RECTOR OF BOSTON SEMINARY ACCUSED OF ABUSING SEMINARIANS

BOSTON (CBS) – The rector of St. John’s Seminary in Brighton has been placed on leave during an independent investigation into claims by two former seminarians of alleged sexual misconduct there.

In a statement, Cardinal Seán O’Malley said the two former seminarians of St. John’s Seminary recently posted allegations on social media sites, including the Archdiocese’s Facebook page, of their experiences and observations while at the seminary.

The former seminarians claim that “they witnessed and experienced activities which are directly contrary to the moral standards and requirements of formation for the Catholic priesthood,” O’Malley said.

O’Malley did not elaborate on the claims by the seminarians or the alleged activities they witnessed or experienced.

“At this time I am not able to verify or disprove these allegations,” O’Malley said. “As Archbishop of Boston, with responsibility for the integrity of the seminary and its compliance with the Church’s Program for Priestly Formation, I am committed to immediate action to address these serious matters.”

In a statement late Friday afternoon, Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who is representing a former St. John’s seminarian, slammed the Archdiocese for “continuing to practice the cover up of sexual abuse.”

“The recent reporting of sexual abuse at St. John’s Seminary is further evidence that the Archdiocese of Boston is continuing to practice the cover up of sexual abuse and will not practice transparency to help sexual abuse victims heal,” said Garabedian, who previously represented several victims in the church sex abuse scandal. “The Archdiocese of Boston should publically release all records and information relative to sexual abuse at St. John’s Seminary so that sexual abuse victims can try to heal.”

“The creation of an investigatory board or team should have taken place decades ago,” Garabedian said. “Given the horrible history of sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of Boston it should come as no surprise that sexual abuse has taken place at St. John’s Seminary.”

O’Malley said he asked Msgr. James P. Moroney, rector of St. John’s, to go on sabbatical leave for the fall semester, effective immediately so “that there can be a fully independent inquiry regarding these matters.”
O’Malley said he has appointed The Rev. Stephen Salocks, professor of sacred scripture, to serve as interim rector at St. John’s.

A group that includes religious clergy, a college president, and a Boston lawyer “will oversee an inquiry into the allegations made this week, the culture of the seminary regarding the personal standards expected and required of candidates for the priesthood, and any seminary issues of sexual harassment or other forms of intimidation or discrimination,” O’Malley said.

That group includes the Most Rev. Mark O’Connell, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston; Assumption College President Francisco Cesareo, who also serves as president of the USCCB National Review Board, which advises the USCCB on matters of child and youth protection policies and practices; Boston attorney Kimberly Jones and Attorney Mark Dunderdale, director of the Archdiocesan Office of Professional Standards and Oversight.

O’Malley said he has directed the group, “with due seriousness of their assignment,” to submit their findings to him “as soon as possible,” along with “recommendations to assure appropriate standards of professional behavior in compliance with Church teaching at all levels of seminary life.”

“The allegations made this week are a source of serious concern to me as Archbishop of Boston,” O’Malley said. “The ministry of the Catholic priesthood requires a foundation of trust with the people of the Church and the wider community in which our priests serve. I am determined that all our seminaries meet that standard of trust and provide the formation necessary for priests to live a demanding vocation of service in our contemporary society.”

Report damns culture of acceptance of sexual abuse at two Catholic schools

Inquiry says Ampleforth and Downside put own reputations before protection of children

The true scale of sexual abuse at two of the UK’s leading Catholic independent schools over a period of 40 years is likely to have been far greater than has been proved in the courts, a report by the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse has concluded.
Ten people have been convicted or cautioned in relation to sexual offences at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and Downside in Somerset. The schools “prioritised the monks and their own reputations over the protection of children … in order to avoid scandal”, says the 211-page report published by IICSA on Thursday after hearings last year.
The monks avoided giving information to or cooperating with statutory authorities investigating abuse, it says. Their approach could be summarised as “a ‘tell them nothing’ attitude”.
The report says: “Appalling sexual abuse [was] inflicted over decades on children as young as seven at Ampleforth school and 11 at Downside school.”
The inquiry heard that boys were made to strip naked and were beaten. Some were allegedly forced to give and receive oral sex, both privately and in front of other pupils. Alleged abuse included digital penetration of the anus and children being compelled to perform sex acts on each other.
Physical abuse had sadistic and sexual overtones, the report says. One survivor described his abuser at Ampleforth as “an out-and-out sadist”.
A victim of Fr Piers Grant-Ferris, who was convicted in 2006 of assaulting 15 boys, described being forced to straddle a bath naked as the monk beat him while masturbating. It was “absolutely terrifying”, he told the inquiry.

