DALY AND POLITICS
CACKLE DALY |
Among other things those papers show that THE IRISH CATHOLIC BISHOPS were up to their necks in POLITICS.
Cackle Daly is particularly highlighted.
He tried to interfere in:
The SDLP.
Sinn Fein.
Divorce legislation in the South.
ROBIN EAMES |
He even tried to block ROBIN EAMES from becoming the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh.
Daly was a HACK for the political establishment.
SIR JOHN HERMON |
The RUC Chief Constable John Hermon told me that he was embarrassed by Daly never being away from his door.
He even insisted on giving Hermon's new wife a CATHOLIC blessing for an expectant mother in RUC HQ.
He also told me that Daly had consulted him about sending the RUC into Protestant Larne to evict me from the presbytery.
Hermon quite rightly told him to go to the civil courts and that the RUC would not get involved.
Daly was also a regular visitor to Stormont Castle and to Buckingham Palace.
He invited British politicians and senior British Army Officers to his palace for dinners.
He once asked me to give the RUC information on certain people on the Falls Road. I told him:
"DO YOU NOT THINK THERE ARE ENOUGH INFORMERS IN IRELAND WITHOUT THE PRIESTS STARTING".
Telling him that sealed my fate and led to my sacking.
Daly also blackmailed the Government into NOT amalgamating Belfast's teachers training college.
He told the government:
"IF YOU CLOSE DOWN THE CATHOLIC TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE I WILL STOP CONDEMNING THE IRA FOR YOU".
BELOW you can read what yesterday's papers revealed:
(BELFAST TELEGRAPH) BISHOP'S FURY AT "NOTHING" SDLP:
Working-class Catholics in Northern Ireland were "anti-authority and anti-everything", the late Archbishop of Armagh Cahal Daly said.
The one-time head of the Catholic Church in Ireland
blamed a deep scepticism among some of his flock on the SDLP.
In remarks made in a secret meeting in 1986 with
David Donoghue, an Irish government negotiator in Anglo-Irish talks, he said
the party, then under John Hume, had made no serious effort to challenge Sinn
Fein in Catholic ghettos.
The result was a wary response to the then
fledgling Anglo-Irish Agreement in areas such as west Belfast, according to the
former primate, Bishop of Down and Connor at the time.
Gerry Adams was "the working-class hero"
and the SDLP "count for nothing", he said.
In a meeting between then-Cardinal Tomas O Fiach and
an Irish government official in 1986, the Catholic Church leader let it be
known he was less than enthusiastic about his new ecclesiastical neighbour.
"Eames, whom he has known for years, has a
poor ecumenical record and, at the personal level, is something of a 'cold
fish'," the official reported being told by Cardinal O Fiach in a missive
to the Taoiseach's office.
The Catholic leader indicated he would have
preferred then Bishop of Derry and Raphoe James Mehaffey to take up his
opposite number in Armagh.
Lord Eames was active in Ulster Unionist circles,
said Cardinal O Fiach, but he remarked he would keep an "open mind"
about him as he appeared constructive about the recently-signed Anglo-Irish
Agreement.
Separately, then-Bishop Cathal Daly - who went on
to become Catholic Archbishop of Armagh - also confided in an Irish official in
February 1986 that he had his doubts about the new Anglican leader.
"From his time as Bishop of Derry and Raphoe,
Eames does not have a good record as an ecumenist and in private conversation
his unionist views emerge quite clearly," Bishop Daly said, according to a
note of the meeting.
The bishop hoped that Eames' responsibility for the
Church of Ireland on both sides of the border "will cause him to offer
more balanced views in future than his form to date would suggest".
"He is not certain, however, that Eames will
emulate the ecumenical standards set by (Archbishop John) Armstrong in
Armagh."
THE IRISH TIMES:
Marriage would become
‘obsolete’, bishops said
Catholic
Church leaders held five-hour meeting with taoiseach Garret FitzGerald
:
PADD
Marriage as a life-long union would become “legally
obsolete” if divorce was introduced, the Catholic bishops told taoiseach Garret
FitzGerald two weeks before the government announced its intention to hold the
referendum.
Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich, who led the church
delegation at the five-hour meeting in Dublin on April 7th, said afterwards
that the bishops were united in their belief that the introduction of even a
limited form of divorce would be harmful to society.
