Raymond Hunthausen, the consummate 'Vatican II bishop,' dies at 96
So-called Catholic liberals lionized him while traditionalists bemoaned him as the epitome of a 'wishy-washy' type of Catholicism

Vatican City
No prophet is welcomed in his own country…
And Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen experienced that in two countries, actually – the United States (his place of birth) and the Roman Catholic Church (his spiritual home).
Raymond Gerhardt Hunthausen, who died on Sunday in his native Montana, earned the prophet’s reward (or curse) because of his radical Gospel stance of inclusivity and non-violence.
He was just one month shy of his 97th birthday.
Hunthausen was best known from his time as Archbishop of Seattle (1975-1991), a period that was marked by dramatic ecclesial and political changes around the world.
Commonly known as “Dutch” by friends and colleagues, he was the last surviving U.S. bishop to attend the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). In fact, he attended all four sessions of that monumental gathering, having been appointed Bishop of Helena (Montana) in the summer before the council got underway.
Just 40 years old, he was the youngest American bishop at the time and the last ever to be appointed in the pre-Vatican II era.
He would say that attending Vatican Council II changed him, calling the experience “liberating… challenging and exciting.”
It was, he said, “a grace and a blessing.” By the time he was Archbishop of Seattle, his name had become synonymous with the council, especially as Pope John Paul II began curtailing the great synod’s reforms.
So-called Catholic liberals in the United States lionized Hunthausen as the pre-eminent “Vatican II bishop,” while traditionalists bemoaned him as the epitome of a “wishy-washy” type of Catholicism they believed the council had produced.
As John Paul began to reshape the U.S. hierarchy by appointing more doctrinally rigid bishops to major dioceses, Hunthausen came increasingly under pressure from church conservatives for offering the sacraments to divorced and remarried Catholics, welcoming gays and lesbians in his cathedral, allowing general absolution and promoting greater ecumenical and interfaith collaboration.
And during the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the height of the Cold War, it was his pacifism and staunch resistance to nuclear weapons that drew the ire of the Republican leaders in the U.S. capital.
The archbishop joined protests in the early 1980s when the first Trident nuclear submarine arrived in Puget Sound just 20 miles from downtown Seattle. He became a cause célèbre when he announced he would withhold half of his federal income tax until the nukes were removed.
Reagan appealed to other more conservative American cardinals and officials at the Vatican to lean on the Seattle archbishop. It is believed the U.S. president’s interventions actually helped convince John Paul that Hunthausen needed to be reined in.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, drew up “charges” in 1985 that accused the archbishop of deviating from the Catholic faith.
Shortly afterward the pope appointed a Pittsburgh priest named Donald Wuerl as the archbishop’s auxiliary bishop, secretly giving the newly ordained prelate special powers over several areas of pastoral governance in Seattle.
But Hunthausen was no pushover. He became resolute when he perceived Bishop Wuerl had overstepped his mandate and threatened to publicly disclose the full details of the Vatican’s arrangement to curtail his authority. The archbishop prevailed.
“Wuerl was like a boy who had been sent to do a man’s job,” the late Bishop James Hoffman of Toledo (Ohio) once told me. Dutch was still the archbishop and he knew his rights.
In the end, a compromise had to be worked out. Wuerl was sent back to Pittsburgh less than a year and half after he began his Vatican-backed mission. He served briefly as seminary rector before taking over as the Bishop of Pittsburgh in early 1988.
Meanwhile, Hunthausen was saddled with a coadjutor bishop and finally stepped down in 1991 at age 70, five years prior to the normal retirement age.
I met Archbishop Hunthausen only once. It was in the midst of the Vatican’s attempted takeover of his archdiocese and he had come to give a talk to faculty and staff at St. Meinrad College.
He spoke mostly of his conviction that peaceful resistance was the only Christian response to war. He was unwaveringly anti-war and anti-nukes.
Afterwards in the question and answer period some of the students pilloried him for being naïve. He only smiled, patiently withstanding the barrage.
