises to obey their bishops: they exchanged their consciences for an idol.

      Your naivety is appalling.

    13. Would you have an e-mail address available for Fr. Hugh O'Hagan please?

I would perhaps prefer to e-mail first or do you think a phone call would work equally as well Pat?

      Thank you in advance.

    16. Those who covered up child abuse were NOT “good priests”, you twisted, moronic and bigoted fool, Magna Carta. They were bad priests. The gospel virtue of obedience does not permit one to cover up sin. Those who covered up sin in the Church were not in any sense “good”. They were BAD no matter what motives they claimed for themselves.

      Delete
    17. 21:45 Yes, they were good priests, either because they obeyed orders, (like Fr John Brady), or because they acted on their own initiative (like Cardinal Josef Ratzinger at the CDF) to protect the 'good' name of the institutional Roman Catholic Church and the basis for clerical authority.

Why the hell do you think priests are required to make vows/promises of obedience?

And we are not speaking here of 'the gospel virtue of obedience', but of the canonical requirement on ordinands to obey those in authority over them, that is, bishops.

Some of you people are obtuse beyond belief.😕

  17. On the subject of French priests, I took the opportunity when visiting London last weekend to attend the Latin Mass organised for young people, by the FSSP priest Fr Armand de Malleray. After reading the comments on a blog the other week, I wanted to test the suggestions made for myself. The Mass itself was celebrated by the newly ordained Fr Seth Phipps, whose Ordination photos appeared on here some weeks ago. Both him and de Malleray were resplendent in lace.

The social that followed was interesting, whilst I noted Fr de Malleray spent time mixing with those attended, he certainly spent a lot of time talking with the previously mentioned young redheads woman, certainly far more than anyone else. I do agree that such obvious favoritism is wrong when in such a public notice.

    1. For Heaven's sake, not this again! The suggestions of anything more than a close friendship are both false and malicious, so stop spreading falsities. To lie and to gossip is a sin.

    2. @17:47 These rumours are false and untrue, stop gossiping about two innocent friends. People's reputations are damaged by people like you

      Delete
    3. The priest and young woman are both adults, and thus they have a right to consent and be as they wish with each other. So long as there is no public scandal, their association/relationship is none of our business

      Delete
    4. @17:47 How can you be sure friendship has not been mistaken for 'favouritism'? Priests are human beings, and entitled to have friends, who they will naturally spend more time with than complete strangers, with whom they may have little in common. You suggested that Father rightly greeted others, as a priest should, but he is clearly good friends with the young woman, who he probably sees at these Masses which are only once a month. As a result, he is perfectly just in spending more time talking to her, as he's probably too busy to spend any more time. That is definitely how I behave with friends I see so infrequently!

      Delete
    5. I wish you would let this matter drop. We do not know whether those mentioned are aware of these unfair comments, or indeed those with malicious intentions against them. I'm inclined to believe this is yet another story concocted to destroy the reputations of traditional Catholics. It will not succeed

      Delete
    6. I think all of you should know that the young woman targeted in the initial comments published a couple of weeks ago was made aware of them by friends also active in the Traditional young Catholic scene in London, and was quite upset. She is a wonderful young lady who has much to offer the Church, and since Christmas has worked hard as an organiser of this and other events, where she is both respected and appreciated. Please leave her alone!

Isn't this good news? Plus, the Crime Pk Park, Knock and RDS events are completely full. No more tickets. There is a record 20,000 coming from abroad. Whatever we may say, think or believe, no other figurehead would gather such crowds. Only for insurance, security and health and safety issues, 600,000 or more would have requested tickets. Surely, a newsworthy piece of information. I hope and pray that Pope Francis will inspire all who listen to him. Between all events a million plus have secured tickets.