DOWNSIDE

“Many perpetrators did not hide their sexual interests from the children. The blatant openness of these activities demonstrates there was a culture of acceptance of abusive behaviour,” the report says.
Ten people, mostly monks, connected to the two schools have been convicted or cautioned in relation to offences involving sexual activity with a large number of children, or pornography.
Ampleforth and Downside are schools attached to abbeys of the English Benedictine Congregation, and are regarded as leading Catholic independent schools.
Monks at both institutions were “very often secretive, evasive and suspicious of anyone outside the English Benedictine Congregation,” the report says.
In 2001 the Nolan report made recommendations on the safeguarding of children in the Catholic church, including that incidents or allegations of sexual abuse should be referred to the statutory authorities.
Both schools “seemed to take a view that [the report’s] implementation was neither obligatory nor desirable. This failure to comply appeared to go unchallenged by the Catholic church,” the IICSA report says. “At Ampleforth and Downside, a number of allegations were never referred to the police but were handled internally.”
It says an abbot of Ampleforth between 1997 and 2005, Timothy Wright, “clung to outdated beliefs about ‘paedophilia’ and had an immovable attitude of always knowing best”.
Abbots at both schools would confine suspected perpetrators to the abbey or transfer them elsewhere. Records were destroyed by both schools, the report says. One former headmaster of Downside “made several trips with a wheelbarrow with files to the edge of the estate and made a bonfire of them”.
During the inquiry’s hearings, senior clergymen in the English Benedictine Congregation expressed regret for past failures to protect children. However, this was “not accompanied by full acknowledgement of the tolerance of serious criminal activity, or the recognition that previous ‘misjudgment’ had devastating consequences for the lives of the young people involved.”
The report recommends a strict separation between the governance of the two abbeys and the schools.
It acknowledges that some steps have been taken but says neither school has formally established a comprehensive redress system and no public apology has been made.
In April the Charities Commission stripped the charitable bodies that run Ampleforth of their safeguarding oversight and appointed an interim manager.
IICSA said it could draw no conclusions over an allegation that Michael Gove, while he was education secretary, intervened in a sexual abuse investigation at Downside.
Claire Winter, the deputy director of children’s services responsible for children’s social care at Somerset county council, told the inquiry she received two calls from Gove and his office asking for information about the investigation into a priest suspected of abuse at the school in 2010. Her evidence was backed up by another safeguarding official, Jane Dziadulewicz.
After questions from the inquiry, Gove said he had not personally made any phone calls and he had no interest in the investigation. He said there was no record of any calls being made from his offices.
Winter provided another statement to the inquiry standing by her evidence. IICSA said: “We take the view that there is insufficient evidence on this point from which to draw any conclusions.”
Richard Scorer, a lawyer from Slater and Gordon who represented several victims from Ampleforth and Downside at the inquiry, said: “This familiar and shameful story of cover-up has been told time and time again and is a devastating indictment of an organisation guilty of gross failures on child protection.”
Responding to the report, one survivor said: “I trusted [the church] to help but instead my life was destroyed and I was handed a life sentence of suffering by my abuser and those who failed to act against it.”
Peter Garsden, president of the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers, said the report’s findings were “damning, both in terms of the failure of the Roman Catholic church to protect children from the abuse in the first place and with regards to the wholly dismissive way in which the subsequent allegations were acted upon.”
Garsden and Scorer called for a new law to make the reporting of allegations of sexual abuse to the authorities mandatory.
The Catholic church in England noted the report’s conclusions and said it stood by expressions of regret and apologies already made on its behalf to victims and survivors.
“All sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults is both criminal and harmful. The church condemns without reservation any such crimes and the perpetrators of these crimes must be brought to justice,” it said.

IICSA will hold a further public hearing into another Benedictine abbey and school, Ealing and St Benedict’s, early next year.

  1. The statement doesn't say or even imply that the Rector, Msgr Moroney, has been accused of anything. It simply says that he has been placed on sabbatical so that the investigation can be totally independent.

OUR HOLY MOTHER THE CHURCH,IS THE IMMACULATE BRIDE OF CHRIST. It is evil people who do not follow Her teachings who are what you describe.

I will remind you AGAIN! that there are many good priests and religious, we just never hear of them. Anyway I'm just off to Holy Mass where I will remember you as I always do. Love and prayers B. Eviva Maria!

