Pope Francis may not meet abuse survivors in Ireland, says archbishop

The Archbishop of Dublin said it would be 'great' if a meeting could be arranged but that 'time is very tight'
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin has said it is still uncertain whether or not Pope Francis will meet abuse survivors during his two-day visit to Ireland later this month.
Archbishop Martin said: “He will obviously speak about various forms of abuse not just clerical abuse, the abuse in the institutions, the laundries and the mother and baby homes. It would be great to meet some of the victims or survivors from that group, but the time is very tight.”
According to Irish media, the archbishop said the Vatican had not yet confirmed whether a meeting could take place.
Pope Francis will be in Ireland for 36 hours on the weekend of August 25-26. It will be the first time a pope has visited Ireland since 1979.
Among his stops will be Knock shrine and a Capuchin day centre for the homeless. On the Sunday he will celebrate the closing Mass of the World Meeting of Families in Phoenix Park, Dublin, with half a million people expected to attend.
Marie Collins, an abuse survivor and former member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, said on Twitter that if the Pope did not meet survivors it was “unlikely due to lack of time”.
“More like an effort to avoid the issue of abuse as the crisis grows worldwide,” she wrote. “No amount of ignoring will make it go away!”

David Quinn, director of the Iona Institute, which promotes marriage and religion, said it would be “very wrong” if the Pope did not meet survivors.

PAT SAYS:

When it comes to the imminent papal visit to Ireland I am like the dog at his father's funeral,  I couldn't give a damn one way or another.

Of course I will not be going. Why would I?

I am no longer attached to the multi national corporation  of which he is the CEO.

However, considering the moral and social devastation his underlings have imposed on the Irish, I think he certainly needs to meet and apologise to those people who are at the coal face of the used and abused.

Apparently he is coming for 36 hours. I think he could give one of those hours to the people his underlings tortured, raped and imprisoned.

He plans to spend 45 minutes praying to the Knock Virgin.

Would he not be better to spend that time with those whose virginity was taken by bishops, priests, brothers and nuns.

And if he really has to visit the West of Ireland should he not take his helicopter to Tuam and weep at the site where the Brides of Christ flung 600 babies into a tank meant for human waste.

Its all very bizarre and mind blowing.

The whited sepulchres spoken by the Nazarrne comes to mind.

WE ARE BACK IN ARMAGH TOMORROW.

  1. Like you Bishop I have zero interest in this popes visit. No amount of hype or liturgy or solemnity can deflect from the misdeeds of the Roman church in the 20th century on this island. But if he does insist on coming here, for the meeting of families, I think Franco shoukd look victims of the Church in the eye and say sorry.

  2. Nobody really cares were you are Buckley!
You've little following and the same bloggers on here every day.

Never mind victims of abuse, what about a meeting with the many families who's innocent loved one's lost their lives just because they were Catholics during the troubles in the occupied six counties, not even a visit north, shame on Rome and Francy!

  4. I hope and pray that some time will be do I d for Pope Francis to meet with survivors of clerical and institutional abuses. It is imperative that this be part of his visit. Yes, time is of the essence during a 36 hour visit. However, every effort should be made to have that space for Pope Francis with representative survivors. Saying that, I do not accept the "Pat says" response. It is vicious, nasty, unfair and imbalanced. The abuse reference to the "Knock Virgin" is gratuitously OFFENSIVE,and not for the first time has Pat made similar remarks re: Our Blessed Lady. Also the use of the verb "flung" re: Tuam babies is factually incorrect. Over some time this blog, led by Pat, has endeavoured to create trouble and mischief around WMOF - to blight its fantastic organisation under Fr. Bartlett; to downplay the incredible numbers attending; the success so far if reaching all expectations. Somehow, the success to date and the almost 1,000000 people seeking tickets is astounding. Irrespective of opinions, mindsets, faith persuasions or none, surely we can each pray that the visit of Pope Francis will be as fruitful and inspiring as possible. And that the poor, the homeless, the migrant and abused survivors will be given time in his presence. Other sniping, unkind and venomous attacks on him will be counter productive.

    2. 07:53, I’m no fan of Pat Buckley but cheerleaders like you literally turn my stomach.

I won’t be going near the empty Frankiefest either.

When you read what’s reported on here, I despair. No use blaming Buckley either.

He has his agenda we know but it’s not him who’s still covering up abuse.

Shower of useless bastards the Irish bishops and their brown nosers like Bartlett.

They can all go to Hell. Wait till you see the nauseating glad handing and backslapping of these goons at the end of this month. F*** the lot of them.

    4. Will there be 1,000,000 at Mass next Sunday or indeed any Sunday? More importantly will there be 1,000,000 people donating to the church next Sunday or indeed any Sunday Soon?

    5. @11.09 It's not all about numbers and quantity but quality. It certainly will be much better quality with your absence and the absence of the nothing that you contribute financially. I think the church will survive all the same thanks very much.

    6. @11:07, Timo doesn’t give two shites about any survivors. All he cares about is getting his pointy hat so that, at long last, he can join that select group of men, the members of which arses he has fawningly kissed, since he was in the seminary. He and they are all one big joke. Tell me this, Pat. Is Amy Martin, or anyone in Armagh, making any response at all to what Bill Mulvihill is alleging on your blog all week?

    7. 11 07: Why waste time listening to Comm O Gorman. He'll never be happy. And why should we listen to someone who has turned a once honourable, noble organisation- Amnesty Int. - into an advocacy group for the killing/murdering of unborn children. Quite ironic - those Who cry loudest against child abuse rarely raise their voices against the most inhhumane abuse of all - abortion. I find the practice reprehensible. But I have stopped supporting O'Gorman's version of Amnesty. So, Fr. Timothy, well done for your wonderful organising of WMOF. L8sten to the more balanced, inteigent and honest Marie Collins.