He had put up with much more from people with greater authority in the church, those who should have shown gratitude for the work he did for humanity and all believers.
Indeed, Raymond Hunthausen was a prophet. May he rest in peace and may others carry forward his legacy.
PAT SAYS:
I had the great pleasure of having a long telephone conversation with Archbishop Hunthausen one evening when he was being persecuted by the Vatican and others.
I rang him to give my support and the promise of my prayers.
He warned me to be careful about what I said because his telephone line was being listened to.
At 97 he has gone to his reward.
His prophecy will be gloriously rewarded.

THE IRISH PROBLEM
One gets the impression that sexuality activity among priests is more common in some diocese more than others.
Armagh is in the First League.
As in Meath - and now they are getting Uncle Tom - not Uncle Ted :-)
Plenty of stories from Dublin, Cork, Cloyne, Kerry, and Galway too.
BISHOPS:
Are bishops involved?
I have heard credible stories about three currently serving Irish bishops.
The story is getting bigger and bigger.
Let readers keep us informed.
ARMAGH IS THE ONE TO WATCH THESE DAYS.
Your Holiness,
ReplyDeleteYou present well. I remarked to an old Australian priest visiting Dublin a few years ago that I liked the sounds coming from Rome. He whispered across the table "its too late." In our world I think he is right.
I am aware of a priest in your home diocese won publicly spoke against you shortly after your election. I know by Canon Law, a censure is incurred in doing that....bon homie in public, ruthless in private.
Holy Father, perhaps you should see that he is restored to full ministry if the sound still coming out of Rome are real.
Without wax
Bill Mulvihill
I hope someone will bring your comment to Frank's attention.
DeleteFather Sean Quinn, Togher. He should be immediately be dismissed from ministry. He is protected by the Church. There is a major cover up by The Gardai and The Archdiocese in this case. I am very familiar with a particular case of a devastated life, so is the Archdiocese and An Garda Siochana. It is the usual Irish story of protection of a wider story. Blackrock is my home village.

******This is the BIG scandal in Armagh that Brady and Amy have been hiding.
DeleteWhat is this story?
DeleteIt once frightened me to think that a man could make a promise of obedience to a great bishop like this and then in a few years find him replaced by a man such as Clifford/Martin/Deenihan etc etc.
ReplyDeleteIts sufficient grounds for a "divorce".
DeleteA divorce if first you don't go insane dealing with the replacements.
DeleteIt took a long time but Jim Heaver finally got Justice and is in jail. He was a Marist and school principal in Dundalk. Pity so many of them got away. His sentence is recent. He was protected also for so long....
ReplyDeleteThere is no trace of this Marist Jim Heaver on google. Can you provide a link?
Deleteyes link please if possible. very interested in this if true
DeletePat, can you put names to the pictures of the Armagh clergy in the previous post? I know the guys in the vestments but not sure of the priest with the microphone wearing sunglasses. Also, who is the guy below him in the brown hoodie? Is he a priest?
ReplyDeleteThe sunglasses man is Laurence Boyle.
DeleteThe brown hoodie man Piotr Delimat of St. John's Tralee, Kerry.
King Puck is his fellow curate!
As stated on the Archdiocese of Armagh & Kerry Clergy listing:
DeleteFr. Emlyn McGinn CC Cookstown
Fr. Laurence Boyle PP Cookstown (Sunglasses)
Fr. Garrett Campbell PP Loughgall
Fr. Mark O’Hagan PP Dundalk
Fr. Rory Coyle c/o Amy’s bedroom
Ks. Piotr Delima Polish Chapliancy
Who's the mo in the middle at the table? He's looks fit.
DeleteMcGinn. But he's putting on the beef.
