CARDINAL MC CARRICK

The Pope has ordered him to maintain a life of 'prayer and penance'
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the College of Cardinals of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, retired Archbishop of Washington, and has ordered him to maintain “a life of prayer and penance” until a canonical trial examines accusations that he sexually abused minors.
The Vatican press office said that the previous evening Pope Francis had received Cardinal McCarrick’s letter of “resignation as a member of the College of Cardinals.”
“Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the cardinalate and has ordered his suspension from the exercise of any public ministry, together with the obligation to remain in a house yet to be indicated to him, for a life of prayer and penance until the accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial,” the Vatican statement said.
In late June, Cardinal McCarrick, the 88-year-old retired Archbishop of Washington, said he would no longer exercise any public ministry “in obedience” to the Vatican after an allegation he abused a teenager 47 years ago in the Archdiocese of New York was found credible. The cardinal has said he is innocent.

In the weeks that followed the announcement, another man came forward claiming he was abused as a child by Cardinal McCarrick and several former seminarians have spoken out about being sexually harassed by the cardinal at a beach house he had.
Although unusual, withdrawal from the College of Cardinals in such circumstances is not unheard of. Just 10 days before then-Pope Benedict XVI retired in 2013, Scottish Cardinal Keith O’Brien announced he would not participate in the conclave to elect Pope Benedict XVI’s successor because he did not want media attention focused on him instead of the election of a new pope.
Pope Benedict XVI had accepted the cardinal’s resignation as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh after reports that three priests and a former priest had accused the cardinal of “inappropriate conduct” with them going back to the 1980s.
One week after the conclave that elected Pope Francis, the Vatican announced the new Pope accepted Cardinal O’Brien’s decision to renounce all “duties and privileges” associated with being a cardinal. He died March 19 this year.
PAT SAYS:
Mc Carrick is gone!
More than 60 years too late!
We know that he sexually abused boys, young men, seminarians, and priests.
His abuse of these poor people was known about in higher church circles for many decades - and yet - the promoted and promoted and promoted him,
They also covered up for him - depriving his victims of justice and closure.
Why?
Who did he have the dirt on?
You can be quite sure that McCarrick knows things that might bring down cardinals and archbishops, and bishops - and maybe even a pope or two!
You see the institution is rotten to the core and right to the top.
It's all about ambition, power, money, and sex.
A regular comment maker calls this institution a whore. I don't particularly like that expression - but it is true!
I think in fact to call it a whore is an insult to sex workers.
Many sex workers have more love and integrity in them than these guys we are talking about.
Mothers, look out for your son's!
Wives look out for your husbands!
Aunts look out for your nephews -
-because UNCLE TED'S partners in crime are everywhere - while not a majority - are everywhere
In the Vatican - In episcopal palaces - In monasteries - In dioceses - in parishes.

  1. shouldn't priests be living a life of prayer and penance anyways? There will be a trial, he'll be found 'guilty' and nothing will really happen. He's about 88 or so. I doubt he remembers much of the 'abuse' he incurred. So often, when we inflict abuse, be it physical, sexual, or mental, we tend to forget about it. victims however never forget. it remains with them, its built into them. in severe cases it shapes the direction of their lives for the worst. be kind to everyone you meet.

I always make it my business to smile and be kind to people. I smile and greet the lady at the local londis, though she never bids me the time of day. I smile at the guy at the petrol station and ask him 'how are things'. I wave to my neighbors when I am in the car. I acknowledge people. its nice to be nice. we never truly realize the effect our words and actions have on others. be nice. be kind

    1. I also try to be nice. The abuse I suffered screwed me up for a decade but then one say I knew I had a choice to make as to what would define me.

As for the sentence, i agree this man has only been order to do what he should be doing anyway

  3. There is no sensitivity to the Gospels among most of the Irish Bishops. Their sensitivity is singularly to negative exposure in the media. Most of them believe in two things, themselves and the Pope who appointed them. This is a universal problem in the Church.

It's his human condition and I'm afraid he shouteth too much - his angst being a deep inner state of his own broken humanity. He ain't a prophet!! You, Pat, should advise him not to grow deeply into despair. We all have reason to be dissatisfied by Church reality but constantly carping and ranting in public is not the solution...

      Delete
    4. @12.31 doesnt sound like a bad solution to me. What you call carping and ranting in public is often righteous anger and indignation. And it might help to hasten the collapse of the corrupt structures, dynamics and personnel who perpetuate all the hypocrisy.

