The Secrets of the French Church’s “Gay Expert”, Tony Anatrella
JULY 12, 2018 BY CAMERON DOODY

Monsignor Tony Anatrella was widely considered the official “gay expert” in the Vatican and the French Catholic Church. The priest, psychoanalyst and author of thirty books on same-sex attraction was the driving force behind the 2005 decree of the Congregation for Catholic Education that barred gays from becoming priests. A member of the Medjugorje commission of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, and a consultor to two Pontifical Councils – for the Family and for Health Care Ministry – the man known in Paris as the “Church’s shrink” taught that homosexuals are narcissists who are incapable of forming long-term relationships. “You’re not gay, you just think that you are”, the psychoanalyst used to say to the dozens of seminarians sent to him during three decades from all over France to “cure” their homosexuality. Anatrella was even asked to cross over into the realm of child protection, giving a course in Rome in 2015 to newly-appointed bishops from all over the world on how to handle sexual abuse, in which he told them there is no need to inform the civil authorities when a prelate hears about sexual abuse by one of his priests.
But all the while – or at least since 2006, when the first victims spoke publicly – everybody in the Vatican and in the French Church knew that Anatrella had been accused by several men of abusing them during special “physical therapy” sessions. His alleged victims accuse him of encouraging them to live out their homosexual fantasies during their one-on-one appointments. The sessions included orgasms and Monsignor Anatrella “only wore his socks” thoroughout them, one of the victims told the Dutch newspaper Nederlands Dagblad. “I know details about his body only someone who has seen him naked can know”, said this young man.

Anatrella’s secret finally came undone last week when the Archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit, finally suspended him from public ministry for abusing young men in his care. Aupetit’s predecessors, Cardinals Lustiger and Vingt-Trois, had publicly supported the priest and psychoanalyst, even after several victims complained to the archdiocese. Those were times in which the French society was dealing with the legalization of same-sex marriage. Anatrella was considered by the episcopate as an important voice in the debate, since he could speak on the topic as a respected psychoanalyst.
The French Dominican Philippe Lefèbvre was for years almost the only one who opposed the ideas of the influential monsignor. But now that the priest has fallen from his pedestal, Lefèbvre denounces the ecclesiastical culture that enabled this scandal to flourish.

The Dominican doesn’t mince words anymore. He says the way in which the Roman Catholic Church has dealt with Anatrella’s victims has been by nothing less than “mafia practices”. Lefèbvre, who teaches biblical studies in Fribourg (Switzerland), came in touch with Anatrella’s thinking by chance when he was working on a book about men and women in the Bible.
“At the beginning of 2006 I came across an article in which Anatrella writes about the inability of homosexuals to become priests. And I read his book on homosexuality with the title The Origins of Homosexuality and The Reign of Narcissus. I then wrote a critical response. Two French Catholic magazines refused to publish it. ‘You’re right, but we can’t afford to criticize Anatrella’, they said to me. Eventually my story ended up on a Catholic internet site. Among the numerous reactions I received, there was also a letter from a young man who endured Anatrella’s ‘physical therapies’. He had come to Anatrella to have his homosexual attraction healed”.
Was he the only victim that you have come to know?
No. A French priest who was involved in the pastoral care for homosexuals wrote to me and said he knew three men who had gone through the same thing. That priest started talking to seven bishops in November 2006. They weren’t surprised at all. Everyone knew about it! On November 23, 2006, Cardinal Vingt-Trois, the archbishop of Paris, wrote an e-mail to all his priests: “We support Monsignor Anatrella with our prayer and our esteem”.
I know four victims personally, but even more have written to me. At the end of 2006, when it came out that the French bishops had done nothing about it, I wrote a new article, in which I also mentioned Anatrella’s “physical therapy”.
Did you take risks?
The church gives these people an almost almighty status. And if you criticize them, you get the bishops coming down on you. Or the whole Catholic system of laymen that keeps all kinds of internet sites running. They are mafia practices that are accompanied even by intimidations. I know that Anatrella has tried everything to get me removed from my chair here at the faculty in Fribourg, even going to the highest Roman court. I also received phone calls from friends who told me that I was being portrayed as the “destroyer of the church” in Rome. A bishop told me that I had better stop, since my lectureship depends on the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome.
How can this support for Anatrella from the highest levels of the Church be explained?
Bishops are generally weak-willed. Someone who takes a firm position in the public debate about matters such as the family and homosexuality is therefore good for them. If you are scared yourself, you send in the dogs. And Anatrella said things that conservative Catholics like to hear. Many French priests and monks have also been in therapy with Anatrella, often  to cure their homosexual attraction. Some of them now have high positions in the church. Anatrella knows things, and people are afraid of him. But the victims have remained very worthy, brave and courageous. They haven’t got discouraged.
Why do you find this affair so significant?
Thinking differently – about the family, for example – has been made completely impossible by the current ecclesiastical structures. Either by ecclesiastical office-bearers, or by conservative laymen with their internet sites. In Iran we call that the revolutionary guard. The Ayatollahs have the power, but then there are the people who look after all the villages and families, and check, for example, if your wife’s headscarf is thick enough. The Roman Catholic Church has come to resemble that. The culture of discussion and dialogue has completely disappeared. We are in a Church of conformity with apparatchiks that maintain an institution. Jesus calls them “the dead who bury the dead”. Anatrella has held French Catholicism in his ideological grip for thirty years, while the bishops knew of his abuse. In the corridors several bishops said to me: “You’re right, but don’t say it was me who told you”.
The current Archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit, came out [and suspended Anatrella] very cleverly just before the summer holiday. After the summer we will have forgotten about it again.

