GAY SEMINARIES - THE EFFECTS

GAY SEMINARIES - THE EFFECTS

AN INTERESTING OVERVIEW

A Vatican document of 1961 bars persons with homosexual orientation from ordination and religious vows. However, this document appears to have been almost completely ignored.

It is important to keep in mind that the vast majority of priests, with a heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual orientation, do not molest or sexually abuse young people.

Some definitions:

We will most frequently use the rather awkward term "person with a homosexual orientation," in this essay to avoid confusion. Terms like "Gay" and "homosexual," are ambiguous.

bullet
To many conservative Christians, homosexuality is interpreted in terms of behaviour. A homosexual is a person who engages in same-sex behaviour.

bullet
To most others, including religious liberals, gays, lesbians, human sexuality researchers, and mental health therapists, homosexuality is interpreted in terms of sexual orientation. The term refers to a person who is attracted to persons of the same gender. A homosexual may choose to be celibate, or may be sexually active.

horizontal rule
What percentage of seminary students have a homosexual orientation?

As noted in an essay on priests with a homosexual orientation in the Roman Catholic priesthood, estimates range from "perhaps more than 10%" to 58%. It is generally recognised that a larger percentage of seminary students than priests have a homosexual orientation. However, nobody knows with any degree of accuracy.

Men with a homosexual orientation might be attracted to the Roman Catholic priesthood for a variety of reasons:

bullet
Most probably feel deeply that they have a definite calling by God to become priests.
bullet
Some may be attracted by the "caring and nurturing nature of the priesthood, which is part of the nature of ministry.
bullet
The current bar against marriage for priests has no inhibiting influence, as it does among potential priests with a heterosexual orientation.
bullet
Priests are generally respected by the public. Being ordained gives homosexuals instant relief from the persecution that they had experienced as laity.
bullet
The priesthood gives them protection from homophobia and the potential of physical assault. Much of the public assumes that many middle-aged and older men who have never been married are gay. Thus, the priesthood becomes a safe place to hide their sexual orientation.
bullet
The Roman Catholic priesthood may be attractive to persons with a homosexual orientation because, at this time, is an all-male institution. They would feel comfortable there.
bullet
Some seminary students might be attracted by the homosexual sub-culture of most seminaries -- a culture that is probably not present in schools that train for other professions.
bullet
It is possible that some predatory candidates for the priesthood might seek ordination because it would give them a position of power over the laity and give them access to many children.

At this time, the Roman Catholic Church does not normally exclude male candidates for seminary because they have a homosexual orientation. The one exception is believed to be St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. 3 At least one seminary, University of St. Mary of the Lake, IL, a.k.a. Mundelein Seminary, accepts students with a homosexual orientation, but not those who admit to frequenting gay bars.  However, while in seminary and after ordination, all students are expected to remain celibate.

With the church's current requirement of priestly chastity, seminaries are having difficulty recruiting heterosexuals to the priesthood.

bullet
Father Donald Cozzens wrote that several studies have concluded that about 50% of priests and seminarians are gay. 5
bullet
David France of Newsweek, referring to St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, CA, wrote: "Depending on whom you ask, gay and bisexual men make up anywhere from 30 percent to 70 percent of the student body at the college and graduate levels.3
bullet
Rt. Rev. Helmut Hefner, rector of St. Johns Seminary "accepts that his gay enrollment may be as high as 50 percent.3
bullet
Gay journalist Rex Wockner commented: "When I was in the Catholic seminary in my early 20s (St. Meinrad College, St. Meinrad, Ind., 1982-1983; University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Ill., 1983-1984), at least 50 percent of the students were gay....At St. Mary of the Lake, the straight students felt like a minority and felt excluded from some aspects of campus life to such an extent that the administration staged a seminar at which we discussed the problem of the straight students feeling left out of things...6
bullet
Author and sociologist James G. Wolfe estimated that 55.1% of seminarians were gay. 7
bullet
Bishop Jerome Listecki is an auxiliary bishop of Chicago, rejects some estimates that as many as 50% of seminarians have a homosexual orientation. 3
It would seem that about 50% of present-day seminary students may have a homosexual orientation.

