CLOSURE OF BELFAST SEMINARY - SCENE OF GAY SEX/ABUSE

CATHOLIC HERALD

The 185-year-old St Malachy's seminary opened just four years after Catholic Emancipation
St Malachy’s Seminary, the only Catholic seminary in Northern Ireland, is to close in September, Church authorities have announced.

The Diocese of Down and Connor said it took the decision after Queen’s University Belfast – where seminarians study for their degrees – closed its Department of Scholastic Philosophy and progressively withdrew modules in the subject. This placed a “great strain on the required philosophical training of clerical students”, the diocese said.
From September this year, all seminarians will be relocated elsewhere to continue their training.
Bishop William Crolly founded the seminary in 1833, just four years after Catholic Emancipation.
“The closure of the diocesan seminary is a sad moment for all, not least for all those who have worked closely alongside the formation team and who have contributed immensely to the formation of the seminarians,” the diocese said.
“The diocese of Down and Connor is deeply indebted to all those who have contributed to St Malachy’s Seminary over the years. In particular, it thanks to the current formation team under the direction of Fr Michael Spence, the Rector of the Seminary.
“The diocese also recognizes the huge contribution of diocesan priests and the Jesuit Community in Belfast who, over the years, have shared their insight, expertise and provided ongoing spiritual direction and assisted with human development programmes for the seminarians.”

THE GAY SEX SCENE AT SAINT MALACHY'S SEMINARY

Like so many RC seminaries in the world St. Malachy's Seminary in Belfast saw its fair share of gay sex and at least on one occasion the sexual abuse of a seminarian by a senior parish priest of Down and Connor.

Until a few years ago St. Malachy's Seminary moved from the grounds of St. Malachy's College in Belfast to the site of the Poor Clare Convent which had closed.

Again, Noel Treanor, the spendthrift bishop of Down and Connor spent an unknown amount of money to refit the seminary.

Now, 4 years later, all that money is wasted as the seminary is now being closed.

When the seminary was located in St. Malachy's College several of the seminarians there had a very active gay lifestyle - cruising Belfast gay cruising grounds, visiting Belfast gay pubs and nightclubs and having sex with each other.

The most serious case we know of involves the sexual abuse of a seminarian by a senior parish priest of Down and Connor who got a long jail sentence for the abuse and is now out of the priesthood.

JAMES DONAGHY

PAT SAYS:

Father James Donaghy, the then parish priest of Bangor in County Down abused a seminarian who became known as "Victim A" in the course of the Donaghy trial.

Donaghy had befriended the young man when he was just 13 and had taken him to live in his presbytery with him on the excuse of "getting him ready for the priesthood".

Eventually, the young man entered St. Malachy's Seminary and the priest continued to abuse him in his seminary room.

Donaghy would come to St. Malachy's Seminary and lock the seminarian and himself into the room for hours at a time to abuse him. This priest's visits were noticed by the priests on the seminary staff and absolutely nothing was done about it.

Donaghy spent large sums of money on buying the seminarian designer clothes, designer aftershave, very high-grade computers and laptops and lavished 5* holidays and hotel breaks on the seminarian.

On behalf of Victim A's family, I contacted the then bishop - Paddy Walsh - and told him about the abuse.

WALSH

It took Walsh TEN YEARS to act - and only when the police became involved.

Victim A has been very badly damaged by his abuse of many years. I do not know if he will ever fully recover?

I wonder how many more sad secrets are there concerning the seminary that is now closing after 185 years?

ANOTHER BISHOP WHO ABUSED SEMINARIANS

He Preyed on Men Who Wanted to Be Priests. Then He Became a Cardinal.

Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of Honduran Bishop Accused of Sexual Abuse
PINEDA FASQUELLE WITH SEMINARIANS

Bishop Juan Jose Pineda Fasquelle was at the center of allegations involving abuse of seminarians and financial misconduct.

Pope Francis today accepted the resignation of Bishop Juan Jose Pineda Fasquelle, the auxiliary bishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The bishop was at the center of allegations of sexual abuse and financial misconduct in the archdiocese which led to an apostolic visit in May 2017 at the Pope’s request.

The Honduran prelate was a protégé of Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodriguez Maradiaga, the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, and in recent months had been left in charge of the archdiocese in the cardinal’s absence.

Cardinal Maradiaga is the coordinator of the C9 Group of Cardinals advising the Holy Father on Church reform.

In March, the Register obtained testimonies from two former seminarians detailing allegations of sexual misconduct by the bishop.  The two men and others feared reprisals from the prelate for speaking out.

As well as the abuse, Bishop Pineda, 57, was also reported to have a string of intimate male friends in Honduras and abroad whom he treated with gifts.

Fasquelle

The bishop was also accused of financial misconduct including misuse of $1.3 million from the Honduran government earmarked for charitable projects but which “completely disappeared.”
A source with knowledge of the case told the Register July 20 that “we’ve been waiting for this day in Honduras.”

