TWO CARDINALS NOW HAVE PULLED OUT OF WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES OVER ABUSE OF CHILDREN AND SEMINARIANS

O' MALLEY OF BOSTON
WUERL OF WASHINGTON

CARDINAL WUERL MUST GO

Tim Carney, commentary editor at The Washington Examiner, says the Archbishop of Washington was dismissive of the Pennsylvania grand jury report that names 300 Catholic priests as having abused children or helped cover up the abuse.

WASHINGTON -- In 1972, Pope Paul VI warned that "the smoke of Satan has entered the Church of God." We see that smoke throughout the report from a Pennsylvania grand jury, which alleges that more than 300 priests abused more than 1,000 children in six Pennsylvania dioceses -- including 99 priests from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, which was led for 18 years by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, now archbishop of Washington.
How bad was the abuse? The report notes that "during the course of this investigation, the Grand Jury uncovered a ring of predatory priests operating within the [Pittsburgh] Diocese who shared intelligence or information regarding victims as well as exchanging the victims amongst themselves. This ring also manufactured child pornography ... [and] used whips, violence and sadism in raping their victims." According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, one victim, a boy named George, "was forced to stand on a bed in a rectory, strip naked and pose as Christ on the cross for the priests. They took photos of their victim, adding them to a collection of child pornography which they produced and shared on church grounds." Abusing a child while mocking the Passion of Christ is truly diabolical.
Wuerl, who served as the bishop of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 2006, did discipline some priests -- and even went to the Vatican to fight an order that he reinstate one. But the grand jury also wrote that he reassigned other predator priests -- including the one who "groomed" George and introduced him to the ring that photographed him. In at least one case, Wuerl required a victim to sign a "confidentiality agreement" barring him from discussing his abuse with any third party as part of a settlement.
That is a coverup. In addition, the grand jury also wrote that under his leadership the diocese failed to report allegations of abuse to law enforcement, advocated for a convicted predator at sentencing, and then provided a $11,542.68 lump-sum payment to the disgraced priest after his release from prison.
The grand jury report comes on the heels of the sickening accusations that Wuerl's predecessor as Washington archbishop, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, sexually abused seminarians and young priests, and spent nearly 20 years molesting a young boy, the first person he baptized, beginning when the child was 11.
After the McCarrick allegations, Wuerl declared, "I don't think this is some massive, massive crisis." Excuse me, Your Eminence?
It is a massive, massive crisis. How was McCarrick allowed to rise through the hierarchy despite the countless warnings to both his fellow bishops and the Vatican that he was a sexual predator? Who knew? Who helped him? The same conspiracy of silence that allowed sexual predators to flourish in Wuerl's Pittsburgh diocese for decades also allowed McCarrick to become, until just a few weeks ago, one of the most powerful American cardinals, even in retirement.
This is not just a matter of getting rid of a few bad apples. There is a ring of abusers and their enablers in the Catholic hierarchy that must be rooted out. Every report of abuse that was overlooked or ignored, every abuse that was covered up with a nondisclosure agreement, must be exposed. The bishops and cardinals who ignored or covered up abuses are complicit and must be removed. The church must be cleansed, and the conspiracy of silence ended.
The only way to do this is through an independent investigation. The church has proved itself incapable of self-investigation and self-policing -- which is evidenced by the fact we are just learning new details of the horrific extent of abuse from a grand jury 16 years after the scandal first erupted. My American Enterprise Institute colleague Michael Strain has recommended bringing back former Oklahoma governor, federal prosecutor and faithful Catholic Frank Keating to lead the investigation.
In 2003, Keating resigned from a lay-member church-appointed board looking into abuse after he refused to apologize for comparing the coverup by the bishops to the Mafia. That makes him precisely the right man for the job.

The bishops not only failed the victims but have also scandalized the church, undermined its teaching authority and driven countless people away from Christ. How many failed to go to confession, or left the sacraments, because of their actions -- or their failure to act? We will never know. But they should heed Mark's Gospel, where Jesus warns, "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea." This must be a time of repentance. Repentance requires accountability. And accountability requires resignations -- starting with Wuerl's.

    A) abuse
    B) condone
    C) ignore abuse.

False apologies are no longer enough..

  2. The sexual acts carries out upon the Altar in the diocese of Cloyne were satanic.

If, as is widely alleged, a priest of that diocese and a Maynooth seminarian perpetrated this diabolical sacrilege, then there needs to be a thorough investigation leading to the culprits being identified, the priest being dismissed from the clerical state and the seminarian dismissed immediately and permanently from the seminary.

If appropriate, they should both be prosecuted.

The silence and inactivity around this matter by the Bishop of Cloyne is very disturbing indeed. The faithful need to be reassured that such a monstrous blasphemy is taken very seriously.

    1. Worse things have happened. It won't surprise readers if it turns out seminarians were taking advantage of the hunky drunkard. The altar has since been hosed down. What more do you want? He’d only be admonished, anyway, or bound over for good behavior.

  3. The Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, is lying with regard to his knowledge of McCarrick's molestation and rape of children, seminarians and young priests.

Farrell was ordained a bishop by McCarrick and was McCarrick's auxiliary bishop and house mate for six years in Washington DC. It is beyond belief for Farrell to maintain his ignorance of McCarrick's decades-long history of abuse considering that journalists, seminarians, priests and men such as the late Richard Sipe all knew.