Does the gay sub-culture in seminaries affect heterosexual seminarians?

Many priests and theologians have commented about the gay sub-cultures in Catholic seminaries:

bullet
An anonymous priest from the Boston area commented in an interview with Joe Fitzgerald of the Boston Herald: "there's a subculture of gay priests and everyone knows it. I went through seminary with a lot of them and got hit on. And when I reported it, I was harassed to a point where, emotionally, it was very difficult to get ordained. I'm not the only one who had to fight to get through it; I know guys who left because of it. It was clear there was a cabal tacitly saying, 'Don't bother reporting this stuff.' You wouldn't believe the self-justifications, like, 'Well, celibacy only applies to not getting married, so since we're not getting married we can do whatever we want.' It was horrible, with a lot of intimidation, but I stayed because I felt this was what God was calling me to do; besides, if I'd walked, they'd have won.

bullet
Father McBrien, a theologian at the University of Notre Dame, commented that some seminary students "...who feel they have a genuine vocation for priesthood go into a seminary and feel very alienated by the gay culture. I don't say this in any homophobic sense. It's just the reality."

bullet
Pope John Paul II held a meeting with the American cardinals which dealt with the clerical sex scandals. Afterward, Bishop Wilton Gregory, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said: "One of the difficulties we do face in seminary life or recruitment is made possible when there does exist a homosexual atmosphere or dynamic that makes heterosexual men think twice [about entering.] It is an ongoing struggle to make sure the Catholic priesthood is not dominated by homosexual men."

bullet
R. Scott Appleby, a history professor at Notre Dame, said: "People I know quite well have left the seminary either in disgust because people are not keeping vows, or in alienation because they’re not gay. In some cases it’s a serious problem."

bullet
The Most Rev. Wilton Gregory said: "[T]here does exist a homosexual atmosphere or dynamic that makes heterosexual men think twice."

bullet
The Rev. Charles Bouchard, president of the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis said: "I think straight priests and seminarians shouldn’t be whining. I just don’t think it’s a big deal."

bullet
Father Donald Cozzens wrote: "What impact does the gay subcultue have on the straight priest and seminarian?....straight men in a predominantly or significantly gay environment commonly experience chronic destabilisation, a common symptom of which is self doubt...Their psychic confusion, understandably, has significant implications for both their spiritual vitality and emotional balance."

bullet
Timothy Radcliffe, Master of the Order of Preachers, commented on the emergence of a homosexual sub-culture within a seminary or religious order: "It can threaten the unity of the community; it can make it harder for the brethren to practice the chastity which we have vowed. It can put pressure on brethren to think of themselves in a way that is not central to their vocation as preachers of the Kingdom..."

Lesbian nuns fall in love, renounce vows and get married

SPONSORED BY THE MAYNOOTH GRINDRS ASSOCIATION

The Maynooth Grindrs Association would like to offer their warm congratulations to Sister Federica and Sister Isabel who left the convent and were married in a civil ceremony this past week in Italy.

The MGA's Stephanie Winston told this Blog:

"We in the MGA would like more priests, nuns and seminarians to fall in love and go public. We are petitioning the Irish Bishops to allow Maynooth seminarians who fall in love to have a vivil marriage in the College Chapel - so that they will not be living in sin and so that we will no longer have to look for sex on sites like GRINDR and FABGUYS".

