PROPHETS AND PROPHET'S ENEMIES

Raymond Hunthausen, the consummate 'Vatican II bishop,' dies at 96
So-called Catholic liberals lionized him while traditionalists bemoaned him as the epitome of a 'wishy-washy' type of Catholicism

Robert Mickens, Rome
Vatican City

No prophet is welcomed in his own country…
And Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen experienced that in two countries, actually – the United States (his place of birth) and the Roman Catholic Church (his spiritual home).
Raymond Gerhardt Hunthausen, who died on Sunday in his native Montana, earned the prophet’s reward (or curse) because of his radical Gospel stance of inclusivity and non-violence.
He was just one month shy of his 97th birthday.
Hunthausen was best known from his time as Archbishop of Seattle (1975-1991), a period that was marked by dramatic ecclesial and political changes around the world.
Commonly known as “Dutch” by friends and colleagues, he was the last surviving U.S. bishop to attend the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). In fact, he attended all four sessions of that monumental gathering, having been appointed Bishop of Helena (Montana) in the summer before the council got underway.
Just 40 years old, he was the youngest American bishop at the time and the last ever to be appointed in the pre-Vatican II era.
He would say that attending Vatican Council II changed him, calling the experience “liberating… challenging and exciting.”
It was, he said, “a grace and a blessing.” By the time he was Archbishop of Seattle, his name had become synonymous with the council, especially as Pope John Paul II began curtailing the great synod’s reforms.
So-called Catholic liberals in the United States lionized Hunthausen as the pre-eminent “Vatican II bishop,” while traditionalists bemoaned him as the epitome of a “wishy-washy” type of Catholicism they believed the council had produced.
As John Paul began to reshape the U.S. hierarchy by appointing more doctrinally rigid bishops to major dioceses, Hunthausen came increasingly under pressure from church conservatives for offering the sacraments to divorced and remarried Catholics, welcoming gays and lesbians in his cathedral, allowing general absolution and promoting greater ecumenical and interfaith collaboration.
And during the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the height of the Cold War, it was his pacifism and staunch resistance to nuclear weapons that drew the ire of the Republican leaders in the U.S. capital.
The archbishop joined protests in the early 1980s when the first Trident nuclear submarine arrived in Puget Sound just 20 miles from downtown Seattle. He became a cause célèbre when he announced he would withhold half of his federal income tax until the nukes were removed.
Reagan appealed to other more conservative American cardinals and officials at the Vatican to lean on the Seattle archbishop. It is believed the U.S. president’s interventions actually helped convince John Paul that Hunthausen needed to be reined in.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, drew up “charges” in 1985 that accused the archbishop of deviating from the Catholic faith.
Shortly afterward the pope appointed a Pittsburgh priest named Donald Wuerl as the archbishop’s auxiliary bishop, secretly giving the newly ordained prelate special powers over several areas of pastoral governance in Seattle.

But Hunthausen was no pushover. He became resolute when he perceived Bishop Wuerl had overstepped his mandate and threatened to publicly disclose the full details of the Vatican’s arrangement to curtail his authority. The archbishop prevailed.
“Wuerl was like a boy who had been sent to do a man’s job,” the late Bishop James Hoffman of Toledo (Ohio) once told me. Dutch was still the archbishop and he knew his rights.
In the end, a compromise had to be worked out. Wuerl was sent back to Pittsburgh less than a year and half after he began his Vatican-backed mission. He served briefly as seminary rector before taking over as the Bishop of Pittsburgh in early 1988.
Meanwhile, Hunthausen was saddled with a coadjutor bishop and finally stepped down in 1991 at age 70, five years prior to the normal retirement age.
I met Archbishop Hunthausen only once. It was in the midst of the Vatican’s attempted takeover of his archdiocese and he had come to give a talk to faculty and staff at St. Meinrad College.
He spoke mostly of his conviction that peaceful resistance was the only Christian response to war. He was unwaveringly anti-war and anti-nukes.
Afterwards in the question and answer period some of the students pilloried him for being naïve. He only smiled, patiently withstanding the barrage.
He had put up with much more from people with greater authority in the church, those who should have shown gratitude for the work he did for humanity and all believers.
Indeed, Raymond Hunthausen was a prophet. May he rest in peace and may others carry forward his legacy.