DeleteRaymond Hunthausen was a true, genuine servant of Christ, able to incorporate the teachings of the Church against the light of the gospel. He was a true PROPHET in line with the Old Testament vision and embracing Christ's mind and heart in fullness. This made him a remarkable person. To be prophetic is a calling for all who follow Christ in that we must always confront abuse of power, privilege, authority, corruption, oppression, injustices and all that dehumanises us. While we must courageously name the powers of sin, corruption, hypocrisy and wrongdoing, shouldn't we also be careful about personal judgments we make where we consign "sinners" to the dustbin and feel we must crush them to pieces. I believe we must, as Christians, imitate Christ and if so, do we have the final say on any one person? There is too much speculative hearsay on this blog encouraging vindictive comments. Sometimes guys are using this blog to score points at those who may have wronged them and suggesting behaviours and actions which may be untrue.
ReplyDeleteA wheel is retained by cogs.
DeleteTo get a damaged wheel free you have to remove cogs.
Jesus relates a parable by which a servant is relieved of his debt whereupon this servant goes out and holds his own debtor to account without mercy. The master of this servant is angry that his example was not followed and withdraws his mercy measuring out punishment greater than his initial sentence.
DeleteI left F'bro Abbey believing Cuthbert Brogan was a good man who had made a mistake but because he wanted to stay, as his friend, I should do all I could to assist him. When I returned for a visit 6 years later he introduced me, alone, just the three of us, to a young man he said had been a choir boy in the Abbey's men & boy's choir. I was not comfortable with the meeting and not sure of it's purpose or why it had to be alone and not in the church hall where most others were after mass. It was the I vowed to myself if I ever heard a sniff of a minor being hurt, I would come forward with my story. (I still hadn't fully comprehended how he had hurt me and therefore potentially other young people and adults) Not long after that visit I was contacted by a woman connected with the men & boy's choir looking for some information to take to the bishop (Crispian Hollis?) on Cuthbert that might be used against him, that might help save the choir who Cuthbert (and the community?) were intent on dissmissing. She asked was Cuthbert gay? I said I was and that was why I left but I couldn't speak for Cuthbert. I also said that decisions about the abbey were for the community. I'm sure from what I remember that she was dissapointed. On hanging up I phoned Magnus Wilson, then prior and informed him. He was thankful and some time later Cuthbert called me from Italy. I have little recollection of that, friendliness, gratitude, I think. I made the decision that it was too risky for Cuthbert to have me hanging around and frequently visiting and so I made no further contact till I friended him on facebook some 18 years later! He seemed rather reticent and I was increasingly gobsmacked at this liberal turned arch conservative. None of the community from my time, stories of bullying and the final penny drop of what happened to me.
Cuthbert, it appears, has consigned many to the dustbin. If I had returned to find him penitent, hospitable and the beloved father in Christ to his community, practicing in charity and humility, if he had apologised, I would have been content and lived with it, gladly. Finding as I have, I now demand that he should not gain in either prestige or possession and should live a life of prayer and penance in a foreign house, including house arrest if he should be found to have acted criminally and be convicted (though the law might prescribe otherwise)
I don't believe in crushing someone to pieces either. Christ said it would be better (not that it should happen, rather a person should heed the gravity) if a millstone were tied around the neck of them who caused the little ones to stumble, and they be thrown in the sea! It takes wisdom to know when "Turning The Other Cheek" is an act of sacrifice and when it is an act of passive resistance. You neither help yourself, the perpetrator or the rest of the world by becoming a doormat. Injustice must be made visible!
We only have 4 cheeks.
DeleteSometimes you can run out of cheeks :-)
The Lord said “cheek” - not “cheeks”. So we turn the same cheek all the time and we forgive 77x7 times.

ReplyDeleteBill Mulvihill, ()seething anger and clenched teeth with a good dose of fury.
Justified anger blended with an especially intelligent humour.
DeleteDear Bill, please accept my humble apologies and this expression of abject sorrow over the untrue remarks I have made in your regard and which I, hereby and forthwith, retract in their entirety.
DeleteI express my abject remorse and ask for your forgiveness. Truth be told, since our student days, I was always in awe of you and felt so inadequate next to you. Jealousy is a terrible thing.
On my knees, I crave your indulgence and understanding as, in sackcloth and ashes, I repent and seek to amend my life.