Predictable too that Buckley has given you publicity yet again and the old broken record keeps playing. You ran scared of Mulvihill and where frightened of him and shit yourself and kept your trap shut and we now know why. Maybe he should come back on and put manners on you.

Oh look, her wig's fallen off!

@Bellarmine the odd instance of apparent holiness will never make this bride holy, you numbskull. You might as well throw a diamond in a drain and say it's a jewellers shop.

Sorry; there is more of this crap, but I couldn't type on. The stench of the oily Latino's hypocrisy wss just too much to bear.

This is the papal bastardo, along with all of the other papal bastardos, for whom child protection meant SFA in relation to preserving the reputation 😅 of the institutional Roman Catholic Church.

The oily Latino's record on child protection was only recently described as a 'dismal failure' by former national safeguarding officer, Ian Elliot.

And it was the oily Latino who allowed the two survivors of child-sexual abuse by priests to resign in disgust/anger from the so-called 'Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors'. It, too, has been, to date, largely a failure, a blatant piece of papal window dressing by the oily Latino to deceive Catholics about Francis' 'I don't give a f**k!' attitude towards child protection in the Church.

Why? Why do people continue to listen to this slimy deceiver?

But hark, I hear a mobile phone ringing! The ringtone is Willam Belli's Only Anally. The immaculate bride rifles through her handbag to see which of her phones is ringing. Is it her pimp or her dealer? No, neither. It's not even a call, it's a text from her reputation management solicitor: 'Deny everything, burn the files and keep on telling them you're the immaculate bride of Christ. And do something about your mascara, you silly cow'. The bride sighs, reaches for her mirror and gets ready to deceive again.

  6. In reference to the IRISH PP about tickets being sent to parishes, I and many of my colleagues have not heard of such a happening and if true, so what? Is this guy making trouble? What parishes have received, in the Dublin Diocese is an invitation for 10 parishioners to join in the Evening Prayer at the RDS on Tuesday 21 Aug from 7.30 - 8.30. There may be confusion!! But overall, as one involved at some level of preparation, all events are fully booked. Praise God and may God bless Pope Francis.

  7. What is the Pope doing coming to Ireland in this sickening mess. If he was a man of worth and of God he would cancel the meetings, the Masses and the celebrity handshakes and come over and sort out this mess like any head of an organisation normally would. How can he ignore the obvious and stand in front of thousands at a Mass knowing what is going on by those standing at his shoulders. He would, if he was a man of God, follow Jesus’s example and meet with the survivors of church abuse and make time for them. Given the depth and breadth of the corruption he should, horror of horrors, appoint a lay person (even non catholic and imagine it could even be a women) and give them the power to thoroughly examine the church and sort out the corruption, its misuse of funds by those in power and the rampant sexual misdemeanors. It should be scourged from the top down and the gentle good hard working priests, of which there are some, (who are sickened to the core with all this) must be supported and encouraged. The rot has gone too far and too deep, and it is unbelievable that despite the constant revelations it has been allowed to continue. The sour bitter comments on this blog, show the contempt for honesty, and the determination some have to avoid anyone challenging their disgusting unchristian lifestyle.

So if Timothy does not get a mitre he will be scorned and may reveal all so interesting times ahead.

    1. 1012. The story re KOB and those close to him rumbles on. Of course we should pray for all involved, but it is also important to know the truth. I only know what is corroborated, but 2 of my good friends in the Diocese are investigating and will release more in the next months to a trusted journalist about the strange goings on here. Some unanswered questions and observations from me and several brother Priests meantime. Fr John Scally was banished to Zurich by KOB, the new Arch then removed him from Ministry - why? Then there is the tragic suicide story - any connection? Then Fr Gilhooley - he was very close to KOB and was given several sabbaticals by KOB. He was sent to and remains in Switzerland. The new Archbishop
will not let him back apparently - why? Fr Robson was very close to KOB and has been moved to another Diocese by the new Archbishop - why? The new Archbishop is aware of at least 3 actively gay clergy (2 of them are well know for having an alleged relationship with KOB) and they are still Parish Priests here - why? Why exactly did those who had long term relations with KOB all turn against him in the end? This was consensual sex, therefore we must assume that they are as guilty as he is. Who orchestrated his downfall and for what reason? Why have none of them been taken to task? We owe the lay faithful an explanation. If any of these guys are still in Ministry then surely they need to be named so that layity can decide to continue supporting their Parishes or otherwise? Lay faithful are paying for their upkeep and some of him are still at it like rabbits. I don’t buy the story around KOB promising someone a Mitre who then didn’t get it and that Priest therefore plotted against him. Pray for all involved here as this mess just isn’t going away. The new Archbishop doesn’t know what to do about it either.