Two settlements totalling $180,000 were paid to two priests abused by McCarrick when he was bishop of Metuchen and Newark before moving to Washington. So Farrell, whom it is stated is an excellent administrator, did not spot the big increase in McCarrick's insurance premiums subsequent to the aforementioned payouts? You may be sure that if Farrell did not know about McCarrick's history, Washington's insurance company underwriters did.

Farrell also never, apparently, heard that a priest sent a letter in 1994 to McCarrick's successor in Metuchen, Bishop Hughes, stating that McCarrick inappropriately touched him? He never heard about Fr David Ramsey's warning to JP11 not to install McCarrick as Archbishop of Washington in 2000, having first discussed his concerns with the Papal Nuncio, Gabriel Higuera? Farrell did not know about Richard Sipe's letter to Benedict XVI in 2008 which stated that McCarrick's abuse "had been widely known for several decades"? And which letter has been easily accessible on the internet for years.

Farrell's claim of ignorance of McCarrick's history of abuse does not hold up upon even superficial scrutiny. Either that or he has lived in a self-made bubble for decades.

  4. Pope Francis can also not be trusted to take decisive action with these lying cardinals. Remember, this is the Pope who called the Chilean clerical abuse survivors "dumb" and defended the now disgraced Bishop Barros stating that the allegations made against him were "slander" and "calumny". The Pope certainly had egg on his face when the entire Chilean Episcopate subsequently tendered their resignations.

Pope Francis speaks out of both sides of his mouth and has proven himself an absolute disaster regarding his much touted claim of "zero tolerance" for clerical abuse. He appears to be a bungling buffoon at best.

By the way the Irish Dominicans house 2 of their former child abusing members and still pay for their living expenses. I wonder if the people they live beside know how dangerous they are to children. They are called Andy Allen and Vincent Mercer. Allen abused children in the confessional.

  12. The naming of two Irish OPs opens up an interesting debate. What is the Church and / or Religious Orders to do with men who have been part of them for many decades, and then are found to have transgressed / sinned / abused etc ? The normal course of the law must take place, and some will be disposed of by the criminal justice system and then find themselves perhaps in jail. But, for those individuals whose transgression doesn't meet that legal threshold, what is the Diocese / Religious Order to do with this individual ?

There is an argument that says that the most responsible thing to do is to ensure that this individual is overseen in some form or fashion, so that he is not able to transgress again. That might mean ensuring that he is kept fed and watered and his ordinary needs are taken care of within a supportive and overseeing situation, perhaps even continuing in a religious community. The other alternative is to kick them out with no supervision, and see what happens. By and large the State will not concern themselves with an individual who is not the focus of the criminal justice system, or who does not have a criminal conviction, and even then they would probably only do so for a period of time and with the resources that they have, for example probation, but those resources are finite and limited. So, eventually the person concerned would go unsupervised. And, without supervision is probably more likely to recidivism and reoffending.

So, what is the responsible thing to do ? I can understand the desire to see these people kicked out, made to live on their own, find their own resources etc. But, will that achieve the ultimate desired end, which is to ensure the they do not reoffend, and that children and vulnerable people are kept safe ?

So, maybe the two Irish OPs are being supervised, overseen, and in such a way are being prevented from becoming a further problem ? It might sound as though they are just being given a cushy life, and have got away with it. And, maybe they have in some respects. But for the purposes of ensuring the children and vulnerable people are protected, maybe it is the best and securest way forward, rather than just cutting them off an leaving them unsupported and unsupervised and thereby more like to reoffend.

    ReplyDelete

    1. An excellent well thought out and honest answer to a very thorny question. What is the right and best way to deal with some who have offended. Granted it is easier to want and demand for the offenders heads, and in many ways this is the popular response- but is this necessarily the best approach? I do not want to be accused of being seen as an enabler of abuse or one who condones it in any way, but sometimes this is the best way to manage offenders.

    1. Not unexpected views considering his position as, President and CEO of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. To say that he debunks the Pennsylvania report is simply nonsense.

Indeed, please read the following response from the Vatican in response to the Pennsylvania report:-

(CNN)The Vatican broke its silence on Thursday about a Pennsylvania grand jury report that detailed decades of sexual abuses by priests and cover-ups by bishops, calling the accusations "criminal and morally reprehensible."

"Regarding the report made public in Pennsylvania this week, there are two words that can express the feelings faced with these horrible crimes: shame and sorrow," said Greg Burke, director of the Vatican's Press Office.
"The Holy See treats with great seriousness the work of the Investigating Grand Jury of Pennsylvania and the lengthy Interim Report it has produced. The Holy See condemns unequivocally the sexual abuse of minors."

  34. What the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report underlines - which of course we knew already - is that the bishops are not just part of the problem, they are the key to the problem. They appointed the Seminary Rectors. They ordained the priests. They received the complaints. They hired the lawyers and the PR consultants and decided how to respond. Those bishops, the great majority, who came to know of serious abuse, and of the roots of serious abuse in seminaries and in the collapsing spiritual and liturgical lives of their priests and parishes, and acted only to cover up, evade questions, tell victims to be quiet, do deals with state prosecutors, and shuffle priests around ‘treatment centres’ which affirmed them in their disordered proclivities: what are we to say of them? They could see the problem, but not only did they not address it appropriately, they took determined, aggressive steps to keep the corrupt system going: using the law where they could, using moral coercion where they could, using hush-money where necessary, and telling lies. These are the best men to undertake the necessary reform, Mr Flynn?

To say that they are psychologically ill-equipped to carry out a root-and-branch reform would be something of an understatement. There will be no change of culture while these men dominate the episcopate.