But I hope Anatrella’s suspension is the beginning of a new reflection.

PAT SAYS

Here we have another high profile case whereby a cleric is condemning homosexuality and yet practising it himself.

Anatrella advised that homosexuals should not be allowed into priesthood - while he himself was abusing you  asked, apart from his socks.

We also see how we our church figures knew all about Anatrella and did  nothing about it.

They stayed quiet while the Monsignor continued to abuse.

Once again, sexual hypocrisy and criminal cover up.

TRALEE PARISHIONER OBJECTS TO SEAN JONES

A Tralee Parishioner has written to the blog to say that Sean Jones, King Puck, is becoming their curate on July 25th coming.

The parishioner is deeply unhappy at the curate they are getting.

He wrote - "I hate the thoughts of my elderly mother going to weekly Confession to him".

  1. To the moron who hates the idea of his Mother going to Confession to Fr Jones, cop yourself on. Firstly it's none of his business who his Mother goes to Confession to and secondly Fr Jones is not the only Priest in Tralee or nearby. She can go to another Priest. Simple! Can't believe the moron who wrote that and the bigger moron for publishing such utter rubbish.

    1. 22:38 Your anger is totally disproportionate. You're obviously a Mr Jones fan.

Quite frankly, I'd be deeply concerned if Mr Jones were counselling 😅 any young man sure or unsure of his sexuality, especially if he were good-looking.

I think we're going to hear more about Mr Jones eventually; he won't escape the dark cloud he's under.

    2. To be honest I'd be concerned about any priest conselling people about their sexuality. To live a celibate life is odd; and the clerical patterns of trying to, failing, self-rejection for failing and then repeating the pattern again (as displayed by multiple stories in the media) is even odder.

Celibacy, if successful, is the product of psychological adjustment - again causing a questionable basis for counselling.

      Priests should stick to religion.

As for Sean Jones... so far the church has handled the situation appallingly. But now that he is ordained let him have space. As Magna said we will hear more eventually - I'd rather hear the more when it arises than see the man continuously beaten with the same history again and again and again. Such relentless drum-banging will eventually be used as an excuse for what is already an inevitable downfall.

    3. o.h.l, in the meantime, Jones can do much harm to insecure, vulnerable, and impressionable young people.

Let's be blunt about this: Mr Jones himself is highly unsuited to priesthood, both psychologically and morally; he has, therefore, the potential to cause much harm to others. This is implicit in your post, where you mention his 'inevitable downfall'.

Giving Mr Jones 'space' is precisely what he wants, but not what he needs. And it certainly isn't what those at risk deserve.

    5. Dear Magna,

In many ways I agree with you... I do think the situation is now high risk. But with the evidence at Ray's disposal he has gambled the wellbeing of his laity. It is time for new evidence to accumulate so that the situation does not get outrageously out of hand.

In the meanwhile the Jones' actions and sins can accumulate on Ray Brown's soul.

You however, being unable to respond to the content of my objections have decided to respond with lies attacking me - which incidentially is against the teaching of the Roman Church (and even if you believe your own lies you should note that detraction is also against the teachings of the Roman Church you seek to defend)

  4. Anatrella's homophobic articles appeared in very respectable Catholic publications and he was trotted out as the very pillar of Catholic sexual wisdom both by the French bishops and by the Vatican. Many vulnerable young gays were traumatized by his writings. Then came the drip, drip of revelations about his actual behavior, which the hierarchy and the Vatican, unwilling to lose face, simply refused to countenance. Knowing how Anatrella irritated gays and liberals and gay-friendly clergy, they presumend that these reports were mere tittle-tattle. The sexual dynamics underlying their own behavior are not much better than Anatrella's own -- they are not naive, innocent pastors; their gullibility is perverse.

  5. And so it becomes clear as to why Hugh Connolly felt it appropriate to hide in Paris when McAreavey (rightly fearing high levels of media attention) refused his return to Dromore.