Magna, darling, I am very hurt by you thinking the Count is me. We're quite different people.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling he is much more welcome in Armagh than mummy would ever be. You really must learn to listen to the hints in the conversation - the only thing mummy uses Vaseline for is to stop the dye running when I'm doing my ends.
I've been keeping more quiet because the bishop wanted less of me and mummy doesn't like to intrude - except in her son's life, of course.

DeleteIs somebody playing silly games today :-)
DeleteYes, Indeed. You are being messed about BP Pat
DeletePeople are always playing silly games with you, Pat - nothing new. When it suits you, you play along with those games and act all “innocent”.
DeleteWhat this guy (or guys) is (are) doing, is what others do all the time, when they pretend to be a “parishioner” or “concerned” cleric, etc. and feed you a load of crap which you happily swallow and publish.
So par for the course. We are not fooled. Anyone with a titter of wit can discern the mischief that goes on here under your supervision and “moderation”.
What’s more, you’ve been told again and again about this and you don’t publish/ignore the comments. Nevertheless, people KNOW!
My Friend, I am constantly accused by all minds of people of all kinds of things.
DeleteWhat is YOUR agenda?
Pat, those comments above are fake. There's no way that Emlyn, Garrett & Mark would each contact you. Total pisstake!
ReplyDeleteI am inclined to agree.
DeleteEmlyn Mc Ginn is a lovely guy. I don't believe that he's been up to anything untoward. I don't know Garrett or Laurence so can't comment. The three of them are however, quite easy on the eye, so I could see how they might receive lots of attention from women and men so it's understandable how they might give into any unwanted advances. I am just acknowledging the fact that things easily happen when people are attracted to each other.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Emlyn.
DeleteBit a lot of people and priests are discussing him.
None of them catch my eye personally. But there again we all have our types.
10:42 Emlyn being in a relationship with another priest and removed from seminary for having sex with another man does not change him being a nice person. He is a lovely man but likes c#%k
Deletethat's exactly it you are right, some old troll wants into their knickers... its a case of "If I can have you nobody will" so they publish here lol... find out who they are pat, they have more to hide than the lads pictured...

DeleteThought as much.
I wonder if the gorgeous cockhound appears in the upcoming “The Armagh Saga”.
When will Chapter One be out, Bp Pat?
+Pat, clearly someone is messing with you and this blog and turning it into happy hour. It is some priest, seminarian, or disgruntled old x-seminarian who got a golden toe award from the seminary (deserved) why don't you look up the ip address for yourself and you can find out where they are at least.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteI am convinced that it is a priest with an agenda.
But it's important that my readers see things like this.
Garrett and Mr Swagger never left the Conway Inn when in Cookstown. Running after all the young lads and bringing them back to the parochial house. Father Murray PP use to sleep with ear plugs.
DeleteOne must never foul his own nest dear or mess on your own doorstep. Big mistake! Don't they get taught this valuable lesson in Seminary or Houses of Correction?
DeleteIf half the stuff said here is true, its very worrying- maybe I as a layman am utterly naive. I don't think its fair Pat that some of these priests are being defamed by anonymous account holders. From my limited knowledge of the Diocesan Church I know how vindictive people can be and truly unchristian
ReplyDeleteIts not that you are naive.
DeleteIts that the problem is so big and universal.
There is much worse to come.
Tomas
ReplyDeleteThank you for man-ing up. Thats the end of it. I now have no issue.
If I may pay you a compliment, you never bought into the mediocrity that they medicated us in Maynooth. They did not want anyone to excel, they simply wanted salesmen to sell their product. You excelled in everything, particularly intellectually and you worked and studied hard. The Deans hated you for it, as they hated David O Hanlon for exactly the same reason. When they really punctured you, what did they do ? They made you sell your library.
Pick yourself up Tomas and offer yourself as a lectured on Culture....you would go well.
Thank you Tomas, I wish you well.
Bill ( Mulvihill)
Bill, there may very well be a lot of truth in what you are saying and I have no doubt as to your integrity , sincerity and honesty.