 PAT SAYS:

I had the great pleasure of having a long telephone conversation with Archbishop Hunthausen one evening when he was being persecuted by the Vatican and others.

I rang him to give my support and the promise of my prayers.

He warned me to be careful about what I said because his telephone line was being listened to.

At 97 he has gone to his reward.

His prophecy will be gloriously rewarded.

THE IRISH PROBLEM

One gets the impression that sexuality activity among priests is more common in some diocese more than others.

Armagh is in the First League.

As in Meath - and now they are getting Uncle Tom - not Uncle Ted :-)

Plenty of stories from Dublin, Cork, Cloyne, Kerry, and Galway too.

BISHOPS:

Are bishops involved?

I have heard credible stories about three currently serving Irish bishops.

The story is getting bigger and bigger.

Let readers keep us informed.

ARMAGH IS THE ONE TO WATCH THESE DAYS.

  1. Your Holiness,

You present well. I remarked to an old Australian priest visiting Dublin a few years ago that I liked the sounds coming from Rome. He whispered across the table "its too late." In our world I think he is right.

I am aware of a priest in your home diocese won publicly spoke against you shortly after your election. I know by Canon Law, a censure is incurred in doing that....bon homie in public, ruthless in private.

Holy Father, perhaps you should see that he is restored to full ministry if the sound still coming out of Rome are real.

  2. Father Sean Quinn, Togher. He should be immediately be dismissed from ministry. He is protected by the Church. There is a major cover up by The Gardai and The Archdiocese in this case. I am very familiar with a particular case of a devastated life, so is the Archdiocese and An Garda Siochana. It is the usual Irish story of protection of a wider story. Blackrock is my home village.

  6. Raymond Hunthausen was a true, genuine servant of Christ, able to incorporate the teachings of the Church against the light of the gospel. He was a true PROPHET in line with the Old Testament vision and embracing Christ's mind and heart in fullness. This made him a remarkable person. To be prophetic is a calling for all who follow Christ in that we must always confront abuse of power, privilege, authority, corruption, oppression, injustices and all that dehumanises us. While we must courageously name the powers of sin, corruption, hypocrisy and wrongdoing, shouldn't we also be careful about personal judgments we make where we consign "sinners" to the dustbin and feel we must crush them to pieces. I believe we must, as Christians, imitate Christ and if so, do we have the final say on any one person? There is too much speculative hearsay on this blog encouraging vindictive comments. Sometimes guys are using this blog to score points at those who may have wronged them and suggesting behaviours and actions which may be untrue.

