A SOURCE HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE BLOG AND CLAIMED THAT THERE ARE TWO INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ARMAGH.

One investigation is being undertaken by Eamon Martin after he was approached by a journalistic investigative team.

The other investigation is being undertaken by the journalistic team itself and has been ongoing for some months.

This team, it is claimed, has already interviewed Eamon Martin and are due to interview him soon again.

They claim that they have already interviewed some priests and senior and influential lay people.

They have promised me some more information soon.

I will bring it to you when I get it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEPARATE ISSUE

The above investigations are totally separate from a more serious case into a senior priest in the context of safeguarding and historical matters.

I'm reliably told from inside Armagh that Eamon is in very bad form these days as he waits for several bombs to explode.

Change the clerical culture

Why Is predatory behavior by priests permitted?

Emerging details about the scope and duration of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s sexually abusive behavior once more underscore the fact that an institutional sickness afflicts the Catholic Church.
A predator priest can ascend to princely rank only if the clerical culture around him enables those who are complicit by their silence and failure to act.
The behavior of “Uncle Ted,” as the cardinal insisted he be called by his preferred victims, was something of an open secret at elite levels of the church.
As the New YorkTimes noted, multiple reports about McCarrick’s sexual encounters with seminary students were made between 1994 and 2008—to American bishops, to the pope’s representative in Washington, and even to Pope Benedict XVI.
Two dioceses secretly made settlement payments to alleged victims.
This didn’t slow a swift rise: McCarrick became a global ambassador dispatched to conflict zones, a prolific fundraiser, and the honoree of numerous Catholic institutions eager to present him with awards. He even played a prominent role as a spokesperson for the church’s “zero-tolerance” policy on sexual abuse.
The causes of clerical abuse are complex and multilayered. But that hasn’t stopped some Catholic conservatives and others on the right from zeroing in on a predictable target: gay priests.
As First Things senior editor Matthew Schmitz recently tweeted: “It will be impossible to address sexual abuse in the Church if bishops and priests do not clearly affirm the Church’s teaching on sex, including same-sex activity. Treating affirmations of that teaching as uncivil, unhelpful, or distracting risks making things worse.”
And then there was this from Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog): “The pedophile scandal in the Catholic Church is not a pedophile scandal. The vast majority of victims are post-pubescent teens and young men. The real problem in the Church that everyone sees and few will say out loud: gay priests.”
This is an agenda in search of facts. A 300-page report, prepared by researchers at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the request of the U.S. bishops seven years ago, found no statistical evidence that gay priests were more likely to abuse minors.
What’s more, researchers found that the uptick in the number of gay priests from the late 1970s corresponded with “a decreased incidence of abuse-not an increased incidence of abuse.”
The disproportionate number of adolescent male victims, according to the report, was linked to opportunity, not to preference or pathology.
A witch-hunt mentality demonizes the vast majority of celibate gay men who are faithful to their vows, serve the church, and are as horrified as anyone at the abuses committed.
The need to reject stereotypes and call out homophobia doesn’t mean that all discussion about homosexuality in the priesthood is off the table. As veteran Vatican observer Robert Mickens recently argued in the Washington Post, the closet is part of the problem:
There is no denying that homosexuality is a key component to the clergy sex abuse (and now sexual harassment) crisis. With such a high percentage of priests with a homosexual orientation, this should not be surprising.
But let me be very clear: psychologically healthy gay men do not rape boys or force themselves on other men over whom they wield some measure of power or authority. However, we are not talking about men who are psychosexually mature.
And yet the bishops and officials at the Vatican refuse to acknowledge this. Rather, they are perpetuating the problem, and even making it worse, with policies that actually punish seminarians and priests who seek to deal openly, honestly and healthily with their sexual orientation.
If the church removed all gay priests from ministry today, it would suffer for that loss. Nor would it bring an end to the abuse crisis.
The problem is with those bishops, and others with influence in the church, who at best are asleep at the wheel and at worst willing to excuse predatory behavior.
Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley this week acknowledged a “major gap” in procedures for how the church deals with a bishop or cardinal accused of abuse, and called for specific new steps.
“Failure to take these actions will threaten and endanger the already weakened moral authority of the Church and can destroy the trust required for the Church to minister to Catholics and have a meaningful role in the wider civil society,” he said.
There were plenty of red flags about McCarrick, more than enough to stop his ascent into the College of Cardinals. That it was nevertheless allowed to proceed is an institutional failure on a massive scale. No scapegoating will make this mess go away.
And no single step — ending celibacy requirements or allowing priest to marry — will serve as a panacea.
The significant spike in abuse cases in the 1960s and 1970s, the John Jay researchers found, had much to do with psychologically unhealthy priests who were not properly screened, and who became clergy at a time when seminary education lacked a focus on psychological-emotional development.
Improved seminary training and education in the 1980s, according to the report, contributed to a “sharp and sustained decline” in abuse cases since then.
This suggests the need for continued, practical work on this front. More important is changing a clerical culture that prizes secrecy and loyalty over truth and transparency.
That will be tedious, challenging and essential work. In the ongoing wake of the McCarrick scandal, it’s time to take up that task with greater urgency than ever.