  6. Once again the Holy Mother Church is having all this terrible scandal and Thankfully it is not swept under the carpet.
One thing I can tell you all and that is there are World Wide Many Many Good Cardinals, Bishops, Priests and Religious Sisters and Brothers.
Yes there are a few bad apples but they are getting routed out.
rather than this blog being interested in USA it should help the Bishops of Ireland to get rid of these bad priests and Seminarians as soon as possible but it needs to be in Facts because of Canon Law.
You may think the Papal Nuncio, Bishops and Rome are not listening but they are sadly by law they cannot reply to you but are grateful for any True information.

    5. @09.57 Yes you are right. We do need Facts and can only work with Facts. That's what Bishop Pat is busy doing, gathering Facts.
It has to be said though that even when the Facts are staring them in the face people in the Vatican dont act. They only act out of a desire for self preservation or to preserve the institution.

    1. Shortly after arriving at Quarr (Queer) Abbey for our pre profession retreat in March 89, Cuthbert Brogan
myself and one or two Quarr monks went for a walk around the grounds during which the conversation turned to the subject of "Orientation." It was all rather guarded sort of "Back of the bike shed" stuff with plenty of thrown glances and nods and winks now I look back. I remember at one point considering that they might actually be talking about navigation! Perhaps they were in a way! Navigating your way around the who's who and building up a map of similar terrain. I think Cuthbert was by then already quite adept at these dark arts, building networks, associates and friends to call on and watch each others back or risk their own dirty laundry being exposed!

    2. 15.04: Pat you know very well what "queer" is....from your experience..but It's offensively used here....do you care?

    3. 17:55 Many LGBT+ peoples journeys of empowerment have included "Owning" the "Q" word. Others like to use it where the gender binary is inappropriate. Certainly it has been used as a very cruel term of abuse. I am Queer myself and like so many, LGBT+ & Straight, have experienced the trauma and abuse that so often occurs when sexuality comes up against or is contained within the structures of the institutional church. Others have said it far better and eloquently than me, but put simply it is a narcissistic psychopath's dream playground!

      Delete
    7. 22:42 The word Vendetta does not necessarily denote unjust. It does denote long and bitter. It has been long but is slightly less bitter since having been brought into fuller consciousness and the realisation that Brogan is just another player within the institution. My primary concern is the safeguarding of others, especially those who are hypnotised by all the bones, gold and assorted tat. I kept my counsel for years believing the best of him but as the scales gradually fell from my eyes I realised I had been used abused and duped. Cuthbert must leave F'bro and lead a life of prayer and penance in a foreign house and kept away from impressionable young people. Or the church should remove the abbeys canonical status and laicise Cuthbert. Until then, If I can prevent anyone else from being taken in and hurt, I will. The Vendetta goes on! As long as it takes!

  15. I suggest the alleged Priests, who say they visit this blog daily, say their prayers and dedicate themselves to the BVM for help and guidance. Priests who become laicised are those who stop praying. Anyway, diocesan priesthood must be very difficult. I imagine the support network is non-existent or perhaps a remnant of a support network is in tatters. I often think the "religious" boys are better supported.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As one of those priests who was granted a dispensation from priestly promises, how dare you say that it was because I stopped praying. I and many others had the courage to leave a very comfortable way of life and find a new career because I knew I wasn't called by God to live a priestly life.I gave the priesthood a considerable period of my life, and left without causing scandal or hurt of any kind. And my Bishop was very good when I told him I was leaving. Far far too many priests are caught in an unhappy situation and should leave. Such self imposed misery simply leads to the all too prevalent dysfunction that Bishop Pat informs us of every day. Don't make sweeping statements about priest who leave the ministry......it's those who stay you should be worrying about.

Its these false double life clergy and seminarians that need to GO and GO now.

  17. Like 17:16 I left priesthood because I knew it wasn't for me. I prayed everyday, read my scripture and tried to keep my sermons relevant to the lives of those coming to Mass; I just couldn't cope with the loneliness and the attitude of senior priests I encountered as PPs, with the exception of one who was a saint.
I still pray, read scripture and go to Mass every week and while I read Pat's blog most days I would never dream of bashing our church, the People of God.
Priests, bishops and other religious causing scandal, now that's a different matter. They need to be brought to book, be exposed and suffer the consequences. I just can't fathom how they are still able to keep their faith, think they can pass that faith on and at the same time live exceptionally sordid lives. I see them everyday. I know them, I know what they are up to, parishioners know and do they care what we think about them? Not on your nelly.
I long for the day when the People of God can properly organise themselves, and in the absence of sufficient priests to celebrate the Eucharist each Sunday, be pragmatic about their spiritual needs and reform their Church, which will be 'the beginning of a glorious enterprise' as Gabriel Daly OSA argues in his book "The Church always in need of reform". A good read which I would recommend to everyone.