·

Two former Catholic nuns who renounced their vows after falling in love with each other have married.
The pair tied the knot in Italy, following the country’s decision to pass a new civil union bill, which legalises same-sex unions .
Federica and Isabel fell in love three years during a mission in South America.
They belonged to the Franciscan order, which follows the disciplines of Saint Francis of Assisi.
However, they were forced to give up their place in the order after they fell in love, as the Catechism continues to teach that homosexuality is ‘disordered’.
“God wants people to be happy,” Federica told La Stampa.
“We call upon our church to welcome all people who love each other.”
The wedding took place in the northern town of Pinerolo on September 28th, after the pair were forced to adjust their plans to protect their privacy.
They also received a religious blessing from ex-priest Franco Barbero, who left the church after he challenged its approach to the LGBT community

He described Federica and Isabel’s story as “like all the love stories in the world”.

  1. Pat, what IS this crusade about exactly? Are you so desperate to keep up the readership numbers on your blog that you continue day after day to pander to the homophobic prejudices of your Alt-Right readership (who read the blog only to fish out information they can use to advance a questionable cause)? Or has your crusade against the Church reached such a level that day after day you consider it a good idea to implicitly question the integrity of the (yes, many) priests who are gay and who do an excellent job? Are they second class priests or seminarians, not up to the level of the straight ones?

Your dislike of the institution and the hurt it clearly has caused you appears to have trumped any compassion or consideration for clergy or seminarians who are in this position, and indeed any theological nuance on the issue. All I am seeing now in your posts is McQuaid's witch hunting Ireland. Given your own experience, one might have hoped for better. It is hugely disappointing. One might have hoped for some detail on "Yes there are gay priests and seminarians. Nothing to see here. What is the issue?". And no, I am not talking about sexually active ones, just the orientation.

Yes, seminaries should not be hotbeds of sexual intrigue and that subculture is very destructive, but I think it is time you regain some balance in your perspective. An internet culture of gossip is just as destructive, however one might try to justify it to oneself - you are probably going to claim that it is the teaching you are attacking but in reality it isn't - you are attacking innocent men. And if gay seminarians were not allowed, you would not be a bishop today.

  2. Thank you cor your comment and your challenge.

I believe that men who are gay can be and should be priests. I know a small number of gay priests who are excellent priests.

    The burning issues are:

The Gay Cabal in Maynooth and other seminaries who are highly active on gay sex sites.

The targeting of straight seminarians and seminarians who are "chaste" by this Gay Cabal.

The misbehaviour of seminary staff surrounding the whole area of sexuality.

The inaction of the Irish Bishops.

The effects that all of the above is having on others - up to the point of suicide!

Certain people want all this BURIED.

The Blog is trying to stop them burying these vital issues.

  4. Pat, thanks for your response, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I agree with what you have written above. My concern is that when I am reading the comments made on your posts, I see many who are using your material for objectives very different to your purposes. I would like to see THEIR prejudices challenged.

Many of these people seem to think that a Vatican directive (they change all the time as they do not express doctrine) is an expression of theological truth, whereas it seems to me that any Vatican directive banning gay chaste priests is easily challenged on theological grounds (based as they are on ridiculous notions that gay men lack a sense of fatherhood and that straight men 'give up' married life, whereas in reality they give up a mere theoretical possibility; the 2005 directive assumes that homosexual tendencies can be 'overcome' whereas science is emphatic that this is not the case - etc etc etc). Also they are mere administrative measures, not the expression of magisterial teaching.

So while I do commend your purpose, I am still concerned that we need some leadership to show another side of this story and to stand up for priests and seminarians on the margins (as I am aware you have done in the past).

  6. Pat, what about your own college? I would say the only thing that was not there at that time was the internet. 25 years ago the mags were available to pick up men and the little hotrooms in Dublin. Men's sex drive is always there, they are just using what is available to satisfy their own needs. I would agree with you 100% that the chaste students should not be bullied that it is horrible, this has to stop.

  7. No need to thank me :-) I regard it as a duty to acknowledge and respond to very rational challenges like your own.

There are many comments that appear on the Blog that I personally disagree with - just as I disagree with the agenda behind those comments.

But I think we have to allow people to express their ideas and when those ideas are irrational or homophobic there need to be challenged by myself, yourself and more enlightened readers.

