WERE TWO SEMINARIANS HURT IN MAYNOOTH?

WERE TWO SEMINARIAN HURT IN MAYNOOTH IN DIFFERENT WAYS IN RECENT TIMES?

I ask this question because I have received a report from a Maynooth source claiming this.

I wrote about this to Eamon Martin two days ago and he never answered me.

He neither agreed that these things had happened or denied they had happened.

What are we to make of Eamon Martin's "No Comment"?

Personally I do not think its good enough for the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland - and a trustee of Maynooth to simply say: "No Comment".

But there you have it...…………………………….

If it happened - say it happened.

If it didn't happen - say it didn't happen.

Its an important thing called TRUTH.

My source gave me the names of the two people who were, allegedly, hurt.

One of those names in Sean Hickey from Kilkenny and the Diocese of Ossory.

SEAN HICKEY

Another is called David Dysky from Ennis and the Diocese of Kilalloe.

DAVID DYSKY

The piece below appeared in a Co. Clare parish newsletter last year:

We are all aware that there have been and still are serious concerns about Maynooth.

Those concerns caused Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to withdraw all his seminarians from Maynooth,

The question is: were these two young men - or any others - physically or psychologically hurt in Maynooth?

We should be deeply concerned about these matters.

And a "No Comment" from Eamon Martin will not suffice!

ARMAGH EX-SEMINARIAN NOW TRAINING TO BE A JOURNALIST

  1. I am sickened at the thoughts of what may have happened to these two lads and heartbroken for them both. I am also furious to put it mildly at those who allegedly caused them this trauma; and also the authorities in Maynooth under whose noses these crimes were apparently committed.

There have been no vocations in Ossory for years and years and, when they finally get one, this is what he is subjected to!

Maynooth is rotten to the core. Close it and let those responsible for the so-called “formation” there suffer ecclesiastical censure and penalties for their dereliction of duty.

I really hope these two lads will get the courage to go the police and seek justice against those who have hurt them and the neglect of those who facilitated it. This whole thing, if true, is absolutely sick and evil.

    Priest.

You say you are sickened at what "may" have happened to these seminarians, but they are allegations and have not been proven. This blog is notorious for publishing unsubstantiated allegations, I would call in the Guards to investigate and get to the truth. If they are found to be false allegations the people responsible for making them and publishing them should be prosecuted because they are truly sick and evil.

  2. In the wake of McCarrick these are very serious allegations. Are they true though? And what can really be done if the chaps themselves won’t go to the police? The way victims of sexual crimes are treated in the courts who would blame them?

    2. It seems to me that Fr Surliss needs to kick ass and blow the whistle. Bring the rotten house down. Unfortunately, though, these clerics tend to be “loyal” and “protective” towards each other at the expense of the innocent. If Fanny Mullaney is blocking anything he should be arrested too.

  8. The predator seminarian who carried out these brutal assaults on two young men was empowerd by Mullaney and Collins. Mullaney and Collins did everything to protect him despite been caught in bed with a Cork and Ross seminarian two years ago. I wonder what will Mullaney and Collins say in Court for allowing this adult to attack young men in a seminary in which there were in charge of.

  11. If these allegations are true, then these two young men should go to the relevant secular authorities and report it. However, I am sure that they are being pressured in all sorts of ways not to do so, by Church people, by their families, by their friends.....because they know that once they do so, they will get a reputation which in a small country like Ireland will be known nationwide and internet wide, and this whole business will blight their lives forever.

It is necessary, therefore, for the Church authorities themselves to take this matter very seriously and to investigate it, either with or without the assistance of these two young men. They have a duty of care not just to them, but to others like them. If, because of inaction, this same behaviour was repeated on others, then a good deal of the responsibility for that will lie with them and their inaction.

    People need to act.

The problems in Maynooth all go back to one person - Brendan Marshall. He is deeply disturbed and highly manipulative. He has systematically set out to destroy vulnerable seminarians and lay people here in Maynooth.