DeleteHowever, you are coming across as a bit unhinged (accusing your former Maynooth classmate); and Buckley kissing your ass isn’t doing your cause any favours either.
You should set up your own blog.
I have never even seen, much less kissed, Bills arse :-)
DeleteBill is an intelligent man. He knows when he is being played and not played.
Give him some credit.
FATHER WILLIAM MULVIHILL
ReplyDeleteDear Bill,
You have propelled this good and courageous blog into a new orbit by being the first sitting Irish PP to speak out and put his name and details to what he is saying. You obviously have as much knowledge as integrity.I hope that very soon you will not be alone and some of the rest of us will follow. The Irish Church in every diocese is a mess. Most of the bishops are fit for nothing. There an unending number of sexual and financial scandals waiting to see the light of day. The laity thought that they had heard the worst. The worst is yet to come. Fellow PP.
Bravo Bill Mulvihill for ending the stand off with TOC and for your very generous words about him, all of which are true.
ReplyDeleteMediocrity and Misery...the motto of Maynooth
ReplyDeleteHail Bill Mulvihill. Salve Guglielmus! Lighthouse of the North.
ReplyDeleteSalve Guglielme.
DeleteFr William Mulvihill you are the Northern Star. You have brought this blog onto a new plain. We are all avid readers now. Good man. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteWell said PP. I agree and, like you, hope this may be the beginning of much needed change. Even an atheist like myself acknowledges the benefits of and need for spiritual and moral guidance and support for very many people in today's materialistic selfish world. The RC institution as at present provides little beyond rites of passage rituals from far too many self serving weak anaemic clergy, especially the hierarchy. Those with the courage to demand change will be supported by all of good will. MMM
ReplyDeleteThe THREE Bishops that have had sexual contact or still are having sexual contact need named and shamed as they are NOT fit for the position they hold and they should resign NOW.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Visit Pope Francis will have if these THREE Bishops get outed or need to resign and it will be accepted as the Church gets cleansed in Ireland as Archbishop Eamon states.
Archbishop Eamon should start with his clergy and Seminarians NOW however I hope he is not another KOB as we see Archbishop taking NO action and everyone in Armagh must wonder why.
Keep up the GOOD work + Pat and help the laity to get rid of these unfit for Office Bishops, Clergy and Seminarians.
What about Friday William's serious comments on a felllow Armagh PE who had been in BlackRock? What is being done about this? It seems to have been greeted by silence.

ReplyDeleteI am now going to direct that if its possible , we shall know who you are and I shall oil your hinges for you...
THE ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN
ReplyDeleteIf the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin insinuates to anyone again that I am not telling the truth, I shall put up on this blog what I know to be true. You would be wise Dermot Martin to practice prudence for none of the other Cardinal Virtues are applicable to you.
Bill son, wind your neck in. You won’t be oiling anyone’s hinges.
DeleteWhat you imagine was said about you by your classmate could be said about you by many many others. Mind yourself.
If you come on to a blog like this and start swinging the lead, as you are doing, you can expect a bit extraction of the michael to happen.
So pull up your big boy pants, lad and don’t take on so.
What you are alleging here is as serious as it gets and, if it’s not true, a bit of slagging on Buckley’s blog will be the very least of your worries.
Why should any man be silenced if he believes a truth needs told?
DeleteOf course if he makes allegations that are found to be not true, there are consequences.
Bill is a wise man. He is also courageous.
We can advise caution, but not silencing.
THE CARDINAL VIRTUES
ReplyDeletePrudence.
Temperance.
Courage.
Justice.
I was once challenged by Cahal Daly's senior counsel, in the witness box of Belfast High Court who accused me of not been prudent.
ReplyDeleteI answered him with the words of the Angelic Doctor:
"Prudence is that virtue by which bold men make right decisions".
Been in seminary with Emlyn, he is a really nice guy. Michael Kelly (Irish Catholic) and Emlyn had a thing but still a nice guy.