As you indicated in your first comment - I am a priest and bishop who is gay ( not a gay priest or bishops :-) ) Sexual orientation and priesthood are not really connected/

There are many gay priests who are much better priests than their straight counterparts.

It would be nice if such a gay priest posted a Blog here making that point.

Do you know anyone who would - anonymously of course if they wished.

  8. I was in two seminaries - Clonliffe, Dublin and St John's in Waterford.

When there - 1970 - 1976 - I never saw any gay pornography at all. And if I had seen it I would have been off to confession like a flash :-)

But homosexuality was rife in Clonliffe in the 1970's.

And there was a little bit of it in Waterford.

  11. Sam, Many of the pictures on the Blog are illustrative but Wikipedia has the following on gay Catholic bishops

    Roman Catholic Church

The official position of the Roman Catholic church is that bishops must remain celibate, and that homosexuality is a "grave disorder". Therefore, revelations in the Catholic church concerning the sexual orientation of senior clergy have tended to be as a result of local scandal, amid revelations of sexual abuse.

Randy Engel has documented many of these scandals, and also discusses Cardinal Spellman's homosexual proclivities.

Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, a retired Catholic bishop in the Diocese of Detroit, has consistently been a supporter of New Ways Ministry and has also called for homosexual priests and bishops to "come out" and be truthful to themselves and others.

Gumbleton has acted as a keynote speaker at Call to Action conferences. In 1995 he wore a mitre at a church service on which were symbols of the cross, a rainbow and a pink triangle in solidarity with the gay community. Later, he came into the public eye before the Vatican's Instruction with regard to the ordination of homosexual men was released, arguing against Fr. Baker's article on the issue in America.

    Francis Cardinal Spellman

Francis Spellman, Cardinal Archbishop of New York (died 1967) was long rumoured to have been gay, according to a book by John Cooney, who said that many whom he interviewed took his homosexuality for granted.[36] In addition, a book published in 1998 claims that during World War II, Spellman was carrying on a relationship with a chorus boy in the Broadway revue One Touch of Venus.[37] Spellman defended Senator Joseph McCarthy's 1953 investigations of subversives and homosexuals in the federal government.

Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee, Wisconsin retired on May 24, 2002 following the revelation that he had used $450,000 in archdiocesan funds to settle a lawsuit accusing him of sexual harassment. In a statement one week later, he admitted the falsity of his previous assertion that income he had earned outside of his priestly occupation (and turned over to the Church) exceeded the $450,000. In 2009 he confirmed that he was gay, but did not reveal any details of his relationships.
The auxiliary Roman Catholic Bishop of Cape Town, South Africa, Reginald Cawcutt, resigned in July 2002 following allegations that he outed himself as gay on a sometimes-sexually charged website set up for gay priests. Bishop Reginald Cawcutt blamed the scandal on the conservative U.S. organization Roman Catholic Faithful which infiltrated the now closed website, called St. Sebastian's Angels, and traced posting addresses.

In 2003, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër was removed from office by John Paul II for alleged sexual misconduct with younger men who were students in his care. Officially, the Pope accepted the resignation letter which Groër had written on the occasion of his 75th birthday. This made Groër, who had adamantly refused to ever comment in public on the allegations, one of the highest-ranking Catholic clerics to become caught up in the sexual abuse scandals.
In 2005, Juan Carlos Maccarone, the Bishop of Santiago del Estero in Argentina was forced to resign after images were released of him engaged in sexual activity with another man. Suggestion was made that the former state governor Carlos Juarez had been involved in the release after criticism of the governor's human rights record.

Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira, the Bishop of Minas in Uruguay was forced to resign in July 2009, following a gay sex scandal in which he had faced extortion.

Most recently in February 2013, Cardinal Keith O'Brien (leader of the Catholic church in Scotland) was forced to resign as archbishop three months ahead of planned retirement because of allegations of inappropriate acts with four priests during the 1980s, but also more recently. O'Brien had been a vocal critic of the UK Government's plans to introduce same-sex marriage.