The high-level group at the meeting included Ó
Fiaich, archbishop of Dublin Kevin McNamara, bishop of Down & Conor Cahal
Daly, auxiliary bishop of Dublin Donal Murray, coadjutor bishop of Kildare and
Leighlin Laurence Ryan, Margaret Watchorn of the Catholic Marriage Advisory
Council, and Tom Gillen of the Irish Commission for the Laity.
The church leaders’ statement, covered widely in
the media at the time, is contained in the files of the attorney general’s
office.
In a lengthy statement drawing on the Catholic
Church’s Love is for Life document, the bishops said divorce legislation
introduced “a quite radical change” into society’s legal understanding of
marriage.
“From being defined in law as indissoluble,
marriages, all marriages, become immediately defined as dissoluble. Marriage
becomes, in legal principle, a temporary union. Marriage as a life-long union
becomes legally obsolete. A commitment for life is replaced by a legal
commitment to stay with one’s spouse unless and until one decides otherwise.”
The files also include a copy of the affidavit
sworn by anti-divorce campaigner Úna Bean Mhic Mhathúna and her husband Séamus
in their failed injunction seeking to have the divorce referendum postponed.

Cahal Daly was a small little man with a big chip on his shoulder. He suffered from SMS - Small Man Syndrome.
He was also:
- a political tool
- an informer
- full of self importance and pride.
- ruthless when it came to using his power.
- a reckless spender of Church money on very expensive designer vestments for himself.
- an ass licker to civil and church authorities
- a cover upper of abuse including the abuse of Brendan Smyth.
During his lifetime he managed to fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time.
But as more and more is revealed about his petty little politics and vindictiveness his real character will be revealed.
During my last meeting with him - in October 1985 - which lasted 4 hours I ended up by telling him:
"CAHAL, DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?
FROM YOUR DAYS IN THE CRADLE YOU WERE SPOILED ROTTEN AND EVERYONE SAID "YES" TO YOU.
I AM THE FIRST MAN TO TELL YOU A BIG "NO" TO YOUR FACE
AND LIKE THE SPOILED LITTLE CHILD THAT YOU ARE YOU ARE THROWING YOUR RATTLE OUT OF THE PRAM".
He was incandescent with rage!
DIARMUID MARTIN APPOINTED PATRIARCH OF TURKEY
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin put his head up a Turkey's jacksie at Christmas party for Dublin's homeless.
How many Powers and Cigars had he had.
The head of the Catholic Church in Ireland.
Eat your heart out Mr Bean.
You have been replaced by His Grace Archbishop Bean !!!
His Christmas message is entitled: Gobble- amus, Gobble- amus, Gobble- amus.

I never saw Daly other than on a TV prog where some issue affecting catholicism was being discussed. He made an immediate and lasting impression on me which I vividly recall, now probably at least 20 years later.
ReplyDeleteA vituperative little shrew of a man so utterly convinced in his own opinionated view as to be oblivious to any others. He had a very obvious puffed up dismissive arrogance I found repulsive.
MMM
Pat, any confirmation or update on Pry-er's dethronement?
ReplyDeleteHimself and the ginger wanna be psychologist were seen sobbing in Cafe Bon Bon
Delete12 17. Were they really? I don't even know them. Worse than home and away or neighbours which I haven't watched for years. Sad if this is the calibre of the modern clergyperson. I suppose the church has desuaded clergy interacting with the public in a so-called normal fashion.
DeleteGoes to show that Church like politics can have a hidden agenda. Going forward how can we assure transparency?. How much old wheeling and dealing remains uncovered u
ReplyDeleteA lot....
DeleteA lot....
DeleteThe truth is now Out. Daly Was a scoundrel and a scumbag. He clearly damaged priests and people. I know one Priest personally who is still very troubled by Daly's behaviour towards him when in Armagh and refuses to talk about it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many other priests would have liked to say to Daly's face what you, Bishop Pat, said to him that October day in 1985.
ReplyDeleteI bet many of them took some satisfaction in knowing that at least one of their number had the b*lls to do it.
A throwaway thought. How many bishops priests were tolerated as eccentric because of who they were. My mother and I presume many of her generation were in awe of the bishop because of the ring and hat. Brother Collumban in Castlerea was revealed for his prowess with the cane in the national school...
ReplyDeleteI can assure Magna Carta that on the evening of Pat confronting Daly in St Peter's the phones wires between parochial houses were red hot. Although some in the presbyterate though Pat mad, some thought him bad the majority secretly admired him for having the balls.