    8. The devout Catholic founder of Amnesty International would be appalled at the direction it has taken in Ireland under O'Gorman.

    9. 17 47: Totally agree with you. Amnesty Int under O' Gorman is morally bankrupt, backed up financially by big American philanthropists. Disgusting that a once move HUMAN RIGHTS organisation cares more about abortion - the vilest form of abuse - than prisoners of conscience or immigrants dying in the Mediterranean.

    10. It is very surprising that someone as gifted as Fr Timothy Bartlett has reached his 50s and is still not a bishop.

Nevertheless, observe and wait, for soon and very soon....

His gifts and talents, his superlative skills and ability revealed in his management of WMOF18, have greatly impressed His Eminence Kevin Cardinal Farrell and other high ranking Church dignitaries and officials.

Very shortly, within a matter of weeks, he is to be named to an important Vatican dicastery, to a position that carries the rank of Archbishop and the bearer of which is invariably raised to the Cardinalate.

The Holy Father himself plans to personally raise him to the order of Bishops and confer upon him the dignity of Archbishop, in St Peter’s Basilica, before Christmas.

It will be a proud and emotional day for His Eminence Sean Baptist Cardinal Brady, for His Grace Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, for the Lord Bishops of Ireland whom Fr Timothy has served so devotedly, to say nothing of the thrill in the heart of His Lordship the Most Reverend Noel Treanor and the clergy and lay faithful of Fr Timothy’s native diocese of Down and Connor.

We who, as it were, “know” of these things, await the news in a spirit of quiet joy and thanksgiving. Te Deum laudamus. Te Dominum confitemur.

  5. I'm sure Francis will hear the saddo views of all the usual regular whingers on here day in and day out. It will be his decision who he meets and not the decision of any dimwit on here. He will make time for those allegedly abused as he has done in many othee places. When he does meet them he will still be criticised by the pond life on this blog because some people's sad purpose in Life is to just moan.

  6. I think Archbishop Martin is being political - if for some reason it doesn’t happen, he can say, I knew it would be difficult but I tried my best, don’t blame me. If it does happen, he can say, although it was difficult, I pushed hard and made it happen.

  8. Abuse Survivore Meeting.
I think there will be very little chance of a meeting although if it does happen it will be in private and well away from the media. That way a few selected representatives of abuse survivors can have a wee chat under controlled conditions. Franco will have a well prepared statement to work from and the abuse survivors will be given the impression they are being listened to and will then be patted on the heads, told “There there now” and be given a nice wee rosary blessed before their very eyes by the man in white himself. They will then be ushered out a side door and whisked away in a car to a hotel somewhere far away from the prying eyes of the media. The Ballymascanlon, perhaps!
The thought of the cameras focusing on survivors going into a meeting, the actual meeting with the pope or coming out again and possibly becoming a major part of the days story, opening up the old wounds again and inviting fresh allegations , would be just too difficult for the church to stomach.
A half baked “ peace offering” may be worked into Francis schedule as a face saver if the wind blows too strong.
    Just sayin’ like.

  9. By the Grace of God I'm out of it.

But isn't it madness to send a man of 81 on a 36-hour trip to a distant land; and then having him flying about in a helicopter, presiding at big events, meeting important people et al.

Who was it thought up this schedule? Are they trying to bump him off?

  11. I wonder how the Irish television broadcasters are going to treat this event this month?

Will RTE do their usual sycophantic, cap doffing, boot licking of the catholic hierarchy, whilst slamming them all the time? Bryan Dobson not doubt in full flow live from every location, trying to be the David Dimbleby of RTE, when in effect he is lucky if he can be considered the Jonathan Dimbleby of RTE.

Back in 1979, from looking at the old RTE Guides, you can see wall to wall coverage of Saint JP 2, the kiddie fiddler enabler's visit to Ireland. RTE just caved in and became the smarm, smarm, boot licking, ass kissers of the roman church. I wonder if that will happen now?

Then over to TV3 (or Virgin 1 by the end of August 2018) - probably a blink and you miss it update on the event, which is right. TV3 mounting a big live coverage operation is hardly likely, it is the only thing I like about that empty network, trying so hard to be the ITV of Ireland.

TG4 - since their are based in the Gaeltacht, and at the heart of traditional conservative catholic land, I have no doubt they will have a large presence there.

Imagine if all the Irish broadcasters just relegated coverage of this non event to their main news bulletins. I wonder how the catholic hierarchy would feel then?

Well no doubt papa Frank and his hoard will enjoy themselves, and will do their best PR to make a non event look huge. They must have hired in Donald Trump's team of PR advisers, maybe we will see the former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer telling us at the end of the day this was the largest event ever held in Ireland, with more people attending than 1979.

    1. @22:26, Timmy has pleaded repeatedly, for years and years, with both Paddy Walsh and Noel Trainor, to be sent to a tough parish like Tuff Lodge, or Ballymurph, or Twinklebrook, or Ballymena, to no avail!!

His pleas fall on deaf ears. He’s even begged Diarmuid Martin to allow him do a few days a week in Ballyer or Talafornia, while he’s based in Dublinia for the WMOF - but in vain!!

It’s all he wants, you know - to serve as a simple humble priest - in an area rough as a dog’s arse - but he’s repeatedly thwarted.

It not God’s Will for him, you see and he must simply say, ‘Thy Will - not mine - be done’.