The master of this servant is angry that his example was not followed and withdraws his mercy measuring out punishment greater than his initial sentence.
I left F'bro Abbey believing Cuthbert Brogan was a good man who had made a mistake but because he wanted to stay, as his friend, I should do all I could to assist him. When I returned for a visit 6 years later he introduced me, alone, just the three of us, to a young man he said had been a choir boy in the Abbey's men & boy's choir. I was not comfortable with the meeting and not sure of it's purpose or why it had to be alone and not in the church hall where most others were after mass. It was the I vowed to myself if I ever heard a sniff of a minor being hurt, I would come forward with my story. (I still hadn't fully comprehended how he had hurt me and therefore potentially other young people and adults) Not long after that visit I was contacted by a woman connected with the men & boy's choir looking for some information to take to the bishop (Crispian Hollis?) on Cuthbert that might be used against him, that might help save the choir who Cuthbert (and the community?) were intent on dissmissing. She asked was Cuthbert gay? I said I was and that was why I left but I couldn't speak for Cuthbert. I also said that decisions about the abbey were for the community. I'm sure from what I remember that she was dissapointed. On hanging up I phoned Magnus Wilson, then prior and informed him. He was thankful and some time later Cuthbert called me from Italy. I have little recollection of that, friendliness, gratitude, I think. I made the decision that it was too risky for Cuthbert to have me hanging around and frequently visiting and so I made no further contact till I friended him on facebook some 18 years later! He seemed rather reticent and I was increasingly gobsmacked at this liberal turned arch conservative. None of the community from my time, stories of bullying and the final penny drop of what happened to me.
Cuthbert, it appears, has consigned many to the dustbin. If I had returned to find him penitent, hospitable and the beloved father in Christ to his community, practicing in charity and humility, if he had apologised, I would have been content and lived with it, gladly. Finding as I have, I now demand that he should not gain in either prestige or possession and should live a life of prayer and penance in a foreign house, including house arrest if he should be found to have acted criminally and be convicted (though the law might prescribe otherwise)
I don't believe in crushing someone to pieces either. Christ said it would be better (not that it should happen, rather a person should heed the gravity) if a millstone were tied around the neck of them who caused the little ones to stumble, and they be thrown in the sea! It takes wisdom to know when "Turning The Other Cheek" is an act of sacrifice and when it is an act of passive resistance. You neither help yourself, the perpetrator or the rest of the world by becoming a doormat. Injustice must be made visible!

Who will rush to his defence then - nobody - because he will become a nobody. Take it from someone who has trod the same path. Ignominy - that's where it all leads.

  51. Bill I am not worried as everyone sees you with a mental health problem and I hope you get help.

The Ordination right and again at the Mass of Chrism you take the vow to obey the current Bishop or his successor and I am stunned you have not be invited to Ara Coeli as you need help or maybe the Archbishop will visit you.
Everyone is safe till Pope Francis leaves then the bullets will fire up it is only a few weeks away.
Bill please get help and sort your differences with Our Archbishops.

That's twice you have threatened people this week be careful.

  53. I have just received an email about my personal safety. I can assure you i am worried about it. Last weekend , the Archbishop of Dublin rang my land line three times in a distressed state , this is the number he left: 086 8260375.
If anything happens me, the Roman Catholic Church decided to finally shut me up....keep digging.

There are a lot of crackpots who use email for all kinds of things.

    8. Call the Gardai and get Bill taken to Our Lady of Lourdes. We will then get a statement that Bill was sorry for his actions, didn't intend to hurt both Archbishops and regrets what he did. He was used and manipulate by a nasty associate. Then next thing you know - Bill c/o Ara Coeli.

    9. I see no signs that Bill needs taken to Lourdes by Gardai.

He needs to be LISTENED TO and BELIEVED.

    2. Lovely response. Two peas in a pod, Bill n Pat.
Regardless of how Armagh is being handled, the scandles throughout Ireland and the world, you two are not going to solve it.
By your awful talk, it's evident you are not on a spiritual level with Him who you say, lip service, and were ordained to carry on His ministry.
Go check my IP address, I don't care, what I care about is TRUE ministry, not back slapping, vainglory which you both seem to hate but are so much enjoying.
Bishops against bishops, fathers against sons, confusion. Signs of the times to which you are dancing.

  65. This Bill Mulvihill reminds me of Matthew Despard and look at him in total melt down.

It did not take Bishop Joe Toal long to suspend him but it has taken years to resolve.

So why is Archbishop Eamon Martin not suspending Bill Mulvihill and getting the help he needs.

The Archbishop has a duty of care to both Bill Mulvihill and the parishioners of his parish.

    1. It certainly is a very serious situation indeed. The lack of any response is bewildering. From the accused former PP? From the archbishops? Accusations of the most serious nature have been levelled. One would think that some response would be quickly forthcoming.