  6. Yes, it was a very naive comment for that parishioner to make. I should think it is up to his mother to make her own choice.

  7. So at least two (possibly more) popes (Benedict and Francis) knew of this pervert-abuser's behaviour...and did nothing. Not only that, but Benedict allowed this moral and professional fraud (many gay relationships are indeed long-lasting) to persuade him to bar men from seminary if they were gay.

And people wonder why I call the institutional Roman Catholic Church a 'w***e!'.😆

    1. Yes, they do. Some of them are neurotic. (God help them.)

What puzzles me is that people feel the need (or were scaremongered into feeling the need by the 'Church') to confess to a priest, any priest, regardless of his moral and psychological suitability to hear confession.

I'd be deeply concerned if parents were pressuring their teenage sons to confess, in a private or semi-private area, to someone like Mr Jones.

When will Catholics awaken to the simple fact that all they need do is confess to the presence of Christ in their hearts. Nothing more is required.

    5. 15.25: I agree with you. Lately MMM has become a cranky commentator with sweeping judgments about the Church he left. Some criticisms are valid but his sneering contempt is nauseating. Being the atheist he is why doesn't he concentrate his focus on the tyranny of his own credentials of liberal "tolerance" and "respect" for others who have a deep, religious perspective - virtues which he agrees are essential for dialogue around reform of any kind. Sadly, he is adopting some of Magna's awful, unbearable spirit - nastiness. Not very commendable.

MMM can make good, valid arguments but, like you and Magna, very often he is blind to his own "tyranny" of thought and analysis when other viewpoints don't concur with his worldview and more so if it is of a Catholic/Religious perspective. He has dumped his faith. That's fine but atheism hasn't left a positive legacy on the world.

  10. Firstly let me say it is sad to hear of this story of Monsignor Anatrella in that he has clearly led a double life, it appears he has not lived upto his commitment to celibacy, and he has abused a position of authority. I commend Archbishop Aupetit in suspending him and acting on such information. As for the accusation that the two previous Pontiffs St John Paul the Great and Pope Benedict XVI knew of this I question. Where is the evidence that they knew? The likelihood of them having any evidence is slim and that is a major leap and assumption, which of course this blog is infamous for.

Secondly I wish to comment about young Fr Sean Jones. In my reading of this blog I have never seen any substantial evidence that would have him convicted of a crime had homosexual activity still been illegal. I agree that there has been some information shared that suggests that he may have, but not enough to convince a jury nor enough to carry out a total character assassination which this blog seems to keep doing. It was St Augustine who said "the validity of the sacraments does not depend upon the worthiness of the celebrant." I love the image used by Henry Nouwen of the wounded healer, because that is what all priests, religious, teachers, nurses, social workers, counsellors and parents are. None of us are perfect. Only Jesus and the Virgin Mary where without sin. All of us have fallen short of the Grace of God. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." (John 8:7) I hope and pray that if Fr Sean Jones has fallen in the past in such a way this blog suggests, that he has received the help that he needs to live the life he is now committed to and that he receives the grace from God to build upon his nature. No person is beyond the redeeming power of God's grace.

May I suggest any of the following activities for those who seem to be obsessed with destroying this priests reputation and credibility:
    1: Pray for him
2: Offer sacrifices and penances for all our priests and especially those who struggle with celibacy
3: Complete an examination of conscience using the ten commandments and see if you have ever broken any of them?
4: Contemplate or reflect on a time when you were falsely accused of something, and maybe even punished for it and how did you feel? How did you react?
5: Reflect on the burden of proof and seriously weigh up what scant evidence which has been produced on this blog and in other places. (I have seen so little it is funny, but a lot of rumours and a lack of credible witnesses or names)

Finally I wish to share two anecdotes from an old friend of mine. He uses them often when discussing matters of proof and opinion. "There are three sides to any story, the accused, the accuser, and somewhere in-between them is the truth." And "opinions are like a*******s everyone has one."

    1. As this Monsignor played a central role ad using the Vatican it is very likely that senior there knew about him and covered up for him.

    2. It is very sad that a blogger uses his Mother against Father Jones does his Mother not even trust the Bishop well maybe he should suggest to his Mother to join the Oratory if she has No faith in Our priests or bishops.

father Jones is ordained a Holy Priest and approved by his Bishop and Rome also the Churches safeguarding Officers so all is fine.

the Churches PR people and Lawyers are well away what will happen someone will try and set Father Jones up and record him on their smart phone that's how low life they will be.

Sadly jealous people have their own agenda and cannot move on after being rejected by the One True Church.