  2. On the subject of (Cardinal) McCarrick / Uncle Ted - two observations:

    1. Surely senior people in the Church knew about his proclivities / behaviour ? How in God's name did he continue to be advanced to very senior positions ? The various Papal Nuncios in the US should be held accountable for their lack of intelligence, or failure to act on what they knew. Questions should have been asked. Why were they not asked ? Why was he advanced ? I don't buy the theory that he had / has dirt on people. I just think the senior people in the Church are easily fooled. They just do not believe / understand / appreciate how deceptive and convincing are abusers, and they are taken in. McCormick was very competent. plausible and convincing. But, they should have done their homework before advancing him. And, he, McCarrick, should not have allowed himself to be advanced. I guess he is in denial and has been for decades. There are serious questions to be asked about the Church's processes for looking in to personnel issues when advancing people to senior positions.

    2. In my country, even at his advanced age, McCarrick would be facing the full rigour of the law for abusive actions with underage minors. There is no statute of limitations. Just a year or so ago, a 100 year old man was imprisoned for 7 years for crimes committed 60 years ago. His 100th birthday appeared in the local press and people in their 60s remembered what he had done to them when he was younger, the police took on the case, and he was tried and found guilty. He will no doubt die in prison. But the message is clear: there is no statute of limitations on horrendous abusive behavior and crimes committed even decades ago. McCormick should think himself fortunate that the will spend out his days in a comfortable place of prayer and penance, rather than in a prison, which he would be doing if he lived in my country.

    4. Pat, do you perform dog funerals. a few years ago one of our neighbors dog died, they had him for 12 years. They laid him out in the living room in his little coffin and they had a plate made with his name on the coffin etc. next day they held a service in the house. I think they performed it themselves, and the dog was buried in their garden in a sort of vault thing which they had made.

  55. Something is not right about the Blackrock, Co. Louth situation. If this blog is correct, a former curate might have questions to answer about abuse allegations. This former curate is now a retired priest. How come this is only coming to light now? These events would have occurred during Tom Fee's time. Did he know about them? Did Cahal Daly know anything? It's difficult to believe he didn't. After all, he brought down a government over Smyth. Surely, he did an audit of Armagh when he arrived there? Fee and Daly are dead, but Sean Baptist Brady is still alive and kicking. Did he know anything about Blackrock? Could we not ask him a few wee questions? Maybe he is the one to go to prison and glorious martyrdom. He could even follow in the footsteps of McCarrick! Why is poor Eamon Martin having to wade through this crap, none of it of his making?

    ReplyDelete
  56. So there are two investigations ongoing in Armagh and another serious accusation that there are questions to be answered about events in Blackrock, Co Louth. While these cases are linked (culture of cover-up and culture of entitlement) they are also separate. Eamon M. can deal with Blackrock, but it's going to be very difficult for him to do anything much about the less serious problem, ie priests with partners and priests sleeping around. That one is bigger than Armagh, although it seems to be particularly bad in Armagh. Or else, Armagh is just leeking badly right now, while other dioceses look on and thank their lucky stars that they don't have such leaks to the Buckley blog.