  13. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin hasn't pulled his seminarians out of Maynooth based on hearsay. He admitted live on RTE television that seminarians in Maynooth were using Grindr and that there was a "growing, unhealthy atmosphere" there. DM is a liberal, so things must be bad for him to withdraw his seminarians from Maynooth.

Fr Chris Derwin, a recently ordained Maynooth priest for the Dublin Archdiocese, was on Grindr trying to befriend underage men. He is being moved from his present parish after being there only one year. Fr David Marsden walked out of Maynooth because of the way the young Derry seminarian, having caught two other seminarians in bed, was treated. Deacon Sean Jones and Deacon Michael Byrne were on Grindr.

There is a vicious homosexual culture tearing Maynooth apart. The present number of seminarians there speaks for itself. The place is dying a slow death.

The non-stop smoke billowing from Maynooth indicates a very big fire indeed.

Constant lies and obfuscation can no longer hide the truth.

I was ordained a Catholic priest in 1976.

In 1986 I had a dispute with the bishop - Cahal Daly and began my independent catholic ministry.

In 1998 I was consecrated a bishop without a papal mandate by two other catholic bishops.

I am gay and in 2010 I had a Civil Partnership (not a marriage) - which still extsts.

I regard myself as an independent catholic bishop and priest - ie: not in communion with Rome

  24. As Christians in the real world it is not enough to make grand ethereal statements concerning Gospel values. Sometimes we have to get our hands dirty and make a stand against evil. And it is evil what is happening in Maynooth. Genuine vocations to the priesthood are being weeded out, and despicable cunning liars are being ordained. It is not enough that good men are leaving or being asked to leave, but also that these men are being castigated as liars, trouble-makers, etc. It is even all the more revolting that the liars entrenched in Maynooth attempt to deny plain, pictorial evidence.

I don't know Pat perhaps it's time you set up a support group for those with 'sense of humour deficits'to help them free themselves from their terminal seriousness, it's one of the first thing that those who peddle nonsense and untruth would like to curtail, i.e., prevent people satirising and laughing at what they want to pretend is gospel, humour and satire are essential weapons against indoctrination and fascism! I sincerely hope you are not referring to our dear Sister Mary Stephania Winton?? That's not very respectful of you, is it? Calling Sr Steph by a boy's name??

Sr Stephania is a devoted young nun who serves the staff and students of Gaynooth with selfless dedication.

A former air hostess, you will hear the reassuring trundle of her little trolley, along the cloisters and corridors, day and night.

How soothing to hear the 'rattle, clink-clink', of her wares on wheels, should you find yourself with the longing for a few bottles in the middle of the day or night.

Are you gasping for a fag at 3am? Just a quick text will summon Sr from her humble cell. Her little cart is ever a welcome sight, laden as it also is, with marvellous and surprising toys, that never fail to thrill and delight.

Sr Steph spends her time here most fruitfully: As well as being secretary to the MGA, she is also president of the Mile High Club Praesidium of the Legio Mariae.

When not servicing staff and students with her trolley of delights, she is to be found on her knees, in the Oratory, going through her book of novenas, asking God to send her a suitable husband.

Having a particular devotion to St Anne, Sr Steph's favourite ejaculation is: "St Anne! St Anne! Send me a man as fast as you can!"

  42. Pat, the satire is funny, keep it up. And keep publishing comments from those who don't get it so we can continue to laugh at them! But is permitting the publication of posts mocking that guy (not to mention the doxing) the Christian thing to do? Have you information that he has been up to 'strange goings on'? If not, it's morally indefensible. And even if he is up to strange goings on, I am not sure he doesn't have a right to have his private life respected and the matters dealt with in a better way. (yes, yes, I know that the Mismanagement of Maynooth is utterly useless...). This is not free speech; it's malice. Though I suspect that Anonymous at 17.17 might have suffered a rejection given the apparent intimate knowledge of his subject matter and the tone of bitterness that shines through....