  12. 10.40: Yes, Pat, "poor father has a weakness" - not an excuse for any kind of abusive behaviour. Never but that doesn't give any of us carte blanche to engage in a vendetta of nasty judgment, analysis and condemnation. The gospel asks us to "forgive", to show "mercy", to be "kind" and to lead, by good example, one another in God's ways. I can never fathom cruel and vindictive judgment.

  15. Is there a feeling that in a years time in the summer appointments of 2019 we might see Fr Sean Jones sent to "further studies" or "take sabbatical leave" when it becomes clear his ordination was wrong and that he just can't cope with the ordained life?

Or we maybe proved wrong, and ordination has changed him, and that he will become the priest the church needs.

Only time will tell. I question the decision to ordain him in the first place, but since it is now fact, he is a priest, the people of Tralee will just have to wait and see.

When it comes to clergy, the laity have no input whatsoever at all in who they want, who they get and how they are treated. It will never change.

    5. I’ve never been on here, so if someone else has with a similar story then it is obviously a regular occurrence. I am not condemning him for visiting a sauna, just for applying double standards. I’m no con artist mate.

    6. I’ve checked back on the blog. The previous story was about the Cathedral in Glasgow. I was not referring to the Cathedral, I was at a Church close to the City Centre, not the Mother Church.

    8. I’m a serving a Priest in said Archdiocese and sadly, the blogger is most likely genuine. He is right about the double standards, but fortunately most of us are trying our best with just the occasional lapse. Be grateful for prayers please rather than criticism. I’m offering night prayer for 1847 and for everyone else who has been hurt by any Priest or Religious. I will especially remember Pat Buckley who we all know has been badly hurt and let down by the hierarchy.

    9. 2008. This man is genuine. I live in Glasgow and I am a member of a LGBTI support group for RC’s. This is quite a common occurrence.

    10. 19.30: You are one big liar. Mischief making at its most horrible and devious. You should be reported to police. You are a dangerous fool with that crap story. You are not credible. Think you need a few twinks in the sauna to make you a man!

    11. Thanks 2109. I may not be credible to you, but I know what occurred. Last I checked, telling the truth wasn’t a crime. Re your twink comment - no thanks. Since that episode about four years ago, I have sought the necessary support to deal with my own sexuality issues and now I am out and very comfortable. Some but not all family
support me. I was in the Pride March yesterday here in Glasgow. Not dressed up, just being myself and walking with my good friend. I know it is difficult for Priests, but we cannot have such double standards and hypocrisy and that is what Bishop Buckley is trying to eradicate. I don’t have the will or the time, I was just rather hoping that my contribution might help the debate. Pray for me as I will you. Sorry if I have upset you.

  23. Pat et al. has anyone noticed that when making a comment on here a number of pop-ups appear?

  24. Speaking of Scotland - who is the butch looking PP of St Pius Moorside in Glasgow who wears fiddlebacks. He had a young and rather overweight Westminster priest visiting him recently. The big queen had far too many gins and scotch pies.

  25. There isn’t a St Pius Catholic Church in Glasgow mate and these is no area known as Moorside. I think you may be referring to the St Andrew’s Church, St Pius X order who love fiddlebacks.

    1. You might be thinking of St Pius X Parish in Consett, Hexham & Newcastle Parish not a million miles away from Scotland. It’s priest is Fr John Bagnall recently ordained from the Beda College and a fan of fiddlebacks. The Beda is another den of iniquity and a cover up involving Vinny Nichols happened there 3-4 years ago involving a Westminster Seminarian (now a Priest) who should never have been ordained. The Sean Jones saga pales into insignificance when compared with this. Is this Controversial priest friends with Fr Bagnall in Consett I wonder? They are both ex Beda men.

  26. +Pat, I hope you have a few more uplifting blogs soon; a charming new scandal from Mo'nooth, for example, or an update on the rogues' gallery.

  27. Sean Jones has thr full support of he Clergy and people. He has repented before God, so he should be given a chance now and left alone. He seems to be a clever and pleasant young man. If half the people on this blog had their way, there would be no Priests. No Priests = no Mass! And of course everyone on here is so bloody perfect!

    1. Of course there would be Mass without priests! The one and ONLY Mass took place 2000 years ago in the Upper Room: the Last Supper.

Anon @15:25 & 17:23: I drifted away from Catholicism about 50 years ago and living away from N. Ire never even thought about religious matter. In recent years now exposed to the pervasive almost dystopian N. Ire. preoccupation with religion parallel with worldwide revelations of clerical sexual abuse, duplicity and abuse of power and privilege I've become less tolerant of institutionalised religion and more outspoken concerning it. I see the range of those professing religious belief, at one extreme, from the moral, benign and altruistic often unquestioning follower to, at the other extreme those, especially the clergy, using religion as an a la carte vehicle for self indulgence, power and privilege. I make no apology for my intolerance of the latter and strive for balance in my criticism but appreciate I may not always get it right. MMM