  64. The tittle tattle of who led who into the naked party at whatever sauna in Prague or any other city isn't the core of the problem here.
There have always been gay priests and seminarians since the dawn of time. Go read Peter Damian in the 11th century writing about the problems in central Italy, especially among the monks.
In the past, it seems a greater effort was made to keep it in one's pants. Some of those efforts resulted in hideous side effects - alcoholism, depression, psychosis, probably even some of the abuse.
What appears to be novel about the current younger clergy is their brazenness. They seem cock sure of themselves and utterly confident in their cruising habits. Some years ago I would never have believed that a seminarian seeking ordination would be prepared to 'blackmail' his ordinary in return for ordination. Now, I'm not so sure. There's evidence of one case in Armagh and possibly more elsewhere. Did Michael Byrne have his hand on Diarmuid Martin's backside in that infamous photo taken in a sacristy in Bray (?). A previous generation of seminarians would not have had that confidence, never mind even the confidence to be out publically, let alone trade sex with a superior for sacramental reward! This new generation of gay seminarian appears to believe itself immune to criticism, immune to judgement, and immune to any type of accountability.

    ReplyDelete
  65. And it's no accident that many of those belonging to that new generation are also nostalgic for the olden days when Father was Father and everyone knew her (usually) place. That's where Frankie the Argentine is correct - clericalism is a real evil - because it legitimises love of power and control, lack of accountability, and creates a whole culture of entitlement, where the Gospel soon becomes a empty hollow reference point.

    1. 16.02 It has also created a culture of dependency. I have been told, by a parishioner, that Catholics are not allowed to read spiritual books or meditate. I honestly don't know what is going to happen to them in the future. The present priest is from India and no-one one can understand his accent.

      Delete
  66. Chasing out all the gay priests is not the answer either. They exist and have always existed. There wouldn't be many priests left if all the gay (many of them excellent priests) men were chucked out.
The other elephants in the room are compulsory celibacy and Catholic attitudes to gay marriage.
Now wouldn't that be revolutionary, to have Father and his husband living in Cookstown, Loughgall or wherever - all above board - rather than the subject of snide local gossip as is the case now.
Celibacy is not working. That much is clear. Very few human beings are cut out to be celibate. And maybe we need to be more tolerant of those who fall and pick themselves up again. But for those who just give the two fingers to the idea and still take promises of celibacy that's another matter. If a promise is not a promise and their word is not their word, how can you ever really trust such people. I think that's what much of the anger on this blog is about. It's not about being gay per se. It's about hypocrisy and lack of integrity.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Another thing that is clear is that seminaries have had their day. Train priests in theology and other matters in proper theological faculties. Do the spiritual training and all the rest under the guidance of one or a few wise priests based in the diocese, but that means being resident with those guys day in day out for several years. So that they get to know the candidate, are able to help him, and are truly able to make a judgement about his suitability at the end of the process. In other words, bishops need to take back responsibility at local level and make arrangements at local level.Ireland isnt too big for someone to study in Dublin, Belfast or Cork several days a week and be back in a house of 'Formation' (that horrible word) at weekends and during holidays.
Look, the rest has failed. It's worth a try. It might make a difference, resulting in more grounded, humane, emotionally mature and integrated priests. They would still have the link and experience of the wider church through theological education and other education at national and even international level.
How many Irish bishops are ready to take direct responsibility for their seminarians however? How many bishops have a few good men they would be prepared to assign to these tasks in a diocese? Why not close Maynooth and integrate the Theology, Canon Law and Philosophy faculties into Maynooth University as a Faculty of Theology. This can be done under the current universities legislation - the ban on theology in the NUI is gone.

  69. Celibacy as defined by the Roman Church is a pathology. Human beings were not defined to be on their own. If a man or a woman get to a certain age without a sexual experience with another man or woman, there is in fact something wrong with them. Virginity for Mary was not for her virtue but because she was something despised, no man wanted her. a long tale. There is much today about a married clergy . It is necessary. The Church will not recover in the western world until we have a married presbyterate and the ordination of women. There are some ahead of us all, they have discovered happiness in each other. They, for the love they have, are much more rounded human beings. They are not out to do harm, it is just how life has unfolded. I am not sure the sacrifice of their reputations for a Puritan Jansenist culture serves any good. If their humanity has blossomed, leave them alone. Call it sin if you like, accorded the right to every Human Being by God.... or perhaps they are ahead of what we have yet to understand....only kindness and understanding bring us near to God who knows us all as we are and love us there.... be careful of crushing the gentle reed....