    1. Anon at 19:45, no "rejection" I can assure you. Don't swing that way. Just absolutely disgusted at the debacle that is Gaynooth from up close to it and frustrated at the lack of decisive action by those with responsibility. Ridicule and satire vents some of that frustration. You should try it.

  43. Question 2: Do you masturbate?
    Answer: Yes

Vocations Director: As a man regularly engaging in mortal sin, you will fit right in at Maynooth. Failte!

I would certainly hope this questionnaire would address the vexed question of masturbation. Imagine, a straight seminarian (let's leave aside the intrinsically disordered homosexuals for now and deal only with that other form of intrinsically disordered sexuality, masturbation) goes off and masturbates, and before he had truly repented and gone to confession and received sacramental absolution, he is run over by a bus and killed. Well according to the version of Catholic doctrine which holds that homosexuality is 'intrinsically disordered' and that such types cannot enter the seminary, that straight seminarian is now in hell, having died in a state of mortal sin, given that masturbation is a gravely sinful act. It would be great if the vocations director could weed out the mortal sinning w****** early on.

  45. You do know that any young person reading here might actually think it sinful to masturbate.
Why are so many posters obsessed with sexual matters.it can't be a healthy way of being.

    1. As a teenager I was told in confession by a priest that everytime a man masturbates he wipes out 250,000 people.

It was like being told that I was responsible for actions worse than Hitlers !!!

  46. Homosexual tendencies can be overcome. This phrase betrays a multitude. Celibacy for hetrosexual folk implies the hetrosexual tendencies can be overcome. The world of science has opened up the whole area of sexual orientation. Let the shite be thrown out along with the flat world theory. The bottom line is that mature adults be appropriate in sexual expression. The ordination ceremony needs to be amended to reflect modern society. The church is living a lie by saying one thing and doing another. In the old days many families had a black sheep in the fold. How many black priests-no racial pun intended-do our dioceses have in their folds

  52. Before they are ordained seminarians who are in their early twenties and wish to be fully commited to a lifetime of celibacy should be asked if they would like to submit to being castrated. There is no need for an invasive medical procedure as a simple veterinary instrument called a Burdizzo can be used. It is a bloodles, simple and extremely quick method of castration. When I was in America I assisted at the castration of a number of young men in their twenties for a religious cult using this method. A priest could be trained in its use of a Burdizzo. Maybe the young seminarians could be castrated at a special private ceremoney attended only by priests, religious and invited friends of the young men.. A dais could be placed in front of the High Alter. The seminarian who would at this stage be mildly sedated would be be invited to approach the High Alter and and accend the dais. Assistants to the castrating priest would open the lower half of the white robe of the young man and place him face downwards in the correct position on the dais. His thighs should be spread as wide apart as possible so that the castrating priest has clear access to his testicles. Discreetly placed clasps should be attached to each ankle and arm and secured to the dais. The castrating priest should always use a full size Burdizzo, i.e. ( a No. 18 Burdizzo with 7" jaws and 26" handles ) as the seminarian may have large balls and he would have great difficulty closing a small Burdizzo on very thick spermatic cords. Once the castrating priest hears a crushing sound as he closes the Burdizzo fully he knows that that he has done thing right. All and all it should take less then two minutes to castrate the young man. No how well he is sedated the seminarian may scream as he is being castrated. All for Jesus.

    1. I see that this blog has entered the world of satire. Castrating a fully grown young man in his early twenties with a Burdizzo while only mildly sedated is a cruel thing to do. I recommend that the young man should be stunned by hitting him over the head with a mallet. The church could make a lot of money out of the ceremony by offering the television rights to Sky. That would stop the auld ones from going all over the country hoping for a look at Nathan Carter's cock. They could watch that instead.