ReplyDeleteWhatsmore a classmate of mine told me shortly before he died that in all his years of priesthood it provided him with his best and biggest laugh. I still fall about laughing all these years later when I think of CBD's face.
D&C Retired
For the record:
DeleteI stood in front of Daly on three occasions to protest at his refusal to be reconciled with me while at the same time he was preaching about reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.
The first time was at his Midnight Mass in the Mater Hospital Chapel on 24.12.1985.
I did not interrupt Mass. I just stood in front of him when he was preaching.
At the Mater I wore my cassock to hide my shaking legs.
After my protest I cam outside and vomited behind my car on the Crumlin Road.
The second occasion was the one mentioned in St Peter's. Daly's face was red with rage.
The third occasion was at the January 1986 Ecumenical Service for Christian Unity in St Bernadette's Church in Belfast.
After I stood in front of him preaching one of my Larne parishioners went to the microphone to make a statement. She was shoulder butted by a D&C priest.
When I learned that Daly had appointed 6 heavies to assist him at every Mass after that I stopped my protest.
I had no desire to have my protest descend into physical violence.
I'm in awe of your courage and tenacity. What you did on those occasions (especially the first, at the Mater) took uncommon nerve.
DeleteI can imagine Daly in Purgatory offering up a massive 'mea culpa' for his ill-treatment of you.
Be merciful to him, Bishop Pat. Ask him to pray for you that he might have opportunity to expiate his sins against you.
In recent years I have been able to pray for and about him.
DeleteGood for you. That must have been incredibly difficult.
DeleteYou are not just courageous, but honest and compassionate, too. I should expect nothing less of Bishop Pat Buckley.
Who was the brave DC priest who shoulder butted a woman?
ReplyDeleteFather - later Canon - Brendan Murray.
DeleteMagna Carta,
ReplyDeleteI find it very difficult to categorise your personality - venomous at one moment and peculiarly charming at the next.
Could it be possible that you suffer from a type of spiritual schizophrenia?
What is your personal opinion?
Could you possibly be physically perilous to anyone?
Why should you want to categorise my personality? Do you feel compelled to place people in psychological or spiritual boxes?
DeleteI suspect the word you were looking for is 'sociopath': venomous one moment, charming the next. Empathetic? Not a bit of it. The acid-bath murderer John Haig comes to mind. But no, I'm not a sociopath.
As for 'spiritual schizophrenia ', I think you should have suggested spiritual multiple personality instead. But then, isn't this the classic definition of 'sinner'? Someone occasionally good, occasionally bad. I am no exception.
By the way, I don't suffer fools gladly. And I've run into a few exceptional fools recently on this blog. Sometimes I ignore fools, but if they're pack-hunting, I enjoy making verbal trophies of them. Perhaps I shouldn't, but then, I did say I was a sinner.
Physically perilous? I am a pacifist by moral conviction, but not by nature. So please don't come at me with a knife while I have a shotgun, because, well, it would be very silly thing to do.
Good or bad, for goodness sake let the dead rest Pat.
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't be too happy at hatred and scorn towards a loved one from your family!
As low as it gets!
This nonsense of "Not speaking of the Dead" is crazy.
DeleteWe should praise good dead people for their goodness.
We should criticise bad dead people for their badness.
Cahal Daly made himself a public figure and interfered in politics and social life.
We have a right to debate his legacy.
Agreed.
DeletePat history will remember Bishop (Cardinal) Daly as one of the great Irish Churchmen of the centuries. He graced the Irish Church and Nation with his outstanding intellect and manifest goodness. In fact history already remembers this very humble man in this way. He touched the lives of many countless men and women in his service to Church and State. You are completely wrong in your assessment of the late Cardinal and the horrible things that you have said about him, and have allowed to be posted on your site about him. I have no doubt you will not publish this post, but you need to know that your personal animus towards the man has clouded your judgment. Whatever Cahal Brendan Daly did he did for Holy Mother Church. History will thank him for that. How, I wonder will it remember you Pat, if at all?
ReplyDeleteI do not know how you can use the word humble and Daly in the same sentence.
DeleteHe was an aggressive little toe rag.
But see - I have published your comment!
How did Daly grace 'the Irish Church and Nation (sic) with his outstanding intellect'?
DeleteI can't believe I'm reading this horse manure about Daly being humble. OMG, are we talking about the same person here? He was a controlling, vindictive little pip squeak of a man. The Press yesterday revealed who he truly was. He stabbed John Hume and the SDLP in the back. He had an awful temper and resented with venom that Gerry Adams was regarded as a hero.