    6. Magna @ 18:20 No, I meant that some gay people think that someone else who displays traits they associate as being gay traits must be gay themselves and that it is therefore ok to use any means to "Liberate" them, that they will thank them later and go on to live a happy life as an "Out" gay person. Ideally a seminary or religious house should be a place where someone can be supported and grow in and into the fullness of their person but not by denigrating everything they hold holy, believe to be right generally and / or for a priest and certainly not by forced or coerced sexual conduct in the belief that once tasted they'll never want to go back and just because someone appears to be ok at being "shown their true self" does not mean they are ok, though it may take years before they discover it. 22:05 No, I don't beleive there is anything wrong with being gay either. I hope David is ok and genuinely happier for it. He has however, found himself facing a different future from that envisaged a year ago and anyone who might have set him on a course different from the one he might have himself otherwise set upon, ie a celibate gay / straight / bi priest, or the gradual discerned life away from approaching Holy Orders, need to heed our Lord's words regarding millstones.

  24. And we should also remember, Pat, that these cases - if they are true - are not isolated. As serious as they are, they are but two in a litany of abuse which has continued in Maynooth over decades. The Archbishop of Armagh must also be asked why the alleged predator in this case was allowed to continue in seminary for TWO YEARS after the Conan incident. There are also countless men who were kicked out of Maynooth or their diocese over the years because they dared to speak of the different abuses going on there. There are others who have been afraid to speak out because they fear that their bishops will kick them out of seminary - it's the whistleblowers who tend to be punished. Plus there are priests who know exactly what Maynooth is like but have been more or less silenced by their bishops.

The bishops are terrified of their whole cover-up unraveling: if they are found to have been negligent in one thing, they will have to admit that they have been negligent for decades.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, anon12.43, the "bigger picture" is important. We've known of the blind eye turned by bishops to Maynooth abuse since Fr. Gerard Mcginnity in the mid-80's.

Anonymous priest at 13.30: yes, this is horrendous. Should the bishops resign en masse? At least most of them should. Over half of them are trustees of Maynooth - if a blind eye has been turned to abuse of seminarians, then all of them should resign.

    1. I think the faithful know a lot of what is going on, but I don't think they know "exactly" - yes, the people know that Maynooth is rotten; yes, they know there has been abuse; yes, they know there has been cover-up. But I think there is an intricate web of names and reasons in which some bishops are entangled and which has not fully unraveled.

Plus, many bishops still do not believe they have to answer to anyone, and I think they are afraid that this defence will come crashing down, as it inevitably will. Just look at how many letters +Pat has sent to bishops over various matters - very few respond personally or with any great substance; not infrequently has +Pat gotten solicitor's letters in response!

That is an astonishing invasion of their privacy and a gross disregarding of their basic rights.

Who is any the better for knowing who the two chaps are, or for seeing their photographs on your blog?

You would have us believe that you “care” for these lads? That you will do anything you can to help them? The last person on this earth they will turn for help is you!

Have you any concept at all of the dynamics of how traumatised victims cope? The VERY LAST THING these two chaps need is to be dragged, without their permission, by you, into a public forum like this, where every faceless Tom, Dick and Harry can say God knows what about them and their plight!

What you have done is absolutely unconscionable and unethical.

What, God forbid, if one of these two guys was pushed over the edge by what you have done today? You would be responsible.

    YOU DO NOT PRESSURISE VICTIMS!

Part of their trauma is the removal of their autonomy and you have shown utter and callous disregard for the wellbeing of these two persons.

It’s up to them how they handle what has happened to them. They have to be in charge of that process.

It could even prove fatal for some survivors to be dragged into the public domain when they are not ready and without their express permission!

Good grief! In the interests of titilating anonymous gossips on your blog you have exposed these two lads to further psychological harm.

You have, there can be no doubt, deepened and compounded their trauma! If anything happens to either of them, you will share in the guilt.