Today’s announcement means “those who have suffered obtain partial justice; the Church has taken steps on the path of truth,” the source added.

But he lamented that Bishop Pineda remains a bishop and that the hierarchy “keeps covering for these abusers.”

Backing reports also obtained from other sources, he said Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga was “aware of everything but always sided with Pineda and not the truth” and that the institutions meant to deal with these cases, such as the apostolic nunciature, “were overridden.”

Over the past few months the Register contacted Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga and Bishop Pineda, offering both the opportunity to deny these allegations, but neither responded to our enquiries.

“The positive thing,” the source said, “is that something is moving.”
***
Update: July 20, 1.10pm CET
In a statement issued today, Bishop Pineda said he had handed the Pope his resignation “several months ago,” adding that he had “tried with all my heart” to serve the “People of God” placed under his charge.

“If I succeeded, blessed be God,” he said. “If I failed you, I apologize.”

      Delete
    5. No balance exists. If you are advocating Seminaries of old such as in Ireland which resembled prisons and damaged people more fool you. If you met any product of a Society of St Pius X Seminary you will then realise how exactly they are run - not well as you’ve suggested. Programmed devoid of feelings they are.

      Delete
    6. Agreed.

And this balance might be achievable were it not for the clerical Christ betrayers who have sole responsibility for the organisation and management of seminaries.

It is still idiomatically said of incompetents that they couldn't be trusted to organise a piss-up in a brewery. The institutional Roman Catholic Church couldn't be trusted even to betray Christ with as much as a modicum of aplomb, despite its being perpetually inclined to this evil purpose.

George Orwell, in Animal Farm, wrote of the potential for control and dominance of a small boy by a shire horse, if ONLY the horse knew its massive strength, as the boy whipped it along a path.

The same can be said of non-clerics in the Roman Catholic Church. They, too, have massive strength, sufficient to bring the priest-parasites into line, to end the evil that is committed by them...if ONLY these people knew their collective strength for good.

Orwell's shire horse has an excuse for failing to act against his cruel human handler: his very animality. But those in the Roman Catholic Church who know very well the corruptive behaviour of the institution and, yet, who continue to fund it will be held to account for their inaction. For they, unlike that shire horse, have the ability to reflect on their actions and the consequences of them. The ability to learn lessons.

    12. Pat, it’s a total nonsense to claim that all seminaries are places where abuse is rife.

Of course and obviously, there are very serious problems with Maynooth - both staff and students - and have been with other Irish seminaries now closed.

The hierarchy’s inertia and stupefaction, it’s failure, refusal, inability, to sort the mess out, is astounding.

Nevertheless, your blanket generalisations do the truth no service. You are showing yourself incapable of balanced judgement and fair assessment.

And as for Screaming Lord Sutch at 11:19, 12:08, etc., that bird is totally off her trolly.

There’s no reasoning with such hysteria and, even though Screaming Lord Sutch butts in and chimes in - left, right and centre - your readers are best advised not to engage.

Other thing militating against PP going to Knockninny is that he would be less than 15 minutes from home. Developments are awaited with growing interest.

What was observed was the man was caught on awares and if you fully knew him you would have realised he was extremely short of breath. Mentioning Eamon Martin four times seemed obsessive and odd. If Eamon Martin does not do No Shows according to you then perhaps you can explain his No Show for Confirmation in Cookstown parish recently. GOD BLESS WMOF, ALL ORGANISERS AND POPE FRANCIS. MAY ALL BEGRUDGERS HAVE A TRUE RENEWAL IN THEIR HEARTS.

    1. Would those security and safety issues you talk about be in case they get molested by a priest or raped by the Maynooth gang. I hope popes visit passes your expectations. Dont think it will.

    2. 21.58 sincere comments from you towards the World Meeting of the Family.
The Holy Father is NOT coming on a Pastoral visit He is attending the WMOF which I think happens every four years and Ireland was chosen for 2018.

The people are coming from all over the World to this Celebration and many of the media will be covering it World wide.
Also the events in all Cathedrals will have a celebration the night before in Armagh it is start at Shamble Market then on to the Cathedral
It will be a fantastic time and hopefully a renewal for Ireland.

  21. 21:58 'Many thousands more would attend only for security...'.

How the hell do you know this? The truth is that you DON'T know this, so you offer mere surmise (in reality, wishful thinking) as proof. But you should know that nothing proves itself. So what are you, then, but a liar.😆

  23. 22.25: Magna the hater, since you're not interested in TRUTH but vitriol, poison and venom, the answer to your question is to be found in my 21.58 comment. TRUTH IS TRUTH and I know. Ask WMOF organisers but don't get too full of rage and anger over something that's none if your business. Since you speak the language of HATE the WMOF organisation prefers LOVE, COMPASSION, MERCY..So off with you to your slug cave....