DeleteHe regarded the working class of West Belfast as low life and would quite easily have discarded them like an oily rag. He reduced grown men to tears behind closed doors and humiliated them. Where was the Christianity in any of that?. A wee vile man from the Glens who enjoyed the power over people and destroyed many a life in the process.
He treated his man servant like scum, he even protested that Robin Eames was not a suitable man for Armagh. The only credit I give Dr. Ian Paisley for is calling Cahal Daley, "the red hatted weasel".
By the way there is a few N. Ireland comedians now using your blog Pat for gags in relation to Fr. X and his DUP teenage lover and Arlene on fire.
Magna Carta justifies his conceitedness with the following revelation;
ReplyDelete'By the way, I don't suffer fools gladly. And I've run into a few exceptional fools recently on this blog. Sometimes I ignore fools, but if they're pack-hunting, I enjoy making verbal trophies of them.'
Is this 'Mr T' from the 'A' Team 'pack-hunting' on this blog? He was always mouthing about not, "suffering fools gladly" and being on the "hunt for trophies?!!" Listen MC, or is it Fr T ?!! - I suggest you change blogs to avoid us 'exceptional fools' !!! Relax MC and have a Happy New Year - greetings to you too Pat!!
Happy New Year to you, too. (See? I'm not all bad, am I?)
DeleteDon't flatter yourself, Mags, daaahling - you are letting your inflated ego get the better of you, duchess.
DeleteYou are not really as bright as you might like to think.
The only "trophies" you make are in your own delusional, conceited and very fertile imagination.
01:37, and a happy New Year to you as well!
DeleteHappy New Year, Lady Carta LOL
DeletePat, I never liked it and felt uneasy when Cardinal Daly made cheap nasty comments in Ara Coeli to select Clergy. One comment was he was thrilled that there was no longer any IRA Cardinal in residence.
ReplyDeleteAnother cheap jibe he kept spouting whilst laughing out loud was that it takes a Co. Antrim man to sort things out in Armagh. He said the people from South Armagh had no Intelligence or gumption to do the job. Nasty man.
Retired Armagh PP
He also called Tomas O Fiaich "an intellectual light weight".
DeleteO Fiaich was 100 times the man Daly was.
Tomas, despite some criticism, was I think the best Armagh had in my life time. He always had a smile for You, a very pastoral, warm and caring man. He always had a tray of sandwiches ready and a bottle of whisky on the table. I was very humbled once when he asked me to hear his Confession. He was one thousand times the man Cahal Daly was. He was truly horrible to Priests who took an opposing view. It was absolutely awful to witness it.
ReplyDeleteRetired Armagh PP
Tomas O Fiaich welcomed ne to Ara Coeli and was friendly and hospitable.
DeleteI liked him.
The only blot on his book was his failure to protect Fr Gerard Mc Ginnity from Cahal & Co.
Gentlemen, gentlemen can we not not stop this sniping and remember that this very night is the anniversary of the man's death. He will have had to give an account of his every action and decision before the JUDGMENT of the Merciful Father, just as each one of you, and I will. Speak no ill of the dead!
ReplyDeleteSpeak no ill of the dead. What planet are you on. Oul Irish superstition at its best. Who actually said speak no ill of the dead. Get a life.
ReplyDelete23:07... Hopefully no one ever mocks or speaks wrong about your dead!
DeleteI've an excellent good life my friend!
God bless you.
Regardless of what Daly was or wasn't, I still like the look of Paul Prior........I think he's sexy! Anyone else think so?
ReplyDeleteNo-- 'fraid not!
DeleteI think you need bigger glasses than Daly.
DeletePrior is a creepy and dangerous little weasel.
May the Bishops act like real leaders and follow his ejection with Mullaney and Collins as well as many on the present faculty.
Tomas O'Fiach was the warmest person I've ever met. And he had a remarkable memory and recall of people's names. I remember him and Cardinal Glemp from Poland processing up the College Chapel in Maynooth at Saturday vespers one time. Both as broad as they were tall. RIP Tomas.
ReplyDeleteHe stuck the knife in Fr McGinnity. He betrayed him.
DeleteI think the correct term for you magna is a troll. Are you a gay priest or seminarian, or an ex seminarian that got the boot?
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR, HUN!