    ReplyDelete

    1. All well said, but you're a bit nieve regarding married priesthood. There are two plus in that scenario and limits on ministry because of duty to spouse and children.
You have an enviable position to give your whole being in the service of others.
This is not so with married Anglican clergy or now Irish Catholic Deacons.
Fr Bill you still are a product of your formation whereby you have forgotten and cannot comprehend the needs of family. But this is inherint in the church.

  77. Whether priests or seminarians are gay or not is a red herring. The utterly dysfunctional situation we are in derives on the one hand from public denial of homosexuality and on the other a secret world in which it is very much practised. So when characters such as BXVI and Old Mother Burke blame gays in the seminaries, they are not solving but compounding a problem which could even involve men such as themselves. Shock, horror! It’s universal: remember the Sankt Pölten seminary scandal under the archconservative and defender of Cardinal Groer, Bp Kurt Krenn? But what REALLY gets my goat is the Church’s shameless assumption of the moral highground such as when the clergy organize a summit on the family, as if they were its guardians. These appalling vicious and dishonest men actually go public to pronounce on who belongs and who doesn’t. Every so often the Catholic Herald ( forget Athens - the Daily Mail of English Catholicism ) publishes a list of supposedly heroic priests of peerless integrity who dare to oppose the prevailing current concerning say gay marriage and admittance of divorced people to communion: Never! Never! The most recent was to express support for Humanae Vitae by a crew for whom contraception is unlikely to have ever been an issue. Leaving the Athens of English Catholicism out of it, a few other Benedictines leap off the page. Coming down heavily on condoms is the Rt Rev Mark Hargreaves ( yes, that’s how he styles himself, possibly thinking that by now the spot of bother at Prinknash some years back has been forgotten ). Then styling himself a mere Very Rev is Leo Chamberlain under whose regime as Headmaster of Ampleforth abuse was so rampant that the UK Secretary of State for Education is now threatening to close the whole f*****g place down. Also proudly adding his signature, though modestly and uncharacteristically eschewing his abbatial dignity, is our old friend Dom Cuthbert Brogan. Perhaps Tom Wood can assure us there was never a problem with contraception at Farnborough in his day. Phew, that’s a relief! No women in the rooms!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rest assured Cuthbert doesn't do women in any shape or form, so contraception was at no time likely to be an issue for him. He also spent years angling for the abbacy. 'I'm the man for the job' he used to say. His ambition and lack of insight into what a sh*t he is are incredible.
In an almost unprecedented recommendation, when he was a novice a visitation advised the community to dismiss him. Thomas had the integrity and good sense to leave, and a community which wasn't at war with itself would have got rid of Cuthbert.
But the young and liberal Cuthbert sided with that side of the community before abruptly changing direction when it suited him and pushing Fr Michael Fava out.
Nobody should join, or even visit, Farnborough. The original plan was to let Farnborough fizzle out so that the Alton monks would be the continuation of the Farnborough conventus. It should have been suppressed and had Cuthbert been dismissed as a novice, the problem of what to do with him wouldn't have arisen.

      Delete
    2. I was surprised not to see former Society Of St John priest Fr Dominic Carey or as he's now known as a Farnborough monk "Dom Gregory Carey" also a signatory. Maybe he's not allowed while in simple vows, mind you that didn't stop him being videoed chanting for the Christus Imperat facebook page in France at Abbaye du Thoronet. Perhaps he was on holiday or perhaps, given that he was the SSJ's chief fundraiser, he was soliciting funds for apparently cash strapped F'bro? Or could the community be about to relocate? Traditional Orders are doing well in France haven't I heard and read?

However, I see some missing from the list. The ones I speak of aren't all sexual deviants (or at least that's not what I know), but they are scandalous. Armagh Archdiocese by the way.

There's the Canon who is money mad!!! Baptism, wedding, funeral, handshake in the street - he's always looking money. And he's always so busy, there's no time for the people. More than likely, no time for God. What about his BEST FRIEND? That's all we hear about when he preaches.

There's the Adm who is a little too close with female parishioners. and yes, that's plural!

What about the PP of a Co. Tyrone Parish who says he'll leave if he is ever moved?

What about all of them?!?!?! I would be a staunch defender of Priests and the Church in general. But this all makes it rather difficult. I'm sorry, it's your JOB to serve people, not lounge around and do nothing.
