CIVIL AUTHORITES NEED TO ROBUSTLY TAKE ON THE RC INSTITUTION

GONZALEZ

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The head of the Chilean Roman Catholic Church’s abuse prevention committee says he will not deliver a report on sex abuse committed by priests against minors to Chile’s attorney general.

The 2,300-page report was ordered by Pope Francis after he visited the South American country.

Bishop Juan Ignacio Gonzalez said Thursday that the information in the report could harm those who testified in secret if it became known. He said that “the pope is the only recipient of this report.”

Francis received the report earlier this year and then publicly denounced a “culture of abuse and cover-up” in Chile’s Catholic Church.

He also said he was ashamed that neither he nor Chilean church leaders truly ever listened to victims as the country’s abuse scandal spiraled.

PAT SAYS:

Here we have a CURRENT CASE whereby the RC bishops in CHILE are refusing to hand over a 2,300 PAGE REPORT ON CLERICAL ABUSE in Chile to the country's attorney general.

The Attorney General and his police force should raid all church property in Chile where the report could be and forcibly take it and prosecute those named in it.

The same problem existed in Dublin some years ago when cardinal Connell refused to hand over his files to the High Court.

When Diarmuid Martin took over he did hand the files over.

The problem at the heart of this issue is that civil regimes all over the world treat the RC Church differently than they do other criminal organizations and individuals.

This is partly due to the fact that The Vatican is treated as a sovereign state with more than 160 ambassadors - nuncios - around the world.

To address this problem effectively Italy should revoke it'ss 1929 concordat with The Vatican and take it back under Italian government control.

Then countries could despatch the nuncios back home and have their ambassadors to Italy deal with everything.

If The Vatican wants to have a representative to the church in a country that representative should be a religious figure only and have no standing in either diplomatic or political areas.

I was delighted when Enda Kenny sent the Roman Nuncio packing.

It was sad when that action was reversed.

Australia is a good example of how to deal with the RC institution. In Australia, there is a cardinal on trial and an archbishop convicted over different areas of abuse.

The Vatican - as a political entity needs to be destroyed for Human Rights and everyday legal reasons.

KING PUCK TAKES UP CURACY ON WEDNESDAY

Tralee Parishioner

Have you heard anymore on Jones? Its interesting because the priest he's replacing is very conservative. The head of St. John's is a Fr. Tadgh Fitzgerald, bit boring I believe, but there is also a Polish priest Fr. Piotr who is quite charismatic & popular. I wonder who knows what but I really have no idea.

PAT

Dear Parishioner, Comisserations on your soon to be curate.

The bishop, Kerry priests and people know what you are getting and are very concerned.

Please keep us informed.

Magna, darling, did you go to the appointment I made for you with Fr Jones?

    1. Yes, dearest, I did. And he was ever so reassuring! From the get-go, it was 'call me "Sean" '. And if I wasn't comfortable with such familiarity (what with his being a holy priest and ontologically superior, and all that), I should call him 'Father' (or, better still he said, 'daddy').

He didn't do much talking; very much preferred a hands-on approach. Said he was a great advocate of the 'Theology of Touch'. (Googled that, but couldn't find a single reference to it.)

He's a very down to earth priest...literally! He's so short , he kept disappearing under the footstool.😕

Yes, this priest will certainly go places.

      Count on it.😆

  2. Good Morning Pat,

You've written, "If The Vatican wants to have a representative to the church in a country that representative should be a religious figure only and have no standing in either diplomatic or political areas.".

    Well, perhaps???

It all depends on what you mean by a 'religious figure'.

My own belief is that the Archbishop of Dublin should represent the Holy See in Ireland; and in all respects.

The Archbishop would then be the man to 'carry the can' for any big problems with the Irish Church.

For example, he's the man the State would call to account if ever it came out that the RCC was still concealing crimes from the Civil Authorities; or if the Charities Regulator discovered that large sums of money were disappearing from church accounts.

Nobody has ever taken a really good hard look at how the Irish Church is administered; not even the lawyers who produced the Ferns and Dublin Reports.

    1. 02.40 Dublin is Not does not represent Ireland although the largest diocese and the residence of the Papal Nuncio.
it is the Archdiocese of Armagh that is the main as that is how Archbishop Eamon Martin is Primate of All Ireland and will continue to be.

Good Catholic should be praying for Father Jones not wishing devil thoughts in him, hopefully his Ministry will be fruitful.

  3. This is where it needs to go. I am a proud Australian, Malcolm Turnbull did Australia proud in seeking an Episopal sacking from the Pope. Michael Woods as health minister removed an Irish Law that made it a felony to conceal abuse. The Irish community on this island does not get the gravity of what these bishops actually did, not yet...

  4. The Catholic faith accuses women who have abortions of taking a life. It does not regard actively sexual men or women who are unmarried as full members but as mortal sinners which is even worse than the Presbyterians treating lgbt as second class and not full members. It sees gay marriage as coupling. Yet the NUI will not distance itself from the Pontifical University in Maynooth.
After the Presbyterian Church refused to give full membership to active lgbt Queen's University rightly decided to contemplate distancing itself from the Church's seminary. Queens said: "In light of a number of developments in recent weeks, the university is taking active steps to review the nature of its relationship with Union Theological College and several options are currently under consideration." Maynooth next please? Let the campaign begin...

  5. Pat, In yesterday's blog you had a piece on Meath Diocese which you slipped in at the end. It was hidden under the main (international) story. When we in Lourdes recently we met Cardinal Brady who was excellent with the sick people and had time to chat with us. He invited a few of us who helped the sick for a little coffee to his hotel which was a very kind and warm gesture insisting that he would pay the bill. He didn’t have to do this but we felt special he had chosen our little group to have coffee with. I think people misjudge our bishops and treat them unfair and can be nasty to them.

He continued to let Brendan Smyth sexually abuse innocent people who suffered mentally, an physically tortured by Smyth. So if you call that nasty what people say what does that tell you about
Sean Brady. Shame on him to have carried on with his ministry. Cover up after cover up. Should never been made a Bishop, or Cardinal. Bloody Disgrace.
