Unfortunately, it seems its whole organisational modus operandi subscribes to an absolutionist ethos of preserving a self serving status quo of unquestionable superiority.
In this, those in powerful positions of control rose through the ranks, but have virtually no understanding of sexuality's compelling imperatives, and of the absolute dehumanising unrealistic expectation of imposing absolute celibacy on virile young men.
And for what reason? Certainly there's no sound basis in early christianity that I'm aware of, other than Pauline misogynistic admonitions. And that it's so the clergy can focus on their priestly role without family distractions is simply a stupid assertion with no emperical evidence.
But even as a humanist, I recognise many people need a religious belief, and the christian religions have much potential for good being derived from the basic tenents advocated by Christ.
So the RC church could potentially be a major influence in that. Pope Francis has made a cautious start, but has he, or indeed any individual the energy, strength and courageous endurance to change the institutional self preserving ethos of a centuries old clerical establishment?
The debate is open.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
