In response to questions, the archdiocese said Nov. 7 that then-Archbishop Philip Hannan removed Seery's faculties amidst the allegation in 1978 "and law enforcement was involved in the investigation. Seery returned to Ireland."

Reposing at Daly’s Funeral Homeon Wednesday 15th from 6.00pm to 7.30pm
Removal at 7.30pm to St. Joseph’s Church, Ennis.Funeral Mass on Thursday 16th at 12 noon.
Burial in Corrovorrin Cemetery.
May Eternal Light shine on him.

Yesterday a Dublin journalist informed me that a now-deceased seminary classmate of mine has appeared on the list of fifty-seven credibly accused priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans in the USA Father Joe Seery.

I knew that he had been ordained for New Orleans. We were ordained on the same day by the bishop in the above pic - Bishop Michael Russell of Waterford and Lismore.
I was aware that Joe left New Orleans very quickly and then received appointments within the Archdiocese of Tuam, Ireland.
I am now surprised and shocked that Joe, who ordained at - went on to abuse within a year or so of his ordination.
In that context, it is extremely worrying that after abusing in the USA he managed to be accepted into Tuam and was allowed to serve in four parishes where he had access to children.
It is particularly worrying that he worked at Knock Shrine where he would have unrestricted access to children from all over the country and the world.
Joe Seery was accepted into Tuam by Archbishop Joseph Cunnane.

There was no indication in the seminary that he was an abuser / potential abuser - at least not that I saw.
Joe Seery died at the age of fifty-eight.
I do not know the cause of his death. Maybe others do?

ARMAGH PRIEST DENIES GRINDR ACCUSATION AND SAYS HE IS REPORTING THE MATTER TO THE GARDA AND HIS LEGAL ADVISORS.
A prominent Armagh priest - Father Brian White - is extremely angry at being accused of having a profile on the GRINDR app and has said that he will be reporting the false accusation to his legal advisors and the Garda.
When I received the allegation I immediately contacted Father White by telephone and as he was not available I left a message and my telephone number.

Bishop Pat, do you consider the person who made the report to you in regard to Fr.White being a user of Grindr to be credible? You must receive copious amounts of such allegations, and I am quite sure that you don't publish any such item without the veracity of it being examined first. It is possible the accused priest has never met anyone, but has been corresponding with males and arranging meet ups, and not following through! You know more than any of us, and I suspectvas you have published his name, more is to be revealed! What about the quartet of Armagh priests and the Polish priest you mentioned some time ago on your blog? I'm sure that there's nefarious activities they've all engaged in that they wouldn't want the people of God to know about. Could you let us know how Fr.Mulvihill is doing? He has made a courageous step. He has many admirers and it would be Good to hear how he is.

DeleteI recall someone reporting to the dean of formation that I was having an affair with a female theology student. The dean had no evidence so he decided to question some seminarians to see if anybody had witnessed anything. Word spread like wildfire in Maynooth that I "had been caught".
In reality there was no truth to the rumour; but the rumour took a life of it's own.
The effect was that I was isolated in the seminary community for fear peers would attract unwarrented attention from the deans.
Another effect was that a classmate of mine was given the perfect cover, for he had been having an affair with that theology student (my only evidence for that is the word of the theology student involved). Now they could continue with perfect cover. He's now a PP.
So my point is, if you make an accusation have your evidence and let it be open to discernment.

Bishop Pat, I attended Mass at 6.15pm in Magherafelt this evening. Fr John Gates related a story of helping a Mother come to terms with her gay son during a recent pilgrimage. I presume people on that pilgrimage now know who that Mother may be and the identity of her Son. Is it right that a confidential pastoral matter should be told from the altar? We heard much about mercy tonight from Fr Gates but the man clearly doesn't know the meaning of the word. He has been gloating recently to his select few bingo friends that he wont be hearing from you in a hurry again as he sent you a solicitors letter. It seems his mask is beginning to slip again and his arrogance is fast returning. Just thought you would appreciate the update Bishop.