    6. 19.46 the late Mike Regans was promised the mitre and the three names went to Rome and they picked Robson and then knew the mistake and poor MGR McCafferty did not get Dunkeld as they had to move Robson there.
Sadly Mike passed away and that left the other two in active ministry and still in the same parishes that Keith gave them and I feel Sorry for the parishioners.

Leo should know the new Archbishop's Council is talk of the place and it is shocking.

Both of Scotland's Archbishops know just like the laity it is the GAY (Active) clergy that are running both Archdiocese.

It is shocking but I hope justice is done for KOB as these active priests should go now or look at themselves in the mirror the laity is catching on.

The late Administrator of Saint Mary's Cathedral got a better send off then KOB and yet KOB maybe not white as pure but certainly whiter than the late administrator.

Justice must be done for KOB and his family and friends.

    7. 1832. Peace be with you. How very sad. I agree entirely that justice needs to be done for KOB and for those who loved him. These Priests need to be named and shamed and sent on their way. Horrible nasty queens. Wasn’t Robson active too? At least if he was, he wouldn’t have done the dirty on KOB like the others I suppose. The laity are catching on and I know of a group who have recently formed who are paying investigators, one a very senior ex cop. My plea to +Pat is that he dedicates a blog to inviting info about these people as nothing will ever change until they are outed. The Archbishops of St Andrews and Glasgow may have a mitre and a ring, but as you say the gays are most definitely controlling both places. Their time is thankfully coming to an end either through this blog or from elsewhere.

    11. 1858 the administrator was never out of the gay pubs and clubs in centre of Edinburgh.

Robson did not play a part in it he just accepted the mitre that was promised to Mike.

So Mike and friends decided to bring down KOB.

Philip who was appointed for a year thought it would be better if Robson was moved very lucky that Dunkeld became vacant.

They then move Jamie into the Cathedral and Cushley moved in out on voclare you will hear Jamie saying Mike was the Best and in his parish the Cardinal was / is never mentioned.

Fallon and Smith and others need looked at.

The Cardinal may have done wrong but so are these active clergy in parishes and lead a double life.

Hope the investigation gets the correct results.

The least the Church could have done was let KOB get buried from his Cathedral.

  10. Oh Pat, you really are a tiresome repetitive little toad.
We are all well aware of the shortcomings in the church and are supporting best practice to overcome them. Does the HSE go into meltdown when it's failures are exposed e.g. the cervical smear debacle or the untested vaccines? of course not. They acknowledge the failure and work like mad to ensure it won't happen again. Pope Francis is leading the reform and empowering others to do the same.
So go rain on someone else's parade. WMF is going to be a resounding success - f@#k the begrudgers.

No one will be more happy than Father Timothy Bartlett and is he going to be next Archbishop of Dublin.

Who else could take on Dublin and it seems the Archbishop is asking for a Coadjutor to assist him given that his two assistants are retiring as well.

    1. Dear Bill, the affection and blessing is returned a hundred fold.

I hope I have no clericalism in me. So, I want to be thought of and cared about as a human being and not as the holder of some office.

My saving grace was that as one of 17 children who grew up in relative poverty I never regarded my self superior to anyone.

Of course my enemies will seize on my words.

You Bill are on a Providential journey that will take you to where you are meant to be.

    2. 18.36: Such crap! You have clericalism in you. You have a title - though self given - "Bishop" and you wear clerical garb, a cross around your neck!! Why don't you just wear civvies? Many priests grew up in poverty with no airs and graces, just kind, caring people. I thank God for them. Pat, woukd you advise Bill to cop on, to stop embarrasdingbhimself. And remind him, that like you, our salary comes from the people of our parishes. Therefore he should be more grateful.

    3. Being a bishop is simply being the overseeing elder of a Christian community, which I am.

Being a bishop is part of the Sacrament of Holy Orders that can only be given through ordination/consecration and cannot self given.

I wear my collar more than many priests do for two deliberate reasons

      1. To give witness to Christ, although that has been sullied by many.

      2. To let people know I am there for them if they need me.

My cross cost me Euro 40 on eBay and I like it because it is Trinitarian.

Every day I get the opportunity to be kind and caring, thank God.

I will let Bill speak for himself.

    4. 20.21: And I never stop giving thanks to God for the many good, kind, caring priests who give wonderful witness to Christ.