ReplyDeleteIf there's any shred of reality to what's being claimed and exclaimed on this cyber reality forum, I pity any would be aspiring seminarians. If true there's a rot at the core. Very very sad, indeed!
ReplyDeleteI am very careful about what is published here.
ReplyDeleteYou don't know the half of it yet!
The more difficult stuff is pulled out slowly and with more caution.
Aul Hunthausen (who mistook being a bishop with being a Democrat Senator) was a cover-up merchant too eg Fr McGreal.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous at 16:06
DeleteWell said I agree with every word. He was also a Heretic! As you can see it's only the "Mad Mods" who extol him.
I shall vouch for Emlyn Mct Ginn. He is a good man, good to people and they love him back. If anyone is out to injure him, let them know that I think he is a really good priest. Caveat.......

DeleteWhat are you trying to imply with that remark? You certainly don't posses any of The Cardinal Virtues. Please say The Rosary, Billy you're sorely in need of it. Eviva Maria!
Bill, the Archbishop of Dublin says there is no substance to the allegations you and other priest's have made about him.
ReplyDeleteHe challenges those hiding behind anonynimity to come out in the open and say the same things.
In you case of course you have put your name to them.
Why is the Archbishop of Armagh not taking action against Bill Mulvihill as going what he writes on this blog he is in breach of his ordination vows to obey the Bishop and again under Canon Law Bill is bringing the church into disrepute.
ReplyDeleteNow he has turned on the Archbishop of Dublin and although he cannot take action on another diocese he could take Bill through the courts.
There is a difference in thinking something but saying it in writing is madness if not True.
So Bill can we have the TRUTH please or have you lost the plot and need help.
In this day and age archbishops or others cannot silence priests and ban them from commenting anywhere.
DeleteBill has an issue with Diarmuid Martin and has challenged him personally which is his right.
I'm sure Bill will be circumspect, but truthful in his public comments.

Lovely response. Two peas in a pod, Bill n Pat.
DeleteRegardless of how Armagh is being handled, the scandles throughout Ireland and the world, you two are not going to solve it.
By your awful talk, it's evident you are not on a spiritual level with Him who you say, lip service, and were ordained to carry on His ministry.
Go check my IP address, I don't care, what I care about is TRUE ministry, not back slapping, vainglory which you both seem to hate but are so much enjoying.
Bishops against bishops, fathers against sons, confusion. Signs of the times to which you are dancing.
How would you two encourage anyone to follow Christ?
DeleteGood grief what is going on? - all the accusations, insinuations and threats - mad stuff on today's blog - hard to keep track - events moving at a fast pace
ReplyDeletePat you mentioned yesterday that Eamon was not the first choice for Armagh and that others had turned it down - can you names those who were offered it and turned it down?
ReplyDeleteThis Bill Mulvihill reminds me of Matthew Despard and look at him in total melt down.
ReplyDeleteIt did not take Bishop Joe Toal long to suspend him but it has taken years to resolve.
So why is Archbishop Eamon Martin not suspending Bill Mulvihill and getting the help he needs.
The Archbishop has a duty of care to both Bill Mulvihill and the parishioners of his parish.
It certainly is a very serious situation indeed. The lack of any response is bewildering. From the accused former PP? From the archbishops? Accusations of the most serious nature have been levelled. One would think that some response would be quickly forthcoming.
DeleteAs the old saying goes and how true it is: Give someone enough rope .......
DeleteThat someone is Bill Mulvihill and Pat is encouraging him to take more rope.
Pat, has Diarmuid Martin actually contacted you about Bill’s allegations?
ReplyDeleteDiarmuid Martin has been personally contacted and asked about these allegations and denied them completely.
DeleteHe has challenged Bill to make them in public and provide his specifics.
I am party to these communications.
ARMAGH HAS SEVERAL SCANDALS IN THE PIPELINE AND ALL WILL BE EXPOSED WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT.
ReplyDeleteIs that you Bill?
ReplyDeleteWishful thinking dreamer @ 22.37. Heard it all before.
ReplyDeleteI have a funny feeling the story will break during the Pope's visit!
